(njc) [Victor Johnson Subject: presidential election and debates, njc Hi everyone. . I am behind on reading the list and I hope to catch up soon. I miss you. I saw the debates on Saturday night. . . the republicans and the democrats. I liked the format. I think it was beneficial to the democrats to be presented second. I think it was also beneficial to the democrats to have 4 candidates to the republican 6 candidates present I feel that each democrat each got more time to speak. If you did not happen to see this debate I heard that they will be shown again. I think that you would want to see this. It was very interesting. There is a sharp contrast between the democrats and the republicans. . I applaud the democratic candidates. (I really did stand and applaud them after they spoke). I feel like we have some very good candidates. I also like what Ron Paul had to say very much. I feel he is not, what I would call, a republican. I like when he said that other countries do not like us because we occupy and set up military bases without them wanting us there and he encouraged us to look at the real reasons why other countries dislike us so. This is not emphasized enough. I feel that now we must choose the democratic candidate who can WIN the election. It is either Edwards, Obama or Clinton. Which of these three candidates can best win in November? THIS to me is the most important question. I wish we for sure knew the answer to this. It is very important. The republicans held their trump card close to their chest during the debate when asked about Barak Obama. I believe they are waiting until (or if) Obama wins the primary. I am thinking only of strategy here. I feel Obama would be a very good president. However, I had heard that republicans are donating money to the obama campaign because they know they can defeat him. . . (whether or not this is true I do not know). I have read that email that slashes obama. . it is being sent out there. . . things that give the American public doubts about him. . . (for the record, I do NOT have doubts about him. . I feel he is a good man). All I am saying is that we must NOT have one of those five republicans in office. . I feel it would be very detrimental to our country. . . to our children. We must send the candidate that will win. Forgive me if I do not sound favorable towards Obama. I like him very much. Even though I really wish I'd had access to this great library 20 years ago, I have to say it has come into my life at a great time now. I have finally picked up my dusty guitar after a long break, and now I find that I can't put it down. Hour after joyful hour, struggling and twisting my brain and my fingers around all this fabulous stuff. My head and my heart are reeling with the absolute joy of finally being able to play these beautiful songs. I did the "no food no bathroom thing" for Joni, August 1974. I'd been camping at Mont Tremblant w/ three friends and we went into Montreal to end our trip, where we heard that Joni was going to be there in 2 or 3 days. Two friends had to go back to CT, but "hell, no...I won't go!". My b/f's parents wired us fifty dollars (you should have seen it fly away!) and for a few nights (two, I think), we had to sleep in the car. The city cops kept knocking on our windows the first night, so the second night we parked in some farmer's (not Yasgur's) huge field somewhere in the outskirts, where we could really find relief. We had no money, and no food except for peanut butter and ketchup (that was before it was a vegetable) and some kind of herb. ; ) The morning of the concert our old Volvo was stuck in the mud and I don't know how we got it out of there but we did. Sheer determination, I suppose. It was raining and raining, and it was late afternoon when the sun came out and it was announced that the show would go on. She was beautiful and did most of C & S and lots from Blue and FTR. The wind was in from somewhere and her hair was blowin' in it, whipping over the microphone stand. Just a magical evening. I wish I could remember more details...we were drinking (now I say "BLECH!) Canadian whiskey (when in Canada?) sitting on blankets. I guess I was singing along when a nice guy in front of us politely turned around and said: "You have a nice voice, but I really came to hear Joni" so I stopped singing, rather unaware that I even "had" been. Oops! She was wearing white jeans and an apricot/peach-colored top. Something in the way she moved her hips and her shoulders.... I do remember the long night ride home. At customs the immigration man asked us if we had "any narcotics or drugs or contraband" and my b/f said: "Nah, we're all out. That's why we're going home." I could have smacked him! Luckily the guy just waved us on. One headlight (the other was knocked out when we drove it into a ditch at Mont Tremblant) through the darkness darkness darkness no color no contrast of northern Vermont. No streetlights or tungsten stars or any light whatsoever but our little beam in the darkness. It was about a 6 hour drive, I think. We were starving but happy and high on Joni. No food or money. We didn't have charge cards then and we were very worried about running out of gas. Somehow, we made it into his parents' driveway on fumes. Would I do it again? I saw this fabulous video and encourage everyone who is interested in the viability of our planet to watch....it's great and the web site is terrific: http://www.storyofstuff.com/index.html Ah....my faves from Wild Things...."Ladies'Man"..."Be Cool"..."Man To Man"....I loved Joni's art work on that album. Patti, I can't wait to get "Hotel California"...thanks for letting us know. Your posts are always so much fun, informative and just so funny! I love them/you! Aha..a fellow Lady of Woodstock!!! Kate, we probably were gliding down mud-slides together and didn't know it!!! This generation does seem to be very interested in the 1960's..early 1970's. It's fun to talk to younger people and discover that they're feeling things I'm feeling that were given birth in the '60's. Monika, I was thinking a lot about what you wrote about how much we really share about ourselves...and what we don't share. I have been told that I'm a very "open" person...that I share things about myself that other people might not want to share because of fear of judgment from others. I've changed since my enormous losses beginning in 2000...much more reserved...less likely to share anything about myself but will always listen to other people. I just don't remember ever feeling judgmental