You make quite a few good points as well. Not everyone was a hippie back in the 60's. I don't know what exactly Joni was referring to when she made these comments about her generation but often Joni is tied in with the counterculture (whether or not she bought into it) and yes, that is what I was talking about. It could be she was talking about just her own side of things--the musicians who too failed to actually change much or something else all together. I personally volunteer to meet her in person to ask her to clarify all that was said (on behalf of the JMDL of course). :) But I still think that to change anything of the system you have to be on the inside (not the outside looking in) to do so. -Monika - --------------------------------- Looking for last minute shopping deals? The soundtrack was #11 on my top ten list.< My #1 also; of course I only saw a small handful of movies at the theater, having converted to Netflix and all-DVD land. La Vie En Rose was another favorite, and Sicko, No End In Sight, and Crazy Love were all excellent documentaries. Just saw Eastern Promises this week and it is another David Cronenberg one-of-a-kind gem. Superbad and Knocked Up were a bit adolescent but had some of the most honest and funniest writing I've seen in a while. Talk To Me proved once again that Don Cheadle is one of the best actors out there, and Away From Her was one of the most beautiful and heartbreaking films I've ever seen. Looking forward to seeing a couple of the others on your list when they come out on disc. A while back I came across a great little site called Guitar Player TV @ http://guitarplayertv.com which features a large selection of free guitar tuition videos in a multitude of different styles. In addition to doing the website's introduction, Larry Carlton also has his own channel called 335 Blues - http://snipurl.com/335blues where he demonstrates how to build up a blues guitar arrangement. Even if you don't have time to watch all the videos on his channel don't miss "Stormy, 3: Soloing" where, as he says on the following section, he goes "to the zone" - oh so good!! Found an interesting little article from Performing Songwriter in the jmdl library where he's talking about the importance of thinking and playing like an arranger when doing sessions. "You have to be able to improvise arrangements on the spot to be a great accompanist. It's what you do with the phrases around the vocal that can make the whole thing sound more connected." As an example, he points to a song from one of his most memorable sessions, Joni Mitchell's Court and Spark. Carlton says, "I think there's a very good example of how to think like an arranger. When Joni sings, 'Help me, I think I'm falling,' I do a rake across the strings, and it makes her next phrase - 'in love again' - really cool because she has a chord to sit down on." Aslo found this great video of him playing with another of Joni's guitar sidemen, Robben Ford (who I saw with the LA Express and Joni at London's New Victoria Theatre on the Miles of Aisles tour back in the day), here playing a concert together in Tokyo - takes the soundman a while to sort out Larry's guitar sound but when he does it's ab fab! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jBS7BEPb1Jk Happy New Year to all Paul Castle NP False Hearted Lover Blues by Levon Helm - from 'Dirt Farmer' - would get my grammy vote if I had one! ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 3 Jan 2008 14:40:37 -0600 From: Michael Paz Subject: Best of 2007 Hello All Here is my best of 2007. That was the exact moment (the steamroom) we decided we had had enough and turned it off. I never did get into Cronenberg's movies because the gore is just a bit too realistic, so I really just avoid his films. Terry Gilliam I can take because he's just plain weird along with the violence so it makes it funny in a sick and weird sort of way. With "Sweeney Todd", there were times the kids and I kind of half turned away going, "Eeeeewww" but giggling like idiots just the same. There were a few people who walked out of that one. Maybe they didn't know what the plot was. Catherine ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Looking for a X-Mas gift?
