Thanks for another fine effort. Just a little more information of Chanel Cole. She was a top 12 contestant on Australian Idol in 2005 (or 2006) which this recording comes from. She is actually a New Zealander living on the NSW south coast. I somehow missed this particular performance. She was a front runner for me. Especially after her performance of the Portishead song, Glory Box and Burt Bacharach's, Walk On By. I had a sneaking suspicion she was a Joni fan. Jerry ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 2 Jan 2008 08:56:23 -0800 (PST) From: Monika Bogdanowicz Subject: Re: speaking of Mrs. Dalloway NJC Well I finished Mrs. Dalloway yesterday evening. It took me longer than it normally would as I have been sick as of late. Anyway, overall I enjoyed the book. I really liked the writing style--stream of consciousness as it is called. I won't lie though. It threw me for a loop in the beginning. It definitely isn't like any other book. In the beginning I was a little confused but only for a short time as I understood the style and direction of the book. I could understand that this book could possibly be an acquired taste perhaps due to the writing style. I could see some put off by its long sentences but to me it was quite fascinating. What I particularly enjoyed was going into the minds of the characters. The plot itself was very simple--an upper class woman throwing a party (wondering if she married the right man too) but the lagnuage itself was far from simple. You got more than a glimpse into peoples' thoughts. At first I thought, man some of these people are mean, but I then realized some of our thoughts (or atleast some of mine or those who speak without thinking) can be very mean. We have a tendency to purify what we say and this book seemed to examine that. Everyone was quite polite to each other's faces but man oh man some of the things they thought! I have to say I also really enjoyed Peter's character. His obsession with Clarissa was sort of humorous. There he spent his all time being critical of her, explaining his love for another woman, yet it was Clarissa who occupied his mind....not to mention the end when he saw her again. He wasn't in love with her though as he told himself....yeah right. I also liked Septimus' character and felt very sorry for his wife. I think it was a bright idea to show how one's loved ones suffer too when someone close is dealing with mental illness. It seems we tend to forget that mental illness effects everyone around whoever is suffering from some sort of mental illness. I do like how that was highlighted. As for Clarissa Dalloway, I'm not sure if I'm supposed to feel sorry for her or not. She always put on a show for others--the perfect hostess....the upper class woman.....the dignified woman....the happily married woman, etc. But we (the readers) see that she is much more capable of feeling than what she shows to others and than what others realize. Quite a few people in this story call her cold, icy, snobby, etc but all fail to realize she is more than that...but that is Clarissa's own fault. So that is why I am not sure if I am to feel sorry for her or not. People fail to realize the true essence of Mrs. Dalloway but then again she never gives them a chance by always putting on a show. You know? Anyway, those are my thoughts on the book at this time. It was a good read and I'd recommend it to others. -Monika - --------------------------------- Looking for last minute shopping deals? Find them fast with Yahoo! Most of the youngsters of my generation camping out on the land had grown up in well-to-do homes and, as it turned out, did not shake off their roots. They went back to college and got steady, well-paid jobs. Joni was honest when she said that her attempt at getting herself back to the garden failed because she was too urban. It's hard to break away from civilization;.) Of course there are exceptions. Some settled as farmers and produced ecological food. Also, not everybody was a hippie in the 60's. Most young people went to school, then got a job, like their parents before them. Sometimes I think the hippie culture is getting too much credit for having shaped the youth culture of the 60's. There were other ideals as well, radical left wing ideas. To me it seems that these ideas had a more lasting impact after all, at least in Europe and maybe most of all in Sweden. I am thinking of inexpensive daycare for children, free schools for everyone, a real chance for higher education regardless of social standing, women's liberation, social equality etc. And these issues seem to be important to the present young generation as well. They just go about their goals in different ways. Every generation has complained about the ones coming after them. The older generation has always found faults with the young generation. I'm not saying this applies to you or everyone as a whole but I can understand what she is saying. But then again, did Joni's generation really change the world? Her