The Last Dance- Gino Vannelli A great song, a great cd.<< Wow! i thought i was a huge GV fan but have never heard of this song or cd! Guess i must spend some more $$$ to update my Gino collection. I became a huge GV fan when i purchased Storm At Sunup back in 1975. While SAS remains up there with my all-time favorites, if i had to pick a #1 it would probably be Jehovah & All That Jazz (or else something from that album). Also adore Brother To Brother! But i just must reiterate again how incredibly much I LOVE Shine!!!!!!!!! Joni is the only musician who remains constant in my listening experience. For thirty years now she is the only artist who never gets stale & i play on a daily basis. Yes I relish all of her past work but Joni is the ONLY ONE who keeps me coming back for more & more. I'm not embarassed to say that i am completely addicted to her music. Where i think i depart from most Joniphiles is that i usually prefer her latest albums much more than her early stuff which everyone else is so obviously attached to. I buy all Joni's albums the day they are released & spend the next years absorbing them on a daily basis. She & her awesome band just keep getting better & better! For the past 5 months i just want to hear Shine. When i play her old stuff it sounds as wonderful as ever yet somehow doesn't quite sound as good to me O people are we even beginning to realize what an ongoing GENIUS Joni Mitchell is????? Mindblown by the greatest composer since Beethoven & arguably the greatest artist since Van Gogh & O'Keefe combined ET NPIMH: Bad Dreams Are Good i feel so lucky to be alive in this age of joni ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 9 Feb 2008 20:49:08 +1100 From: Mark-Leon Thorne Subject: Re: Shadows and Light vs. Shadows and Light My favourite S&L is from the Rolling Thunder tour in 1975. It was obviously in its early stages then, possibly written during the tour as was Coyote. It has a warmer, (dare I say) folkie sound to it. Mark in Sydney ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 9 Feb 2008 12:13:37 +0000 From: Michel BYRNE Subject: S & L Has to be the live version with the Persuasions for me, even though some of the singing is way out of tune (the Persuasion with the falsetto is the worst offender). I find it much more reflective than the HSL version, and I love the keyboards - the change to a minor chord at 'Critics of all expression' is a killer! Still like the HSL with its eerie stacked-up vocals, but the synthesiser sound has none of the majesty of the live version (especially that fart at the very end). I'm afraid the Rollling Thunder version left me cold - sounds like same old, same old - we've heard the tuning, we've heard the rhythm - Coyote beats it hands down for me. Joni played it that way on the '76 tour as well. Michael Flaherty - --------------------------------- Never miss a thing. I'm a little biased because while rediscovering Joni, I heard this version before I heard the original version. I have not heard the live version with just her and guitar but I have to agree with Mark that the Persuasions on this with her are the clincher for me! Thanks to the 23 of you who have snagged it since then, and I would remind y'all that the link remains active and ripe for the picking so if you missed it the first time, here 'tis again: http://tinyurl.com/2euood 1. Inis Fail - All I Want: Ah, what a beautiful beautiful beginning to Volume 97. Inis Fail, believe it or not, is an Italian Celtic band - perhaps the only one. In any regard, this cover features some original touches, instruments (penny whistles & such) and arrangements, including the vocal melodies. 2. The Reflections - Both Sides Now: A fun slice of 1971 cheese, with a little bit of that Ventures/Telstar sound. I think these guys played at my prom - you can just see them in their matching jackets, can't you? 3. Brigid Mhairi - Big Yellow Taxi: A nice one, and it comes from her YouTube performance, proving that YouTube is a good way to get yourself heard. Nothing too original here, but fun nonetheless. 4. Anu - Laulud Elatunud Lastele (Songs To Aging Children Come) 5. Anu - Pilved (Both Sides Now) 6. Anu - Hommik, Vaikelinn (Morning Morgantown: These three recordings are about as obscure as they come - for those that don't recall the discussion, these are all in Estonian language, the recordings are a little scratchy, which is OK, and Anu, the female vocalist, is accompanied only by a harpsichord and her own multi-tracked voice. Not something you'll listen to a lot, but at the same time not something you can easily pull away from either. 