Not ONE but TWO new albums to tell you about this time and some Stop Press news about the March North American tour. Still some news to come about some new features on the website, but that may not be till February now owing to other pressures. DICK ==== Contents - -------- * Cousins US tour - Cutler joins for first 8 dates * Dave Cousins: Secret Paths * Best Of Strawbs (Zounds) ================================================ COUSINS US TOUR - CUTLER JOINS FOR FIRST 8 DATES ================================================ News just in that fiddle player Ian Cutler will be joining Dave Cousins for the first part of Dave's "solo" tour. I understand he'll be with Dave for the first 8 shows only, having to return to the UK for other commitments after that. We've already been delighted by Ian's fantastic fiddle playing over here in the UK, both as part of the Blue Angel Orchestra, and at the one-off Cousins, Cronk & Cutler gig back in November. We'll no doubt get the chance to preview what those US shows will be like at the one-off Cousins & Cuter folk club gig in Gravesend on 25 Jan. Watch this space. =========================== DAVE COUSINS: SECRET PATHS =========================== At the beginning of the year, Dave went into the studio with steel guitar player Melvin Duffy to record a CD which will be sold on the forthcoming US tour. But don't worry - it will be available through record shops and also from www.witchwoodrecords.co.uk as well. In fact those who buy from www.witchwoodrecords.co.uk will get a bonus MP3 track fere of charge - "The Broken Hearted Bride", which Dave recorded on dulcimer for the Secret Paths album, but which will actually be used for the forthcoming Strawbs album instead. Secret Paths focuses on the songs that Dave will be singing on the solo shows. Songs include "Ringing Down The Years", written by Dave on the news of former band member Sandy Denny's tragic death; "Canada" has the endorsement of Gordon Lightfoot; "I'll Show You Where To Sleep" using a tuning shown to Dave by Joni Mitchell; while the new "Plainsong' is as atmospheric as any songs he has ever written. The secret weapon of Secret Paths is steel guitarist Melvin Duffy - Melvin has spent three years on the road with Robbie Williams and has recorded with Joe Cocker and Zucchero among many others. The album is produced by Chris Tsangarides whose studio is littered with gold discs for albums by Yngwie Malmsteen, Judas Priest, and Thin Lizzy, and who stars in the new film Anvil b The Movie. Track listing for Secret Paths is: Song Of A Sad Little Girl Plainsong The Shepherd's Song I Turned My Face Into The Wind Ringing Down The Years Josephine (For Better Or For Worse) Canada How I Need You Now I'll Show You Where To Sleep Beat The Retreat Falling In Love Again Release date is 3rd March 2008. Preview review to follow shortly on Strawbsweb. Two tracks from Secret Paths - "Song Of A Sad Little Girl" and "I'll Show You Where To Sleep" - are on Dave's MySpace site along with selections from Boy In The Sailor Suit and Cousins & Conrad's album High Seas. http://www.myspace.com/davecousinsuk ======================== BEST OF STRAWBS (Zounds) ======================== German label Zounds have licensed a selection of tracks for a new compilation album, mainly from Witchwood Media, but "Part Of The Union" is also on there too. Did anyone come across the music magazine (I think a British one) from I believe last month which featured Stephen Stills talking about fellow musicians? They had a name listed, such as David Crosby or George Harrison with a sentence to a paragraph or two about Stills' thoughts on the person. It was actually quite interesting to read. I was hoping the name "Joni Mitchell" would be featured but unfortunately it was not though Stephen Stills has said many things about her before but it would have been nice to get an updated opinion. There were many different musicians that Stills was asked about. Most interestingly, was his opinion of Jimi Hendrix which I already knew was very high. He went on and on about Hendrix and his musical ability (and how he learned how to play guitar from him...and Neil Young for that matter). His biggest burn was to Crosby who has been with him musically and in his life quite a while. He basically had only a sentence or two saying he has good and bad memories of Crosby and what more could he say or something like that. He had only kind things to say about Graham Nash calling him the brains of CSN. As for Neil, he called him his "brother" and went on and on about their musical relationship (how he learned guitar from Neil and Hendrix), their strained friendship, and why they do fight so much. It was very interesting to read but I was really hoping for Joni to be mentioned. Ah well. -Monika - --------------------------------- Be a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all with Yahoo! It was an extraordinary performance in a brilliant and insightful movie. Suze can verify how I felt since the first time I saw it she was with me. This morning when the Oscars were announced I reflected how I stopped watching those when they denied Heath the award and gave to to an impersonation that wasn't even th best impersonation of that character in recent film - and the denial of the award to the movie. I felt something so equisite and so beautifully crafted was being denied because of homophobia or the refusal to acknowledge the