about what someone tells me or what someone looks like. This, I guess, is how I came into the world and also how I was raised. I think a lot about why it's so important to so many people that they come across as in-style....read the best-sellers...see the "in" movies...and the list goes on. And I wonder why people are so self-possessed....why people put such an emphasis on what a person looks like...the power of beauty. I've spent my entire career and studies trying to understand what makes a person feel a certain way...act a certain way...of course, this is all couched in mental health. I do know this: I've always felt that I was "different"...I did really wild stuff as a kid...young adult...not so much any longer...but I always and still feel I would sort of fit with the "Bloomsbury" groups....the salons...NOT that I have the talent or intellect of those gorgeous people...but I would feel at home. I've been listening to "Miles Of Aisles"...sooooo, what's your favorite cut? Mine? MMMM....I think "Jericho" and when I listen to "The Last Time I Saw Richard" I have to laugh...my wanker was Richard!!!! This isn't a fair question with this Joni album....I just thought of that, because it's a concert. Much love to you, Bo - --------------------------------- Never miss a thing. This one beats those hands down. (It was "Squiddly" on that Canadian Tribute called "Back To The Garden", so you were very close.) Then again, either you or I could turn in something and probably sound better than those two. Our good & talented friend David Lahm turns in a fine rendition of it on his first Joni Tribute disc as well. He was interviewed in advance of the book release and I was riveted by his tales. I am a huge fan of Clapton's music and his personal story seemed very interesting. Don't know if the book will live up to his own discussion about it, but your post nudged me to order it tonight. Kate - not having the book yet, I recommend it to you, nonetheless, because it seems to be a very uplifting story based on what I have heard from him about it. I also have a number of friends who have successfully recovered. After knowing a few who never quite made it, it is heartening to know the ones who have done so, with all their talents and abilities still intact and better than ever. A friend invited me to this concert for New Years Eve, but I didn't think I could sit still long enough on party night and also had other engagements. After reading this review in the L.A. Times, I kind of sighed. This sounded really fabulous. Former locals Rufus Wainwright and Belinda Carlisle make French music pop. By Richard Cromelin, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer January 2, 2008 PATRONS walking out of Walt Disney Concert Hall into the first moments of 2008 early Tuesday morning, some of them bedecked with the gold metallic streamers that had erupted at midnight, could hear the insistent thump of electronic dance music from one of the evening's open-air downtown events. That sound, along with some hip-hop and assorted forms of rock, dominated the L.A. entertainment landscape on New Year's Eve, but the Disney Hall experience was altogether different -- a relatively sedate program of French pop music, a party where everyone stayed in their seats and you couldn't even bring Champagne into the auditorium. Serving a more sedentary and sophisticated audience, "A Night in Paris" filled the niche that's been occupied in past years by acts such as Pink Martini, but the real draw was the unusual pairing of two performers not particularly identified with French music, Rufus Wainwright and Belinda Carlisle. It was a homecoming of sorts for the latter, who fronted the Go-Go's during the Los Angeles band's rags-to-riches passage from punk-rock novices to pop-rock princesses. She lives in France now, and her 2007 album "Voila," a collection of French music, provided the five songs in her set, as well as the version of Serge Gainsbourg's "Bonnie et Clyde" she sang later with Wainwright. The two ended the night with the Go-Go's hit "Our Lips Are Sealed," in French, of course. During the second of Monday's two concerts, Carlisle was somewhat formal in manner and delivery, but the material was strong and varied, from the swirling, carnival waltz of "Sous le Ciel de Paris" to the Velvet Underground-like folk-rock of Frangoise Hardy's "Pourtant Tu M'Aimes." Carlisle packed most of her concentration into Lio Ferri's hyper-dramatic "Avec le Temps." A troupe of six dancers gyrated to her version of Frankie Laine's operatic 1951 hit "Jezebel," and it periodically returned to romp through the plush salon furnishings of the stage set. Both singers were accompanied by a six-piece band led by local pianist Dave Palmer, a versatile and sharp outfit that did some hot-jazz vamping during interludes. Wainwright had quite a run in the Southland in 2007, from his concerts at Coachella and the El Rey Theatre in the spring to his high-profile tribute to Judy Garland at the Hollywood Bowl and finally his year-ending duties Monday. The acclaimed singer-songwriter grew up in Quebec and is based in New York, but he has deep roots in Los Angeles, where he lived when he recorded his first album in 1997, and he was joined for a few songs by locally based Frenchwoman Bernadette Colomine. Wainwright's adherence to the show's Parisian theme was somewhat loose, a fact that he milked for some humorous mileage. His portion of the evening included his recent English-language ballad "Leaving for Paris," a folky French-Canadian "response" singalong, and a version of "Moon Over Miami" done in French ` la Josephine Baker. Wainwright delivered some fiercely focused performances. His solo reading of "La Complaint de la Butte" brought the audience to hushed attention, and he sang his version of the Christmas song "Minuit Chretien" ("O Holy Night") in a high register that made his voice pure and steady, without the signature wobble that distinguishes his singing but can also distract from a lyric. But it was the sparkly-suited singer's ebullient personality that carried the evening. Giddy and goofy, Wainwright made the room feel intimate and the sentiments genuine. It might not have been a definitive exposition of French popular music, and you might not have been able to raise your glass with his, but you felt as if you were celebrating with a friend. And that's what counted, in any language. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 7 Jan 2008 23:57:37 -0500 From: Victor Johnson Subject: LSU wins National Championship!
