Sweet. Thanks so much for sending it around. Reminded me of the one time I saw Paul Butterfield with a reconstituted band at a divey place with great acoustics just a few months before he passed away. I remember being so excited to have the chance to finally see and hear him live and then being so shocked when he was suddenly gone. Oh, but how that music lives on. Sherelle - please do try to come out and go with me to see Robben!! It is interesting that his upcoming shows at Catalina are not listed on his official site - of course, that makes me go "hmmmm" and wonder what surprise big cats might show up ;-) I will fall off my chair if Larry Carlton sits in there. Ed and I picked Paz up Wednesday night, and had a wonderful dinner along with David Mingus and David Rolls. It was like a mini Jonifest, only without Joni (or a fest). While Paz and I were waiting at the table for the rest of the gang, he was telling me all about managing the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. A long gray haired guy sitting at the next table comes over and asks Paz if he's in a band. He then introduces himself, and it's Ricky Medlocke from Lynyrd Skynyrd. Apparently he lives part time down here in Ft. Myers. (Made me feel young again. LOL) So we have a real nice dinner outside, and we introduce Michael to some of our friends that happened to be dining as well. One of our friends who goes by the name "Stacks" is from New Orleans, and was so thrilled to meet Mikey and hear about the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. He wanted to see the band, but mostly to bring his 88 yr. old friend "Miss Norma" to the concert. Fast forward to last night. I meet up with Paz, my friend Stacks, and Miss Norma at the concert. The band was fantastic, and it was great seeing the sold out elderly crowd stomping their feet and clapping their hands to that great New Orleans jazz. After the concert, Paz let us go back stage and meet the band members. Miss Norma was so thrilled since she had a lot in common with the band members. I had no idea until later on, that Miss Norma was Norma Miller, also known as the Queen of Swing. She was a famous dancer in her younger day. She knew Ella Fitzgerald, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Billie Holiday, Benny Goodman, and the list goes on. Besides dancing, she was an actress, comedian, author, and choreographer. She even appeared in one of my favorite old movies, the Marx Brothers "A Day at the Races" One of the band members remembered her. Anyway, she retired to Ft. Myers and they are doing a documentary about her. So after saying good-bye to Michael, I hung around outside with my old friend "Stacks," and my new friend "Miss Norma," who had fascinating tales about the old days. What a wonderful woman. And Impossible Dreamer was the very first Joni's 1980's song that i got. And I llllove the sound. Why? I guess this is just a personal taste. I like songs that sound like Madonna's Live To Tell or Berlin's Take My Breath Away. And Impossible Dreamer really fits the category. I love everything about the song, the sound, the lyric, the way how Joni sang the song, et al. My second song from DED was Lucky Girl. I love it too. The beauty of music is how much there is to discover out there. I just "discovered" Timi Yuro last week and spent days reading about her and her career and listening to her on You Tube. What a joy that was. Remember, for every well known talent out there who had made the big time, there are thousands more of equal talent who have not. I've long been a fan of Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings. A great talent who has been plugging along for a long time. Then her Dap Kings recorded for an unknown quirky singer Amy Winehouse on Back to Black. Now Sharon is getting the attention she deserves. In fact I'm going to see her in Tampa on Saturday night. They expect it from her and they probably ask the same questions over and over again. I am not excusing Joni, she should find a way to put an end to this. It's boring to read, really, since we have heard it all before. Well, not the story about her difficulties with Janis Joplin maybe (Joan Baez we already knew about) but her other complaints. CC, you said that you think we are not complete as individuals until we are orphaned. I think you do have a point there but some of us get orphaned long before they can handle being complete individuals. Of course, in Joni's case, she was lucky (or unlucky, depending on how you look at it. She seemed to struggle for if not individuality then integrity in her relationship with her mother longer than most of us. I am of course thinking of "Happiness is the best face lift"). Thank you for posting these Bob. I have never heard these versions before. I have always had a soft spot for the songs on DED, and these softer, stripped down versions really help hear the true core of this music that turned out so differently in the final versions. I love the passion and fire of DED, and have always thought that the cover art is some of Joni's most evocative. I first heard this album in the late 80's, when I was in high school. The sounds were not too jarring to me, because it sounded a lot like other things I was listening to at the time. It seemed strangely different from WTRF, which I also had and knew that it was the release prior to DED. I like all of the work in Joni's 80's period. A lot of is has to do with the of my life I guess, my mother used to play WTRF in the car when I was in elementary school, and DED and CMIARS also became favorites of mine. I thought that the Geffen box was a fitting tribute to this somewhat unappreciated Joni period. I hope that it turned some people on to these great records. I also loved the arrogance! "You didn't buy 'em the first time, so here they are again in one box!" I love it. I lurk a lot and post a little, but am glad to be in the company of these diverse Joni fans... I learned alot from the interviews also..It gives great insight into dog eat dog..and Like I said before..The "doodle'n" on the piano is priceless..You can almost cut it out and it would be a singular joni song..Thank you again!! KEVIN DOHENY wrote: Thank you very much Bob! :) Bob Muller wrote: All this talk about DED now - this has been widely distributed but given that there are lots of newbies (and probably lurker newbies, we have no way of knowing), I thought I would take the liberty of offering up this SENSATIONAL 1985 "Rock Master Class" interview with Joni and Klein from 1985. Even if you don't put Dog Eat Dog at the top of the heap of your favorite Joni's, you'll find a lot to like here. A great interview, unplugged performances of three songs from DED, and a mind-blowing piano improvisation where we get to see some of her Paprika-like chordal thinking at work. Preservation Hall Jazz Band totally rocked tonight in Athens! It was a nice small venue (200 or so people) and had such and intimate feel. A highlight for me was a surprise rendition of "Georgia on my Mind" which was a big hit here in Athens. This is my second time catching N.O. PHJB and will definitely not be my last. The guys in the band are so classy and totally remembered meeting me in Atlanta, asked me how I'd been doing, a class act all around. A friend of Kevin's (production manager) took us out after the show for a night on the town and we hung at a popular Athens bar for awhile, checking out the scene, chatting with some interesitng local UGA students. Starting to fade a little bit though the great thing is, I can sleep in till 9 or 10 or so but Michael and band have to leave at 7 am.....yikes! Rock on!!!!!!
