Thanks for the reminder, Bob. I've made a donation. It costs Les $95 a month to run the site and that's a bargain, IMO. It can't hurt to donate a few bucks if you can spare it. I agree with you about the MySpace/Facebook thingy. It's too hard to have real conversations about Joni's music or anything else on those sites because it's more of a bulletin board - you post something and it's unlikely anyone will respond. Facebook is a fun way to share pictures and so on with friends and family and a great way to waste time playing silly games, but that's about it. I joined MySpace only so I could post comments on other people's music. There are lots of musicians there, including many jmdler musicians. and you can hear their music online, which is great. Apart from that, I don't see much use for MySpace and keep forgetting I even have an account there until someone mentions it. 'Lush' and 'melodic' are surely the right words to convey some of the essential spirit of is work. It may be just a temporal coincidence, but I first encountered his music on the 'Netherlands' album, and particularly 'Scarecrow's Dream' This for me is a the essence of his music at a zenith, and I was pleased to read your reference to this song. (He dedicated this song to Don Quixote, Walt Disney, and the Wizard of Oz). No one seems to have mentioned his voice as yet....his vocal range was exceptional, about a full octave above any of these enthroned collaborators (Henly, Walsh, Souther). Hearing it thru the walls in Ann Arbor 1977, I thought it might have been a woman's voice. I think if the truth were known, he was actually a mentor to these guys, and countless others, and his influence and impact ranges far beyond the sales of his own albums. Thanks for a wonderful piece. And apologies if this has been posted before, but did anyone catch the review of Shine via the link above? Ouch! Here it is: Joni Mitchell is the kind of aging egoist who gives ecology a bad name. On her first album in five years and first for Starbucks -- a connection some anti-corporatists will foolishly disparage -- she rails against environmental ills with the privileged pique of someone who considers the world's failure to resemble the one she grew up in a cosmic affront. Skillfully marshaling the jazzy growl and desultory melodies she's cultivated for decades, she observes that "there's just too many people now," compares our world unfavorably to the Garden of Eden and heaps cell phones with her gorgeous wrath. Given Mitchell's talent and prestige, it's a waste of precious resources that she couldn't have emulated the kindhearted heroine of "Hana" when reminding the caffeinated consumer that nature is gravely out of whack. Instead, her most nuanced new lyric details an apostate tour-bus driver's descent into a luscious sin she probably knows better than she lets on. The runner-up is the title tune, where she grants the sun leave to bless all sinners -- even cell-phone users! Text her your thanks. A woman and her daughter I conversed with at a bookstore suggested I study the catholic saints through the book named, 'A Gnostic Book of Saints' which comes with a tarot deck of pretty painted saints. (This book must certainly be on the list of the millions of banned books by the catholic church.) That evening, I was studying the deck when I came across the Pope Joan card and my initial reaction was somewhat like, "Uh, yeah, whatever--with the 'history' of the Catholic Church and the Vatican Brotherhood, a woman would have never been able to rise the ranks amongst all of those 'holy men.' The book does says Pope Joan did truly exist and did run the Vatican. It also states she became pregnant. "Poor thing," I thought, "If Pope Joan could have been, she couldn't hide her so-called, "mortal sin," only because she was a chick. The Vatican Brotherhood of Secrecy could go on preaching and pretending purity with no outward signs of sin, like Joan did." The 'dreamy' thought of there having been a Pope Joan was just a turn off because of it's sheer absurdity thinking men would allow a woman in, thinking it was simply an ancient wishful notion/legend for hopeful catholic women, and I took it as a sign to put the tarot deck away since I was brought up in the church where everything spiritual beyond the teachings of Catholism is of the occult and an absolute 'no-no' (a very punishable sin.) Well, this past Saturday I was strolling the library's philosophy/religious section of works and came across this book, 'The Female Pope~~The Mystery of Pope Joan- - -The First Complete documentation of the Facts behind the Legend' by Rosemary and Darroll Pardoe. I checked it out and am studying the book any chance I can. All I can say so far, and having been born a cradle catholic, knowing much of the Catholic Church's his-story, it's all making sense and it is very possible she could have existed and then wiped out of their holy history to keep control of the masses that they own. Well, alot of catholic chicks are now coming out of them dungeons to teach the wolves dressed in sheep's clothing and who have never glimpsed their Groom and who conceal those hurtful stones behind their rosaries, a tough lesson in the truth, love and compassion the Magical Physician's all about! He's taking an AP History course (life is for learning) and told me he's always wanted to go to France, so I thought I'd reward his hard work. He's the sweetest kid and even tolerates me talking about Joni. The waitresses were all wearing -- ha! not black diamond earrings -- but those push-up brassieres under their sexy old French dresses. (I think he may have noticed that....mdr!) (mdr = lol en