truth of the story and the performance. And now Heath Ledger is gone. And now there is media hysteria about how he died. And it all misses the point - he gave us something that we had never seen before, a character so incredibly true to the story and reaching for a truth never before acknowledged. "The idea of art making profit, and the idea of making art in order that it make profit and not making art if it looks like it's not going to make profit is anathema to me," she says. "It feels really like the wrong conversation to be having. And the really crucial people in the chain are the distributors because they are the ones who get the films out there, for people to see and for people to build up their taste and for people to want more of that kind of film. And they do have to have a kind of kamikaze spirit; they have to have a kind of gambler's spirit - they have to be prepared to lose. "And the idea of the opening weekend being the criterion for little films that may have nobody you've ever seen in before, maybe by a filmmaker you've never heard of whose name you can't pronounce, maybe in a language you've never heard of - the idea of projecting the pressure of having a fantastic opening weekend onto a film like that is just death to the cinema and death for the audience, because it means then that they're only left with the most straightforward, roadside cafe menu of product." Not that I am a regular poster myself (hoping to defend and write the dissertation this semester) but you very rarely write. Welcome back. I like Heath Ledger too in most of his films. I like that fun moment in "10 Things I Hate About You" when he burst out that "I loooove you, baby and if its quite alright I need you baby...". K have not heard of him before but I thought he was lovable in an off-kilter way. I don't know if I have seen all his films, but I certainly remember "Brokeback Mountain" and his Brando-esque mumblings and was probably rooting for him to win although right now I don't even remember who won that year (Jamie Foxx for "Ray" or was it Philip Seymour Hoffmann in "Capote"?). Then of course he was affecting in "I'm Not There" as an actor whose link to Dylan may have been the later's mid-1960s hipsterism. His on-screen chemistry with Charlotte Gainsbourg is magnetic and mesmerizing. But that's just me -- I love Gainsbourg (both Serge and Charlotte, and oh hell, even Jane Birkin). But yeah, Ledger will be missed. I also read the Oscar nominations this morning. Happy for honoring Cate Blanchett, Tom Wilkinson, Julie Christie, Eastern Promises, Tilda Swinton, Persepolis, etc with nominations. But with the writers' strike, it would be great to see a scaled-down ceremony and see if stars sans teleprompter would be able to fake their way via millions of viewers. I saw a great deal of films but thought Persepolis, I'm Not There, No End in Sight and The Savages are outstanding and a bit surprised at the accolades at other films (Juno, There Will Be Blood, etc.), but then ultimately who cares? Joseph, Chapel Hill np: Old Time Relijun - Garden of Pomegranates Vince Lavieri a icrit : Actually Joseph, one of the reasons that I stopped posting here was I was tired of people (not you) ripping into his performance and/or ripping into the movie Brokeback Mountain. Rest eternal grant Heath O God and let light perpetual shine upon him. Vince On Jan 22, 2008 6:04 PM, Joseph Palis wrote: Sad to see young actors die. - --------------------------------- Yahoo! That will be interesting. Anyway, I'm still rooting for Hillary Clinton. I agree the most with her views, think she's very intelligent, has her head on straight, and would lead the country right (or so I think/hope). I thought Bill Clinton was a very good President although that doesn't determine Hillary's status as President as they are two different people but still. I haven't heard of it yet but like you I love and respect Ms. Swinton and her film choices. I like the kamikaze metaphor. It's akin to blitzkrieg in its all-out fierceness and intensity. Tilda is very androgynous, yes? The first film I saw her in was in Sally Potter's Orlando where she seamlessly shifted from a he to a she against the backdrop of England's ever-shifting cultural landscapes. When I was in Manila I would scour all video rental places so I can watch her early films with Derek Jarman and I am constantly amazed at her expressive impassivity (okay an oxymoron, but if such a concept exists in the thespian world, then Tilda is first among equals). Then she was dynamite in "The Deep End" and the sexual tension between her and Goran Vijnic (sp?) is like this conflagration waiting to happen. She got cited by some critics for her performance in that film. And even if the film is smallish in scale, Tilda shines or at least manages to shine. Remember her in "Thumbsucker" or as one of Bill Murray's flames in "Broken Flowers". That single scene she's in towards the end was most fun to watch. And like her double-entendre in "The Chronicles of Narnia" when she offered Turkish Delight to the kid. Despite those great to excellent performances, I thought she is sublime in "Young Adam" nd "The War Zone". heard she is in talks to play Nico. That would be something to look forward to. Okay, I'll shut up now. Joseph en Carolina Norte np: The Avett Bros. - Love Like the Movies Lindsay Moon a icrit : In an NPR interview, actress Tilda Swinton (one of my favorites