Some nice harmonies and I love the strings intro. Some fresh touches on ACOY to my ears. The rock & roll world she was living in was very different from mine. I did go back to the garden, along with many others during the 1970's. It was a remarkable experiment in leaving behind material things & hedonistic lifestyles, to dedicate our hearts & hands to living & working close to nature while seeking to put basic spiritual practices into everyday life. On one level it was hugely successful. On another level, it was not sustainable in that particular form due to what I would sum up as flaws in human nature that were unable to be addressed. Ironically, I was just talking to someone yesterday who observed our particular experiment & who felt that our efforts had had forever changed her life & the culture of our local community (& perhaps beyond) in positive ways that were irrevocable in spite of the flaws. I am still close to many from those days & impressed with the way many are still manifesting the ideals of their youth into the world. We did change the world in many ways. And still are. Happy New Year to all! Kate "In their youth, my generation was ready to change the world, but when the baton was passed to them in the '70s, they fell into a mass depression because all revolutionaries are quick to demolish and slow to fix. When handed the baton to fix it, they didn't know what to do so they kind of degenerated into the greediest generation in the history of America: she is talking about my generation and what she says certainly is true of me at times. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 4 Jan 2008 14:20:11 -0500 From: Victor Johnson Subject: Re: Decemberists NJC On Jan 3, 2008, at 4:49 PM, Garret wrote: > Hey Victor, > I have been loving the decemberists for a while now. That's cool that you got to see them live. I was listening to "The Crane Wife" the other day and parts of it reminded me a lot of Jethro Tull, the orchestration they were using. I had seen the name before in the past couple of years but didn't really check them out till someone recently turned me on to Neutral Milk Hotel, and from there saw a reference to The Decemberists so I ordered one and soon ordered three more. I'm remembering how much I enjoy discovering new music to listen to. It just goes to show there's always something out there if you look hard enough or at least try to be open to the idea of discovering something you haven't heard before. I've also been getting into Louden Wainright who I had never really listened to but heard "The Art Teacher" on local radio which prompted me to get "Rufus Does Judy" and "Release the Stars"...he has such an amazing voice! Victor NP: nothing as I'm fixing to head out the door. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 4 Jan 2008 18:34:16 -0600 From: Michael Paz Subject: Re: Happy new year NJC DAMMIT! It took easily a whole hour just standing in line to go to one of the 2 dozen portojohns that were all lined up in a nice row...then if you wanted another beer it was ANOTHER hour standing in the beer line. But fortunately my friends brought me one. When we decided to leave the throng and climb back up the hill I found myself climbing over mountains of beer cans literally and sliding in between the mass of people that were still braving the crowd, barely finding room to move. The hill was much nicer though at that point, we were even further away from the massive stage. I'd love to see DMB again but hopefully in a much smaller venue! I've thought about picking that recording up...despite all I mentioned above it truly was a riveting performance. I was with the video crew so I was able to get Freda and Julian in the pit right in front of Dave 15' away from him and barricades between us and the unwashed. Sometimes it is so cool to do what I do and other times I hate being me. Paz (who sometimes LIKES being with the unwashed) P.S> I could have taken advantage of my Jazz Fest status and been ON stage for Joni that year, but I really just wanted to be on of those 30,000 people that were there when she started and less than 5000 before when she finished. Here's the way I filter the top 100. It looks like Niki rolled several songs from some artists into one pick. 96. Eddie Vedder Far Behind (there were stronger songs on the album) 39. Kim Richey Chinese Boxes 33. Louden Wainwright III Daughter (I love this one) 20. Judith Owen Happy This Way (any friend of Paz'es is a friend of mine) 18. Bruce Springsteen Magic (I would have picked several other tracks from this album first) 9. Patty Griffin Getting Ready (always solid) 8. Joni Mitchell Big Yellow Taxi (2007) (I would have picked several other tracks from this album first) 7. Feist 1234 I like all of 'em except the Plant/Krauss collaboration which clocked in at #1; I just don't get it. But it's very novel to see Joni on a radio station's year-end top 10! We should take turns feeding that bear. Congratulations, Alison, with your new baby! Leave it to Paz to think of Myrtle as a Joni name. Ha! Actually I have an aunt who was named Myrtle Louise! She hated it and legally changed it to just Louise as an adult. (Think she suffered from the turtle and other references as a kid). How about Corrina Rose for the next one? ;-) Kakki ------------------------------ End of JMDL Digest V2007 #524 ***************************** ------- Post messages to the list by clicking here: mailto:joni@smoe.org Unsubscribe by clicking here: mailto:joni-digest-request@smoe.org?body=unsubscribe -------
