Did you get Okkervil River's Blonde in the Bleachers? A rave from Rolling Stone: But the highlight [of Golden Opportunities] is the cover of Joni Mitchell's somber avant-jazz piece, "The Blonde in the Bleachers," for which Sheff recorded his vocals in the stairwell of a hotel in Germany. The thing is so pristinely cut that you can even hear an irritated cleaning lady making a fuss a few floors below. I was in 5th grade, one of my schoolmates went. And of course, some of those southern bars were so rowdy, there was chicken wire between the band and the crowd, for protection. On the other end of the spectrum, Pete Townsend whacked Abbey Hoffman off the stage with his guitar when he tried to make a political speech (at Woodstock??), and there is that footage of Keith Richards nailing a charging fan with his Telecaster. The solo set was wonderful, though. Do that sort of thing in private...in a bathroom....not a concert. I guess quite a few people do things they wouldn't when high and drunk though. I've got an example of bad behavior not during a show but right before a show that was evident during the show (that sentence could be confusing!). There is actual footage of this on YouTube and on Who videos. In '73 I believe it was, Keith Moon took a bunch of horse tranquilizers before a Who gig. Well, during the show he passed out and Pete Townshend invited an audience member to come play the drums for the rest of the Who concert. But that was Keith Moon. Often he's more known for his bad behavior than anything else. There was also a famous incident with the Sex Pistols with a real a-hole in the audience. Sid Vicious was playing (or pretending to play anyhow) bass when some girl waved him closer in the audience. He moved closer and she punched him in the face. He retaliated by spitting his blood in her face. Of course there were many violent incidents during punk shows. It was also very popular to throw bottles at them all the time. I'll tell you something. I like the Sex Pistols but even if I had been alive, you couldn't have paid me to go a show of theirs. Those shows were always violent. That was the trend. Oh and then there's the incident with Roger Waters that inspired the entire Wall album. Some kid was being really loud in the audience and lighting off firecrackers which pissed off Waters. Waters spit in the fan's face and this guilt and realization of a "wall between him and fans" inspired the whole Wall album. I really wonder who that kid was. I would have owned up to that! I was an a-hole lighting off firecrackers and Roger Waters spit in my face and then wrote the Wall! -Monika Jerry Notaro wrote: The worst behavior I have ever seen onstage is the previously discussed Eric Clapton. Joni band member Robben Ford (Hissing and Miles of Aisles) is on tour coming to a town near you! And he is playing a 2 week stretch with fellow Joni band alum Larry Carlton at the end of February, beginning of March. Link below to the tour dates. He is also playing here in L.A. at Catalina Jazz Club March 14 - 16 and Soho in Santa Barbara for Kate on January 30th. (Sherelle, he is also a Michael McDonald alum so I hope you can catch him!). I love reading his bio - influenced by the Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Clapton, Led Zep and Jimi back in the day and went on to play in Miles Davis' band. I have tried to see him for years - it is rare when he tours - so check him out! http://www.robbenford.com/RobbenFordMain.html Kakki ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 17 Jan 2008 02:28:13 +0100 From: "Laurent Olszer" Subject: Dog Eat Dog Like and Dislike Lori wrote : Then again, for me, Joni's albums have always provided a soundtrack for what was happening in my life at the time I discovered each of them, whether I bought them as they were released or happened upon older ones in used record stores or friends' collections.