7. Jeanie Brandes - The Circle Game: Too much vibrato and warble in the voice to suit me - she throws in a couple of Barry Manilow-ish key changes in there if you like those kind of things, corny as Kansas in August to me. 8. The Albion Christmas Band - River: From their 2006 Christmas album, a pretty vocal from Kellie While and playing from Ashley Hutchings, ex-Fairport Convention/Steeleye Span and others. Hits all the right notes musically & emotionally. 9. Fabienne Thibeault - Le Grand Parking (Big Yellow Taxi): Hailing from Quebec, Fabienne turns in another fun take on BYT with this track. She's got a great voice and there's some nice slide guitar to be heard here as well. 10. John Taylor Collegiate - Both Sides Now: Comes from an LP celebrating the 56th Manitoba Music Competition Festival. I'm assuming these guys DIDN'T win. 11. Shane - Urge For Going: Another rarity from the 70's, Shane has that Bobby Goldsboro sound, and this version employs an orchestral backup along with a full band, a bit more dramatic than the starker more stripped-down treatment the song typically receives. Serve it up anyway you like, it's one of my favorite Joni songs. 12. Rachel Fuller - Blue: As has been mentioned, classically-trained Fuller is Pete Townshend's lady-friend. This wonderful Joni cover comes from the "Attic Jam" release of last year, featuring various artists. 13. Stephanie Tucker Little - Big Yellow Taxi: I like the guitar, but there's something about the voice that I can't take as easily. Stephanie is based in the Virginia Beach area, so if you're in that vicinity and like this one, check her out sometime. 14. Grace Notes - River: Acapella from the UK, and quite lovely at that. Some unique harmonies and overall a nice warm flow of the song. 15. Lane Dawson - Both Sides Now: Another countryfied take, this one was the B-side to the 45 of his SMASH hit "Caterpillar Man". Another interesting bit of trivia...the songwriter for BSN is listed as "Mitchell R. Jones", I guess he didn't want people to think he was singing a girly song. 16. Dawn Thomson Quintet - All I Want: Another wonderful full-band version of AIW, with some original arrangements and instrumentations. Dawn's vocal intertwines with the different instruments, mostly sax and guitar, in a slower-paced jazzy setting. 17. Rod McCormack & Mick Albeck - The Circle Game: Took me awhile to track this one down, but it's well worth it. An Australian recording from 1996, this one features a great arrangement with wonderful guitar and fiddle fluorishes, and the vocal is easy and light. Highly enjoyable. 18. Gale Mead - Big Yellow Taxi: From Napa, CA, this solid track is from her 2007 live CD. 19. Glen Campbell & Leslie Uggams - Both Sides Now: Ah, this brings back some memories for those of us that recall the Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour. Glen of course released a studio version of the song, and here he performs it on his show with the lovely Ms. Uggams, another 70's unrequited love of mine. 20. Michael Ball - Blue: This one comes from a DVD Michael released a couple of years ago. A little too over-the-top and dramatic for me, but it is a pretty song, innit? 21. Melanie Joy Hall - A Case Of You: 22. Melanie Joy Hall - River: Melanie turns in a couple of Joni covers from her 2007 release. Her voice is solid and she hits the right musical notes but just doesn't seem to capture the emotional notes of these two Blue classics. 23. Tim Foltz - Both Sides Now: GONG! Or as Ogden Nash says..."When we hear singing from Tim Foltz, the entire audience boltz." This one is last for a reason. Even the little combo playing behind him can't stay together - yikes. OK, there you go Jody, Jimmy, Stewart and whoever else likes to see these. Maybe it's fun reading this after you've had a chance to digest the music a bit first. Whatever, one thing you can be certain of is that the Joni Covers Train will continue to chug along for a long time. Hana (I love the sound, all the wonderful rhythms and wonderfully quirky way that it ends)... of course I love the entire album and it is hard to pick favorites but that's kind of what I have arrived at through more listens than I could possibly count... the second-tier of favorites include: Night of the Iguana, If, This Place, One Week Last Summer... Bad Dreams and Shine and Strong and Wrong kind of come and go... Shine seems kind of long and lyrically unfocused at times... Strong and Wrong seems lyrically very weak to me (although I love the part asking if God is a lucky pawn or a rabbit's foot)... Bad Dreams is musically a good piece of Joni and again the lyric is weak to me.
