These are the matters that require Specters attention, but, like the rest of the limp-dicked, power-tripping Congressmen who grilled Roger Clemens and Brian McNamee on the same day, he will assign these matters lower priority while wasting our time and betraying our trust with triviality. After all, none of this boring stuff will land him in front of a bank of microphones. http://phillyist.com/2008/02/15/asshole_of_the_5.php Best, David www.davidmarine.com ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 16 Feb 2008 05:35:50 -0800 (PST) From: Bob Muller Subject: Re: njc, We love our freedom Hi Mon, it's always encouraging to me to see that young people are engaging themselves in the process and not falling prey to the mindset your Dad seems to have adopted. I turned 18 back in 1975 and have voted in EVERY Primary and election since, and I would add that your LOCAL elections are just as important, if not more so - city and county councils, governors, etc. will likely effect your day-to-day life than will the (P)resident on Pennsylvania Ave. The other side of the coin is to become informed. This is easier and tougher than it was at one point. Time was, you had debates, newspapers and junk mail to use to discern a candidate's stand - now you have an infinite selection of resources, each with their own agenda & spin. To wade through all of this stuff and retain objectivity can be very tricky. Happy Saturday, JMDLer's! No, no no, Feb. 12). But many of us rejoice at Herbie Hancock's Album of the Year honor. The Joni Mitchell tribute, which includes music by Duke Ellington and Wayne Shorter, is a rewarding collection by an artist who has been groundbreaking and fearless for nearly 50 years. What a pleasure to see sales skyrocket within a day for a musician who avoids the self-aggrandizement and posturing so prevalent on the music landscape. Daly, who seldom mentions jazz except in a patronizing way, worries this award erodes the Grammy's credibility. I suggest that Hancock, Mitchell and the all-star cast on River are perpetually modern, and this surprising choice was a rare and welcome triumph of art over commerce. But Bob was being sarcastic. He knows I like 'My Funny Valentine' about as much as he likes 'Dancin' Clown'. But I have to admit, watching Carly and listening to her lovely voice sing the very pretty, though melancholy melody makes it hard to dislike the song. It almost made me forget the maudlin lyrics about the person who doesn't seem to have much regard for the person they supposedly love. Watching that video makes it hard to believe that Carly has suffered from severe stage fright over the years. She seems like such a natural performer. I love her concert on the dock at Martha's Vineyard and the one she gave in Grand Central Station in NYC. Unfortunately I was very disappointed in 'In To White'. She sounded very tired on that cd. Most of it sounded very flat and passionless. I hope she is in good health. She looked very gaunt in the photos on the cd cover. Mark in Seattle Carly Simon fan ever since 'You're So Vain', a great pop song with one of the greatest hooks ever written. PS: Most of the old-timers here know about my conversion from RLJ skeptic to die-hard fan after seeing her perform live. That being said, I still have trouble with Rickie Lee's version of 'My Funny Valentine'. For me, Rickie's dramatic delivery just accentuates everything I don't like about the song. - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Patti Parlette" To: ; ; ; Sent: Friday, February 15, 2008 6:20 AM Subject: NJC Valentines Day Music Bob mentioned: Rickie Lee Jones' version of (Mark Scott's favorite) My Funny Valentine *** Sorry for being a day late and doily short on this thread. Oh, is that your favorite, CarlyMark? Then this rosebud's for you, dear: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E7z2ED_NyuM If you want more Carly, check the My Romance Concert on that page. (Ha -- she doesn't seem so removed from romance!) Yesterday I was searching for an e-version of Sherelle's You Are My Heart to put up here. That one gets me every time, too. The piano is so captivating and interesting weaved together with Cohen's deep voice.