generation, her youth consisted of well, sure folks connecting with each other, but also just some lying around (or dancing around) smoking marijuana. The intentions were there but the whole "drop out" theory works only on paper. You can't change anything by just sitting around thinking you want to change something. I mean, did hippies, even with their good intentions, end Vietnam any sooner or do anything outside of their own, self enclosed, smoky world? My own generation suffers from, as I said, apathy. It is understandable though in a way--just wanting to get on with your day, doing the best you can, doing good for good's sake, but overall not changing anything outside of your own day-to-day life. Asked what she meant exactly, she went into overdrive. "In their youth, my generation was ready to change the world, but when the baton was passed to them in the '70s, they fell into a mass depression because all revolutionaries are quick to demolish and slow to fix. When handed the baton to fix it, they didn't know what to do so they kind of degenerated into the greediest generation in the history of America: she is talking about my generation and what she says certainly is true of me at times. but i think each generation suceeds and mucks things up. i chose to infiltrate - to teach and seed. i don't think joni is really gloomy. her laugh is too hearty. heart and humor and humility....and all that. talking about bad stuff can be a wake up call. np in my head, bonnie raitt singing randy newman's "guilty" . cheers lesli - --------------------------------- Be a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all with Yahoo! Just a word or so about Septimus. He suffered from post-traumatic stress syndrome, known as shell-shock in the years after the 1st World War. A lot of the soldiers who fought in that war came back with some form of it. There was very little known about this dis-order at the time and, of course, it was not treated properly. Some of Septimus and his wife's attitudes about the two doctors that 'treat' him are probably reflections of Woolf's own attitudes about the various doctors she saw and the treatments she underwent for her own mental illness. > As for Clarissa Dalloway, I'm not sure if I'm supposed to feel > sorry for her or not. Clarissa isn't easy, is she? The film version Mrs. Dalloway starred Vanessa Redgrave who made her seem very serene and gracious on the surface but somehow failed to capture the sharper edges that lie beneath Clarissa's facade. I love the passage where she's sitting in front of her mirror and thinking about how she pulls all of her different persona together into one diamond shape (her face) to show the world. I also think her reasons for marrying Richard instead of Peter are very intriguing. Thanks for your thoughts, Monika. I've read Mrs. Dalloway 3 times now, I think. Of course, I find something new in it everytime I read it. But I also find that it's easier to cruise through those long sentences each time. There is a definite rhythm to the writing in this novel and once I fall into it, I seem to sail through it. I am into politics and actively participate in campaigns in my area but this year I have a BIG request. In deference to non-USA listers, I ask that we limit USA political debate or discussion, and try to take things off list as often as possible. '07 was such a wonderful year, so rich in Joni creativity it would be fantastic to have the Joni content continue and not be overshadowed by US politics. My opinion. I would be interested to hear what others have to say. Suze n.p. I hope you all had a lovely holiday season and here's to a fantastic new year. I know mine will be busy, and hopefully healthy and trouble-free, since I am expecting my first baby! I'll be giving birth to a baby girl sometime in late april, so i'm sad to say, i won't be coming to jonifest! Even though Ashara and I both agree that it would make for a KILLER performance piece! I will be naming her after a joni song, guess which one, not chelsea, thank you very much. Don't tell my husband it's joni-related, or he'll nix it, pesky bastard! Anyway, I thought i better tell my friends at the jmdl about this pregnancy before she actually comes out...LOL. Also, have you heard the beautiful live version of James Taylor's "You can close your eyes" on the new One Man Band CD/DVD? Takes me back to that time i butchered it at jonifest with Bobsart. Listen to this new James version, it will make it all better. love and good wishes to each of you, Alison e. in slc np: new sampler of Drive by truckers tunes from the forthcoming album Brighter than Creation's Dark top ten for 2007: Shins: Wincing the Night Away, Joni: Shine, Ryan Adams: Follow the LIghts and Easy Tiger, Rufus Wainwright: Release the stars, Rilo Kiley: Under the blacklight, Crowded House: Time on earth, Son Volt: the search, Bettye Lavette: Scene of the crime ______________________________________________________________________ ______________ Never miss a thing.