francais). There is a woman singing on this site but I don't know who she is. Christian, connaissez-vous cette chanteuse? Christophe got Caneton de la Saison and I had Coquilles Versailles for our entrees. This place is muy expensivito (one of my brothers thought I was right out of my head to go there) and when they brought the appetizer menu I gulped and said we would not be having an appetizer. ($18 bucks apiece, going up in smoke!) But they brought out a delicious amuse-guele, wonderful French bread, and a wilted spinach salad. Later the waitress apologized for the long wait for the entrees, and said "we will take care of dessert." Phew! Good thing because they were all 18 bucks, too! We both had the "Trio of La Caille desserts" because we were hungry for a sweeter fare, and you know three desserts are better than one! They were "magnifuque", Sherelle! ; ) I'm really glad I took him and I hope some of you will get the urge for going there, too. (In cyberspace, I mean.) I know it gave me and ole Boopsie a pleasant respite today. We all need a break sometimes. Bisous (what they do in France on Main Street), Patti P. It can be a little stressful this time of year, even though we're singing songs of joy and peace, so I thought I'd make you welcome in to the most beautiful restaurant I've ever been to. I shared it with a friend at work and she was so enraptured by the whole place that I thought: "Hey! I should share this with my Joni friends!" If you wish you had a river, take a little break from the crazy-you-get-from-too-much-choice Christmas shopping and come fly to France with me. Oui, messieurs et mesdames, you should get on this flight tonight and come to the dinner gong and feast your eyes on all the beauty in "this place". The grounds are gorgeous, especially with the white Christmas lights in the snow, in the foothills of Little Cottonwood Canyon (TIC! We are the ladies of the canyon....) And the food is to-die-for. If you have time, go to: http://lacaille.com/ On the bottom left, click on "dining at La Caille", and then go to "tour". You will get many seconds of wonder and delight. Wait til you see the pictures of the food. Oooh la la et mon Dieu! Look at those strawberries! The tarts. She brings us apples and cheeses. Notice the clean white linen. The United Palace Theatre is a magnificent venue for a concert: ornate, intimate, and built to carry sound. Something that wasnt' lost on Neil Young, which is what I wanted to share. Early in the first set, during a break between songs, Young commented on the beauty of the theatre and compared it to some of the places he's played: good and bad, big and small. But it was this glorious theatre in Harlem, he said, that was so special to him because it reminded him of the places he used to play in Winnipeg. Young then picked up his guitar and went on to make some beautiful music (he has a talent for it). But hearing that, was for me, the sweetest sound of the night. I am off to visit our family with my family in Honduras. I am looking forward to veggin out for two weeks and overeating and drinking. I am taking an acoustic guitar (how novel) and leaving my new VG-99 at home that I love so much but don't feel like fooling with just now. I have been busy programming new patches for all my Joni songs and being inspired by all the new sounds I am creating with the tunings with 12 strings, acoustics, electrics, and synthy sounds too. I would have love to bring my new toy to Jonifest in April but alas I will be in NB with the band. WE have a very busy April. Maybe later in the year there will be another gathering of the spirits. Anyways, have fun one and all and thanks to all the people who have sent cards and letters of Christmas (Smurph and Kakki esp). I wish you all health and happiness. News conference called Wednesday for a "major" announcement. By Darren Toms, Newsradio WTAM 1100 Wednesday, December 19, 2007 (Cleveland) - Is it really going to happen?! Is Cleveland actually going to host another Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony? Sure sounds like it. The Rock Hall and Cleveland City Hall have called a 1:15 news conference to discuss the, quote, "2009 Rock Hall induction ceremony and major rock hall initiatives designed to support the capital campaign." Among those attending the news conference will be Mayor Frank Jackson, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation President and CEO Joel Peresman and Rock Hall CEO Terry Stewart. The Rock Hall did hold one induction ceremony in Cleveland, but that was back in 1997. Inducted that year were Buffalo Springfield, Crosby Stills and Nash , Joni Mitchell, Parliament-Funkadelic, The (Young) Rascals, The Bee Gees and The Jackson Five The argument for holding the ceremony in New York has always been that The Big Apple was better equipped with hotels and amenities for the guests. The mayor's office will not comment further until the news conference. (Copyright ) 2007 Clear Channel. She grew up in the newborn state of Israel until her family moved to America in 1966. She had never really gotten into Joni, no matter how hard I tried to turn her on, until I burned her four songs from Travelogue a few years ago ~ STB, JSS, JOTMAS & LOVE. Today Monigue went on & on about how much she alohas SHINE. I found it interesting that her immediate favorite is Hana. This is no surprise to me because I absolutely adore Hana! Of course I love Amelia more ~ it's up there in my top ten fave Joni tunes. I find it amazing how incredibly diverse her music continues to be and am just SO grateful that I am able to deeply appreciate absolutely everything Joni has accomplished!!!