since "The Deep End") said this about making movies which I think is parallel to Joni's and many others' views on today's music scene: Swinton has said she would like to see movie distributors take on a "kamikaze vision." "The idea of art making profit, and the idea of making art in order that it make profit and not making art if it looks like it's not going to make profit is anathema to me," she says. "And the idea of the opening weekend being the criterion for little films that may have nobody you've ever seen in before, maybe by a filmmaker you've never heard of whose name you can't pronounce, maybe in a language you've never heard of - the idea of projecting the pressure of having a fantastic opening weekend onto a film like that is just death to the cinema and death for the audience, because it means then that they're only left with the most straightforward, roadside cafe menu of product." They had a name listed, such as David Crosby or George Harrison with a sentence to a paragraph or two about Stills' thoughts on the person. Ah well. -Monika - --------------------------------- Looking for last minute shopping deals? There is a lot more to it than Joni's comments on Joan Baez and Janis Joplin. Some of it is very interesting. Maybe I will address some of it in another post. But since Joni's opinions about some of the other female artists of her time have been the subject of several posts, I have had some thoughts churning around my brain on the subject. Actually these thoughts have been churning around for a long time. In another interview from several years back (it could be 10 or 20 years for all I can remember - as Sandy Denny wrote 'who knows where the time goes?'), I remember Joni saying that whenever she was playing a festival or gig where Joan Baez was also on the bill, Ms. Baez always managed to see to it that at least one of Joni's songs got cut from her set. I also remember Joni saying that Judy Collins was once supposed to give her a ride to a particular event that they both were performing at and Judy never showed to pick Joni up! I was a bit surprised at her comment about having problems with Laura Nyro since Joni has always expressed admiration for Laura. I was also surprised to read that Janis Joplin even thought much about Joni as a rival. Of course, from everything I've read about Janis, she was a very insecure, troubled person. But the two had such different styles as performers that I can't imagine that Janis would have felt threatened by Joni. I sometimes think it is a mistake to always take Joni completely literally. The Mojo article quotes Joni as saying Rolling Stone made Joni queen of rock & roll and Janis hated her after that. Not sure what she meant by that exactly. I can maybe see Rolling Stone giving Joni that title in the Court & Spark era but that was several years after Janis died. Whatever Joni's music was in Janis's time, it doesn't seem like rock and roll to me. But then I suppose it depends on how you define rock and roll. My feeling is that Joni probably inspired some resentment and envy among the women who were already established performers when she first hit the scene. I mean, here was this young, relatively unknown woman with a pristine 3 octave voice, perfect pitch, accomplished, unique guitar playing who was also a highly prolific writer/composer of songs that were of a calibre that none of those other women could hope to approach. And then there was the fact that she had long, beautiful blonde hair, amazing cheekbones, deepset blue eyes and the men (fellow musicians and fans alike) were all smitten with her. (Stills was maybe the exception and Judy Blue Eyes was no slouch in the looks department either.) She also projected a personality that was quite captivating and endearing - or could, I imagine, be very annoying, depending on your point of view. I can see how she might have brought out the worst in some of her fellow female performers. I would imagine the field was much more wide open for men then and that it continues to be that way. I'm sure the women had to fight much harder for recognition and just for work and they probably still do. Others have mentioned David Hajdu's book 'Positively 4th Street'. That book gives a portrait of Joan Baez as a very competitive, ambitious person at the beginning of her career. Hajdu describes one incident when Joan was appearing at one of Boston's coffee houses on the same bill as another singer that she had often practiced with. Joan appeared first and performed just about every song in this other woman's set list, causing the other singer to leave the venue without having even performed. Hajdu also says that Joan would sit in the audience at some of these coffee houses when she wasn't on the bill and sing along with whoever was performing on stage. She would sing loud enough and persistently enough that the performer would feel compelled to invite her up on stage. That being said, I think Baez more than likely has probably grown up considerably since those days and I do admire her for both her talent and her commitment to the betterment of the human condition. And although I have never met Joni myself, many people on the JMDL have. Every story I can remember reading here about meeting Joni has been positive. My understanding is that Joni has been gracious and even affectionate with many JMDLers who have had the good fortune to meet her. Shutting up for now.
