NJC Happy to oblige, Vince - it was a great night last night watching all the coverage. Mrs. SCJoniguy and I both got out and cast our votes for Obama. How nice to be able to go and vote FOR someone you can truly believe in as opposed to voting against the other party, and proving to the Super Tuesday states that Barack IS electable. Both of us have met him and can testify that his charisma is for real. What's more significant is that the Democratic Primary drew around 86,000 more voters than the Republican Primary last week - that's huge. Obama has engaged many people who have been apathetic about the process, and has pulled many crossover Republicans as well. I know that from talk in the locker room and people like my Mother-in law, all of who are staunch Republicans but are smart enough to see that their selections this year are not that strong. Of course, should Hillary get the nomination, that might just be enough to galvanize the Republicans and give them incentive to get out the anti-Clinton vote. Made me wonder if I'm suddenly on Joni-only :-) I can't wait to read the artice in Mojo. And I have yet to really get into Shine. More a question of time than taste, but (sounding more critical than I mean to) I still prefer Joni's Hejira-era voice to the way her voice sounds now. And, as has been said here previously, I find the lyrics a tad disappointing. But I'll give it more of a listen, possibly this weekend... If so, thanks for the early capsule of capsule review. Dusty's voice is like home cookin' in its cozy mix of warmth and soul -- a difficult thing to pull off actually. I like Shelby alright but I may be referring only to her debut album -- I Am Shelby Lynne -- when I say that. The other albums she did after that were dense with orchestrations that made me think that even those unique vocal personalities can get overwhelmed by producers, arrangers, orchestrators. I like the stripped-down music arrangement in general but not slavish to that credo. Joseph, I hear what you're saying, I recommend getting her "Identity Crisis" CD -she went through a creative transformation on that record-presenting herself as a first class songwriter, with very simple production. I first heard her songs when I was at Universite Laval in Quebec City in 1974-75. She is huge in the French-speaking world, but pretty much unknown in the US and English Canada. I knew that Veronique had been married to Stephen Stills and that she lived with him in the US for a number of years until she left him to return to France. They have a son, Christopher Stills, who is also a musician. I'm currently reading a biography of hers called "La douceur du danger" (which translates as something like "The sweetness of danger.") It seems that Madelle Sanson is often drawn to the dangerous side of life, including bad boys such as Stephen Stills. The book was published in 2005 and is written interview style, with Varrod asking Sanson questions, to which she responds very openly. I had always wondered whether Sanson and Mitchell had ever met one another. I'm about half-way through reading this book and was gobsmacked to discover that yes, indeed, they did meet and they seemed to hit it off very well. Veronique Sanson was in a relationship with French singer/songwriter Michel Belanger, when she met Stephen Stills in Paris. Although she had heard of his reputation as a womanizer, drinker and druggie, she fell in love with him immediately despite herself, so much so, that she left Berger for Stills and ended up marrying him. Part of her realized she might be making a mistake, but she didn't want to let down her parents or his, and told her sister just before marrying Stills in England, that she could always divorce him later. (Does that remind you of anyone?) In fact, a few years later, she suddenly left Stills and fled back to France. Here is my translation of that excerpt from the book: Didier Varrod: You also met Joni Mitchell during that time. People often say she's the American Sanson. She also sang with Crosby, Stills and Nash. Veronique Sanson: I know. I met Joni Mitchell in Los Angeles where we often used to go. At that time, I was living in Colorado, where we had am amazing studio, Caribou Studio, which was underneath our home. Joni and I met each other in LA and we liked each other right away. Steve told me that music would unite us. He was not mistaken. I played piano for her and she did the same for me. In the end, we really became friends. We took turns singing our songs. She would call and tell me, "I've got a song. Would you like to come to hear it at my place?" And vice versa. We liked each other a lot. Strangely enough, she reminds me of [the French singer} Barbara, because, just like Barbara, Joni never had much sense of time. Alone at the piano, that worked out fine, but, with other musicians, they were obliged to follow her. She was a wonderful girl. But we never saw each other much after that, except maybe once or twice, about ten years after that. I know that some possibly well-intentioned people went to see her, asking, "Do you know Veronique Sanson?" and she answered right away, "What? Of course, Vero - very well!" But in the US, people see each other, rub elbows, touch each others' lives and then, from one day to the next, it's all over - "Bye, bye love!" That explains that sort of thing and their inability to have any kind of history because they don't really take care of their interpersonal relationships. But, as far as Joni Mitchell is concerned, it's a relationship that corresponds directly to that particular time. She was a girl with extremely good taste. For example, where people live tells you a great deal about them. Her home was very beautiful. There wasn't one thing that wasn't in good taste. I remember her carpets, the rugs that she had had made and her magnificent piano where we used to get together. One day, when Steve was touring with Ben, Joni Mitchell's man at that time, we both stayed at her place because I even lived with her for a while. One night, she got out a bottle of mezcal, which had an enormous white worm in it. I had never seen such a thing before. I said, "What is that horrible thing?" She answered, "You'll see - it's absolutely incredible." We sat down at the piano and all through the night we drank that bottle of mezcal. We woke up underneath the piano in a horrible state, with a terrible headache. Without remembering one thing we had played. In short, we were accomplices. And, it's true, she was also very close to Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. Because she also had a huge talent at drawing, she even designed an amazing album cover for them. She painted, she sculpted, she could do every kind of art. She was a true artist, right to her finger tips. - ----------------------------------------------------- That's the end of that but, if there are any other Joni mentions in the book, I will certainly share with you. I usually vote the same way they do. Every so often they let someone through that I wouldn't have. I used to turn my nose up that those kinds of shows and a lot of the vocal styles that these people use ain't my cup of tea at all (too many imitating other people, badly). But I think it's interesting to see the beginning parts of it when they decide who should and shouldn't go to Hollywood. Then it's interesting to see how some of the singers develop, whereas others stay the same. However, I find that, the closer they get to deciding who *the* idol will be, the less interested I am. In so many ways, those shows are a complete crock, but they can be fun if you're in the mood for that kind of thing. You know, Randy, I didn't clarify what I really meant by using the words, 'balanced panel' and came off as 'politically incorrect.' What I really felt inside of me at that moment was that the panel was pleasant and peaceful with no fussin' and fightin' and put me at ease...it was because of Herbie's presence there, I know, and that familiar sense of comfort I had felt before when I saw him perform. A few years back, I was so lucky, because I wished it so, to get a front row seat smack dab in the middle of the stage to feel, hear and see Herbie and Wayne Shorter without anyone interfering with Wayne, Herbie and me and how I wished it was us three all alone in a lonely box of paints, listening to them play, wearing their wings, taking me away to those secret places. So, that little familiarity I've had with Herbie in person was the same soft and strong feeling I got from him looking out over my TV set to soothe me once again. Sometimes, I just can't take the conservatives during these troubling times on the Bill Maher Show and I just have to turn it off.
