Although she didn't remember me the second or third times, (nor did I expect to or ask her to try) She was always extremely friendly, kind and genuine. The first time I DID come off as an idiot. My heart was racing out of my body and I could barely put two words together. She could see how nervous I was so she just stood up from her chair and gave me a big hug to calm me down. It doesn't get any better than that. Phyliss Hmm, well I sometimes think about if I were to meet Joni what I would say. I actually have a 4 point speech memorized in my head that I would tell her. My biggest fear in actually meeting her wouldn't be that she wouldn't live up to my expectations but that I would come off as an idiot or she'd think I was with probably my ongoing rambling. I would bet that if you did meet her in a nice, proper way (at a gallery, after a concert, vs. barging in on her eating dinner with friends or doing something private or whatever) she would be very kind. That's just my guess though. - -Monika Peep Richman wrote: Hi Joni-People, I now have similar fears as to what might happen if I ever met Joni. I am sure Joni has a public and private persona. Back in the Winter of 1971-'72, when this album was released, I lived and worked at the Snowbird Ski Resort near Salt Lake City, Utah. That album was our favorite for the period, and the title song had great cosmic import for us, but I'll be damned if I can recall what it might have meant. My skiing buddies and I would go night skiing in the full moon nights when possible (meaning: no blizzard) by hiking up the slopes of Alta Ski Resort next door to Snowbird and skiing down in the moonlight. We'd partake of the sacred herbs and Vitamin L for the trip and spend lots of time gazing in Judgement of the Moon and Stars. We'd pack up beer, food, flashlights and Moonlighter Frisbees, the former to light up the latter and play moonlighter frisbee in the basin at the bottom of the Main Street run. While skiing down we noticed that a great number of sparks would shoot out from under our skis, primarily from under the boot area of the ski, producing "The Low Spark of High-heeled Boys." Thus, these all-night ventures became known as "Doing the 'Low Spark of High- heeled Boys'". That is also the time from whence I earned the title "The Bonneville" or "Bonneville Bruce", from the verb, to Bonneville, which is a particularly fast and wreck-less style of skiing not unlike the attempts at the automotive world land speed records some 75 to the west on the Bonneville Salt Flats. Don't say you weren't warned. John's family, I believe, consisted of hundreds of musicians, songwriters and fans spanning the last 45 years who took inspiration from his bountiful and exquisite musical opus. This is a great loss to contemporary music, because John still had so much to offer. I was amongst those who took inspiration from the Kingston Trio back in 1962 when we formed our own folk trio (The Great Folk Scare of the Sixties). We played John's songs; sometimes not even knowing they were his. I left folk music behind after the Feb. 1964 Sullivan shows with the Beatles, along with thousands of other kids. But I picked back up on John around 1970 when I found a cutout copy of "SIGNALS THROUGH THE GLASS" in a Salt Lake record store. I was hooked again on his strong voice and sagacious and determined lyrics. "Mr. Lincoln's Train" was one scary song, sung with wife-to-be, Buffy Ford. Stewart signed the album cover 7/24/95 at the Blues Bouquet Bar, in Boise, after a great concert. (I almost got into a bar-fight at that show with three young gentlemen who insisted upon talking and making noise during the first part of Johns show. I politely asked them to let us enjoy the great music in front of us, and they politely declined, and decided to leave instead.) I stuck with John since "California Bloodlines," and his music has never failed to move me, often to tears. I cant listen to Mother Country from that 1969 Americana foundation album, without crying. John (w)rung the truth out of every word and image on that album, and with it set the song-writing bar so high that few have reached this kind of artistic wholeness and vision since. And it seemed effortless for him, like Seattle Slew widening the gap in the last quarter mile at the Kentucky Derby as he crossed the finish line. I have collected the majority of his albums, each of which have some world-class songs, and all of them are as soulful and true as anything ever written and sung. Mr. Stewart was a world-class triple threat, well endowed with a strong voice, a steady hand on the guitar and a composer of songs that etched images on the listeners that would last a lifetime. His artistic vision was similar to that of Willa Cather, where each in their own way built a literary framework around the vision, nerve, sinew and faith that is the unique character of those who founded this great land and country. Stewart wrote in Mother Country; about the good old days when a century was born and a century had died. There was just a lot of people who were doin the best they could, They did it pretty up and walkin good. This is a theme that both Stewart and Cather would revisit time and again in an effort to embody the values that made this once a great nation. Stewarts love of this country was a common thread throughout his song-writing career; he loved the spirit of America, the deep roots sunk by those who built it stone by post by syllable. John was also one to question the madness of those who lost sight of the greatness and tarnished it with greed and the lust for power. It offended his well-oriented sense of what was right, and he would speak of it in a way that brought some light to the issues. He was truly concerned that we as a people find the right way to steward this land on our watch. He was a dirt patriot who cherished the land and the magic in it. Many who shared his vision of a people worthy of this land will miss John Stewart. He, too, did it pretty up and walkin good. Let the big Horse Run. A few of us crazies use to do the same thing around the same time here in the Sierras. Full moon night, Alpine Meadows, Boreal, and Sugar-----boot pak up the hill till we got kicked off by security. I still try to ski as much as I can, as long as my knees hold out. Back in the early 70's Alta and Snowbird lift tickets were only $5 or $15, can't remember for sure------but I thought Alta and it's bowls were simply stupendous. There was a run on Snowbird that I had to jump off the cornice to start my line. Great confidence builder and totally psyche job. Do you still ski and where? thanks for the memories, gene - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Bruce Eggleston" To: Sent: Wednesday, January 23, 2008 9:30 PM Subject: re: The Merm -> "The Low Spark of High-heeled Boys" (NJC) > The following is a totally stupid, but fascinating, tale connecting > to "The Low Spark of High-heeled Boys." > > Back in the Winter of 1971-'72, when this album was released, I lived > and worked at the Snowbird Ski Resort near Salt Lake City, Utah.
