I want to respond to and thank each of you individually, because each message was so unique and personal to the giver. I can't thank you enough. Merci mille fois! Just give me some time....I have a busy workday ahead (esp. since I took Friday off, as a "seeker of mental health"), and then I having a "meeting" with Barack and Sweet Caroline (yes, I recently read that Neil Diamond wrote that song w/ Caroline Kennedy in mind) this afternoon. And I have a few things to say about Veronique Sanson (merci pour ca, CoT!) and the new President of France who kisses on Main Street... Warning: Politics Ahead I told you when I met you I was a "thoughtful, reflective observer", and that is how I have tried to approach this oh- so-important election. I've had a headful of quandary, and a mighty mighty thirst for justice and honesty ("a thing that's unique and new") and hope for the future and for peace. By attending this event today, I think I'm making my "endorsement." ; ) Put on the day, babies! Love & Peace, Patti P. (Politics again. Sorry!) A JMDL sweetie sent me this message this morning in a condolence call, and it made me so glad that I just have to share it: ***** "I have attempted throughout my life to give a voice to the voiceless, hope to the hopeless, encouragement to the discouraged, and options to the cynical and complacent. My weapons have been a singing voice and a commitment to nonviolence in both word and action. From Northern Ireland to Sarajevo to Latin America, I have sung and marched, engaged in civil disobedience, visited war zones, and broken bread with those who had little bread to break - for all of which I am richer in spirit. The experience dearest to my heart was marching with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. as he led the movement to end racism, bigotry, misuse of power, and poverty. Those were times when sacrifice was an accepted and meaningful concept, before greed had swelled to the proportions it has today. Through all those years, I chose not to engage in party politics. Though I was asked many times to endorse candidates at every level, I was never comfortable doing so. At this time, however, changing that posture feels like the responsible thing to do. I am endorsing a candidate for the office of President of the United States. If anyone can navigate the contaminated waters of Washington, lift up the poor, and appeal to the rich to share their wealth, it is Barack Obama. If anyone can bring light to the darkened corners of this nation and restore our positive influence in world affairs, it is Barack Obama. If anyone can begin the process of healing and bring unity to a country that has been divided for too long, it is Barack Obama. It is time to begin a new journey." *** Yeah! Shine on Barack! The transmission of the song over NASA's Deep Space Network will mark the 40th anniversary of the day the band recorded the song. The song will be aimed at the North Star, Polaris, 431 light years away from Earth, and it will travel across the universe at a speed of 186,000 miles per second, NASA said. In a message to the space agency, Sir Paul McCartney said: "Amazing! Well done, NASA! Send my love to the aliens. All the best, Paul". Yoko Ono added: "I see this as the beginning of the new age in which we will communicate with billions of planets across the universe." Fans have been invited to participate in the event by playing the song around the world at midnight GMT on Monday night - the same time it will be transmitted by NASA. The event will also mark 50 years of NASA, 45 years of the Deep Space Network and 50 years since the founding of Explorer 1, the first US satellite. A NASA spokesman said many of the senior scientists and engineers involved in the project were among The Beatles' biggest fans. Dr Barry Geldzahler, the network's programme executive at Nasa Headquarters in Washington, said: "I've been a Beatles fan for 45 years - as long as the Deep Space Network has been around. What a joy, especially considering that Across the Universe is my personal favourite Beatles song." John Lennon on 'Across The Universe' (1980): The words stand, luckily, by themselves. They were purely inspirational and were given to me as boom! I don't own it, you know; it came through like that. I don't know where it came from, what meter it's in, and I've sat down and looked at it and said, "Can I write another one with this meter?" It's so interesting: (sings) "Words are flying out like endless rain into a paper cup, they slither while they pass, they slip across the universe." Such an extraordinary meter... and I can never repeat it! It's not a matter of craftsmanship; it wrote itself. It drove me out of bed. I didn't want to write it, I was just slightly irritable and I went downstairs and I couldn't get to sleep until I put it on paper, and then I went to sleep. Jerry PS Classics, the label dedicated to the heritage of American popular song, will record Maureen McGovern's newest concert act, A Long and Winding Road. As previously announced, McGovern will present Winding Road for New York audiences Feb. 13-16 and Feb. 21-23 at the Metropolitan Room. McGovern will head into the recording studio over the Feb. 1 weekend and will continue laying down tracks for the next two weeks. Tommy Krasker, the co-founder of PS Classics, expects a spring release for the single CD. A Long and Winding Road features an eclectic mix of tunes from such celebrated sixties singer-songwriters as Joni Mitchell, Jimmy Webb, Paul Simon, Carole King, James Taylor, Randy Newman, Bob Dylan, John Lennon, Paul McCartney and Laura Nyro. Song titles include "The Circle Game," "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow?," "The Moon's a Harsh Mistress" and "Imagine," among others. In a statement Krasker said, "We committed to recording A Long and Winding Road after seeing a half-hour rehearsal in December. The mating of performer and material is so perfect, and Maureen's approach to the songs is so compelling and powerful - we knew it had to be preserved on disc. Jeff Harris, Maureen's longtime music director, will be enlarging the instrumental forces slightly for the studio, but the repertoire will pretty much mirror the show that Maureen is performing at the Metropolitan Room." About her new show, McGovern recently stated, "For the longest time, people have been asking me to do a concert featuring so-called 'Baby Boomer' songs. At this time in my life, looking back, what interested me most were those introspective songs that influenced and inspired my own development as a person and an artist before 'The Morning After.' I started out as a folk singer in the late '60s, so it was highly nostalgic for me to go back and explore this particular section of my musical influences. I fell in love all over again with the early works of Jimmy Webb, Carole King, Bob Dylan, Randy Newman and other groundbreaking singer-songwriters from my youth. Their songs, as The New York Times has called them, have become 'the second half of the Great American Songbook.' They're classic, timeless and evoke all kinds of memories." ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 4 Feb 2008 08:55:22 -0800 (PST) From: Smurf Subject: Re: njc, Across the Universe tonight / better choices?
