It's 4:30 and I just finished my (thank you espresso) cleaning spree..Listening to Joni the whole way through I got to thinking.. I really missed out...I am now watching the Refuge of the Roads DVD..Watching Joni play For Free on the piano and wishing with all hope that I will one day get to witness Joni playing piano live.(I am not holding my breathe) I was lucky enough to see Joni live only once...The Both Sides Now tour..It was wonderful and romantic and inspiring..But it wasn't a concert full of Joni and her songs...I was happy with what I got, but I have always wondered what it would have been like to go to the Refuge Tour..or better yet the "fabulous wavy hair pink dress with hybiscus' tour"..;) god she looks amazing in that footage...I was just becoming obsessed with joni around the time of the back to the garden concert and some friends of mine were going but I had to work..I think that was the last time she really played a set of her own songs(correct me if I am wrong)..or was it the dylan/morrison shows? either way..I would love to hear her play Ludwig's Tune just her and her piano..I know she sang it on the BSN tour but it just wasn't the same or the interlude from Down To You omg that is just superb..Gets me every time! Well the sun is about to rise ofve little italy but I had to get this off my chest..have a great weekend all! xoxo peace kev - --------------------------------- Never miss a thing. I was driving around the Philly area in a rental car with a tape player (I got it originally on cassette and have since transferred it to CD) and when she sat down to play that piano I darn near had to pull over on the shoulder as I found it so intimate and moving. It was almost as if we were hearing the spontaneous beginning of a new Joni song. And like you say, the re-configured songs are equally enjoyable and the interview is fun, lively and informative. It's all one big upper. Glad you're enjoying it, and I'm happy to share it...hide it under a bushel - NO! I'm gonna let it SHINE. It seems the same questions are asked when interviewing Joni so what is she going to say but the same ol' answers? Sure, she could blow the questions off (like some musicians do) but that'd only make her look like an a-hole so she answers them. I don't have a problem with Joni expressing the competitiveness of female artists in the 60's/70's because I'm sure there was just as there was competitiveness among the bands in the 60's (and beyond) and some of the male artists. And if Joni felt like Janis Joplin didn't like her and Joan Baez wanted to break her limbs, well that's just what she felt so I can't say it's wrong or just paranoia (although as I already expressed my dislike for Baez I would not be surprised about her hating almost everyone). We all feel that way with different people whether it's real or not and Joni (and Baez and Joplin) had the whole trying to make good albums-be successful-make a difference thing-do better than the next person- going for them which all of do not have when it comes to tensions between people. -Monika Marion Leffler wrote: I think the media has her down as the artist who will say unfavourable things about the music business. They expect it from her and they probably ask the same questions over and over again. I am not excusing Joni, she should find a way to put an end to this. It's boring to read, really, since we have heard it all before. Well, not the story about her difficulties with Janis Joplin maybe (Joan Baez we already knew about) but her other complaints. They were interesting reads although I don't appreciate some of the comments at the bottom of one of them. Someone said what does Joni know, afterall she dated one of the most gooey, pretentious pop stars ever--Graham Nash. Well, in Nash's defense I don't think anyone who really is familiar with his music or his personality (through interviews and what others say) could say he was ever pretentious. He's one of the most grounded, down to earth fellows in the music industry...and that's saying a lot since most of them are not grounded. And...Joni is not "crackers"...................................................(as someone suggested in the comments section) -Monika Barbara Stewart wrote: Independent UK http://news.independent.co.uk/media/article3347975.ece ==== Today's Guardian (Jan.18), with reference to JM interview in this month's "Mojo" music magazine from the UK. http://blogs.guardian.co.uk/music/2008/01/woman_v_woman.html and http://music.guardian.co.uk/print/0,,332131093-122385,00.html B - --------------------------------- Looking for last minute shopping deals? The stripped down versions of the songs are terrific and the technical details fascinating. Oh to have been there. It also made me go back and listen to DED again which i haven't played in a while, it really is a milestone album in Joni's musical development in some ways and the significant influence of Larry Klein is apparent as Joni acknowledges in the discussion: "is he the bass player in my band or am i the singer in his band?". As i seem to recall reading the involvement of Thomas Dolby created certain difficulties on a personal level during the making of DED even though he was "really excited" initially about his paticipation in the project. Joni's impromptu performance of "The Last Time I Saw Richard" as an elderly chanteuse is priceless. I was listening to Night Ride Home last night... a beautiful album that I hadn't listened to in a while... I remember when the story about Kilauren surfaced I heard these lines from Nothing Can Be Done and immediately thought that this particular verse was a reference to her: Must I surrender With grace The things I loved when I was younger (Sweet embrace) Must I remember your face So well What do I do here with this hunger in particular the part about remembering her face and what do I do here with this hunger... very poignant... hope everyone is doing well, it's bitterly cold here today in the middle of the Midwest USA... about zero... so come in from the cold... ... signing off for now, Peace, David - --------------------------------- Be a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all with Yahoo! Actually, the band was Rudy Colombini and the False Gods, doing great 60's covers and Rudy's original songs. In my new incarnation, as a budding rock photographer, I took over 250 photos of the band. And got the great joy of having a sexy, rich, rock and roll singer staring into my eyes singing "I'll work two jobs ,seven days a week and bring my money home to you". If only that would happen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Anyway, if you ever get the chance to see either the URS or Rudy and the False Gods, go!!!! ------------------------------ End of JMDL Digest V2007 #543 ***************************** ------- Post messages to the list by clicking here: mailto:joni@smoe.org Unsubscribe by clicking here: mailto:joni-digest-request@smoe.org?body=unsubscribe -------
