I escaped to my little cottage on lake Erie last weekend for a few sane days and was snow bound for a whole week. THANK U G-D!!!!!!! Every night I blasted SHINE on the awesome stereo that is there. Not since Turbulent Indigo have I loved a Joni album this much! After perhaps 200 listens to SHINE and being a huge Joni fan since BLUE was released I must restate emphatically that SHINE is the best album she has yet composed. I can't listen to any of her privious albums for more than a few songs without craving to hear SHINE again. This Place particularly hooks me. Somewhat taken aback and surely thinking I was bonkers she replied 'no.' I told her of the tune and how groovy it was. She was more taken aback by the word used by me all too often I suppose. lol. We then attended to business. As with all those types she asked me, upon conclusion, if she had taken care of all my needs and concerns sufficiently, paraphrasing, today. I told her she had done well but asked her if she remembered what I had told her when we first spoke. She said, giggly now, 'I do but what was the name again?' 'Joni Milstead?' Aghast but not showing it, on the phone, I corrected her and had her write it down and again told her how wonderful the tune was and although she had not heard it, she told me so, her boyfriend should be aware of it. She laughed and said 'he's not." She promised to find it and give it a listen. It was the first one I looked at but was a great deal so I jumped on it. Interestingly, 5 of the other ads I responded to on Craigslist (where I found this car) were all scams. You inquire about the car then you get an email explaining how the car is actually in another state but that you can send them the money through such and such service and such and such will deliver the car to you and of course you get a "full refund" if you are unsatisfied, blah blah blah...yeah right. Like I'm really going to send several thousand dollars to someone I've never met for a car I've never seen. Anyhow, there are legitimate people trying to sell things if you're willing to weed through the garbage. I was initially trying to find another Toyota or Honda but decided to go with this car, a '99 Ford Taurus as it's in really good shape, has nice comfortable leather seats, and the stereo sounds awesome. I think I will actually like it more than the car I was driving so I suppose I should thank the person who caused the accident. Although it has been a big hassle and created much undue stress and worry. But I've been able to wrap things up in a relatively short time so that's a good thing. I must confess that I haven't been listening to Shine repeatedly. I think it is a beautiful work and I find that it grows more profound and beautiful everytime I do hear it. When hearing the lyrics in the context of the music, I am finding them more and more in keeping with Joni's usual standard of well-crafted, meaningful writing. But I have to say I can't listen to Shine very often. It's interesting that you mention Turbulent Indigo, Eric, because I find that the way I felt about that record is pretty much the way I feel about Shine. Brilliant, unique, the master at work in her prime - but far too dark in too many places for me to take in large doses. Some of this is due to the timing of these records. TI came at a very dark time of my life and Shine at a time when I have been feeling very fragile, even though I *know* that I am not. I am just terribly unsure of myself at times. But enough of that. This reminds me of another comment I was going to make in the thread about Joni and her relationship with other female performers in the early days of her fame. Grace Slick wrote in her book 'Somebody to Love?' that she would not turn the full force of her sometimes agressive, out-there personality (particularly agressive and out-there when fueled by alcohol and other substances) on Joni in those days because Grace perceived Joni as being very fragile. Grace goes on to say that she found out later she was wrong about Joni, that Joni was and is a strong person. She also said she had seen Joni somewhere in more recent times but didn't have the guts to go up and speak to somebody who had worked with Charles Mingus! It's the amazing performance which "Blue" and "A Case of You" are taken from on the DVD documentary about her ("Woman of Heart and Mind"). I've seen a couple of other music documentaries recently, and they've both used clips from the same concert - so it must be available somewhere, but I've no idea which concert it is. I suspect it's mid-70s, but other than that I don't know. Was wondering if you could help. Any info would be really gratefully received!
