I guess it's an issue of 'favorite song' vs. favorite recording. It's sometimes hard to be consistent across the board though, I can vouch for that from my experience with defining covers. If someone puts out any sort of work (music, artwork, stories, poems, etc) to the public it is no longer private domain...hence it can be praised or criticized. I don't think anyone should necessarily be called out because of a bad review, that is, as long as it is well written and researched. Opinions are opinions and if you are willing to put yourself out there, you're going to hear all sorts of things about your work. Now it's only human for the author or artist or whoever submits their work on display to the public to get upset at bad reviews but that's the way it goes. -M Bob.Muller@Fluor.com wrote: < I used to post my reviews to the list, but ever since I got blasted from a not so favorable review of a cover from someone that I didn't know the singer was on the JMDL> Thanks to y'all for keeping me fired up about my write-ups. My problem is that, generally, I prefer silence, because songs (sometimes really obnoxious ones!) so easily get into my head and repeat themselves for days and days without end - I don't need an iPod because I have one built into my brain! But anyway, over the years these are some of the songs that I liked so much that I intentionally listened to them over and over until I knew them almost by heart. There are so many good songs, really, and so many good musicians, so it's hard to hone them down to just a few, but here are 40 of the ones that are in my top 100 favorites: 1. Have You Got It In You - Imogen Heap 2. My Favorite Things - John Coltrane 3. Aspirations - Gentle Giant 4. Icarus - Paul Winter Consort 5. Solisbury Hill - Peter Gabriel 6. Worry About You - Ivy 7. Love At The Five And Dime - Patty Griffith 8. My Father - Judy Collins 9. Catch The Wind - Donovan 10. Excellent Birds - Laurie Anderson 11. The Flat Earth - Thomas Dolby 12. Crazy - Seal 13. Friday I'm In Love - The Cure 14. Everybody Wants To Rule The World - Tears For Fears 15. One Of These Things First - Nick Drake 16. Railway - Dando Shaft 17. Mama - Spice Girls 18. Burn For You - Sting 19. Could I Be Your Girl - Jann Arden 20. Anybody Seen My Baby - Rolling Stones 21. Bo Radley - Bruce Hornsby 22. love is more thicker than forget - Jonatha Brooke 23. We Can Work It Out - The Beatles 24. Classical Gas - Mason Williams 25. 10,000 Miles - Mary Chapin Carpenter 26. Tony - Patty Griffin 27. Winter Wind - Patty Larkin 28. Shadows And Light (and just about all of her songs, really) - Joni Mitchell 29. Every Grain Of Sand - Bob Dylan 30. Honey And The Moon - Joseph Arthur 31. Hammond Song - The Roches 32. Because It's There - Michael Hedges 33. Highwayman - Jimmy Webb 34. Black Coffee - All Saints 35. For Emily Wherever I May Find Her - Simon & Garfunkel 36. Key West Intermezzo (I Saw You First) - John Cougar Mellencamp 37. Piney Wood Hills - Buffy Sainte-Marie 38. All Along The Watchtower (Bob Dylan) - Jimi Hendrix 39. Whiter Shade Of Pale - Procul Harum 40. I was listening to NPR today at work, and they did this bit where some individuals were asked about vocal impressions on various famous people. Joni was one of those famous people, along with Eartha Kitt, Vince Vaughn and someone else. I am paraphrasing some of the remarks here that I heard about Joni to the best of my memory (you know how it is, when you're half-listening and trying to work at the same time): 1. She sounds like lemon meringue pie. 2. She sounds like a (blank) crystal goblet. 3. She sounds like the girl from your childhood who brought you the leftover frosting on the spoon when her mom baked a cake. 4. She makes me feel like I'm being lied to by an 8 yr old. (Yikes!!)
