It was good to see her in such a confident, happy mood! And I think she handled the question about her signing on for Starbuck bravely! She told the maybe not so pretty truth - they gave her a good deal, that's why she signed. I mean, she could have tried to find some other explanation, she could have lied about how she hadn't compromised with her beliefs and convictions - but she didn't. You've got to admire her honesty. He doesn't even mention the title track to Hejira which I think is an amazing song as well. Whether you like Amelia, C&S, Shine or whatever, I don't get it when people overly diss other works by Joni, just to make a particular work seem that much better." Victor (who performed Amelia at the first Jonifest I attended, doing a fine job with a deceptively difficult song to cover well) is generally loath to dwell too often on comparisons, whereas I fall into that trap too often, I concede. Here, I suspect our perspectives converge inadvertantly. Joni's work was so consistently excellent for such a long string of albums. It is that consistency that blows my find. LOTC, Blue, FTR, C&S, THOSL, Hejira, DJRD. Nary a mediocre song, much less anything less than an outstanding album, each album stretching her artistic limits beyond the reach - and sometimes realm - of its predecessor. And succeeding each time. To get a sense of that stretching, play LOTC and then DJRD in one sitting :-) (The touch on the studio Amelia that sends me is the slide guitar introduced later in the piece). The repetition the Kenny comments on is what sets the mood - it is the artistic incarnation of the driving through the burning desert. In that song, as in (for me) all of her greatest individual works, the common link is the truly uncommon connection between the lyrics and the music. Just not that uncommon for Joni. Melissa Errico returns with a fresh new show, "Blue Skies and Lullabies", directed by acclaimed cabaret star Mary Cleere Haran, in which she will perform songs from her upcoming album "Lullabies and Wildflowers," to be released Mother's Day 2008 on the Velour/Universal Records label Her new Birdland concert additionally will feature classics and standards from songwriters including Judy Collins, Gershwin, Sammy Kahn, her brother Mike Errico, and, exclusively this evening, a special emphasis on the legendary Irving Berlin. I saw Melissa9s last show at Birdland and it was wonderful. What a great tribute to Judy to be so acclaimed for her songwriting. Jerry P.S. The one of his albums I listened to ALOT was 1985's "High Country Snow". I really enjoyed that. Not that much good acoustic stuff happening from the 70's people in '85. A new wave of acoustic performers was coming through, but at the time, for me, it was REAL good to hear a great new album from one of the people I associated with the good 70's acoustic stuff. My favorite DF hands-down is "Netherlands" - just a beautiful record, and the title track is exhibit A of how to perfectly integrate an orchestra into a pop/rock song. "Captured Angel" is my next favorite, an overlooked gem that I like from start to finish, and of course the one that put him on the map, Souvenirs. That was quite a hat trick. His duet with Joni, "Nexus" was also one of my favorite tracks of his. I remember getting that double LP for Christmas and Nexus was song 1, side 1. I think it's as close to a favorite as I have. So close that 16 years ago I named my daughter Amelia in an attempt to claim the muse. I like to think she got some. We never told her what prompted the selection of the name, until she figured it out when we were in the car listening while driving. She remarked how totally hopeless and embarassing it was to be named after a Joni Mitchell song. I answered that someday when a stranger meets her, learns her name and remarks with the answer phrase "it was just a false alarm", she will beam at the connection and marvel in its focus. I made Amelia promise to call me when that happens. I know that the holiday season always brings at least one radio airing of "Same Auld Lang Syne" to my ears, which prompts me to spin at least one Fogelberg album and play "Netherlands" and "Paris Nocturne" on the piano. His was the music of my adolescence. "Home Free" was the intimate soundtrack of my early courtship with my wife and still rewards with quality songwriting and musicianship. Fogelberg's contributions to early Jackson Browne and Eagles tracks often go uncredited. His early career path borrowed many a page from Joni's book, including classically influenced pop writing and use of his artwork for several of his albums. Take special notice of the similarity of covers of "Blue" and "Netherlands", each the fourth studio album from both artists. The gatefold of that record also features a self portrait that is conceptually reminiscent of the "Ladies of the Canyon" cover. Of course, Fogelberg is one of the few artists for which Joni deigned a guest appearance on his "Nexus." I knew the day would come when I would say I missed Dan Fogelberg, but I mourn none the less. Nexus was included on Volume 1 and has since been replaced. Pretty funny to think about that now as there are PLENTY of Joni covers to fill up many many many CD's - Volume 96 coming up in 2 weeks. I loved a lot of his music and didn't like a fair amount of it too. I've talked before on the list about the stunning song he did called Tucson, Arizona on his Windows & Walls album. I've reproduced the lyrics below and together with the music it stopped me in my tracks the first time I heard it. Talk about going OCD on a song . (you'd think reading lyrics like this I could handle the nightly news .) It is on iTunes. Lindsay Tucson, Arizona, by Dan Fogelberg Tucson, Arizona Rising in the heat like a Mirage Tony keeps his Chevy Like a virgin locked in His garage He brings it out at midnight And cruises down the Empty boulevards And he prowls the Darkened alleys That snake between the city's Thirsty yards The lonely desert skies reflect The anger in his eyes And it is dawn. His father died of drinking And left five children sinking With his mom His older brother Bobby Never made it back from Vietnam With high school well behind him He lives at home and works this Shitty job. And he thinks his 60 Chevy Is the only true amigo That he's got His heart is filled with sadness And his soul is like some Ugly vacant lot. Mary Estelle Hannah Came out from Louisiana For the sun A deal gone bad in Dallas Left her burned and broke And on the run To make the rent and groceries She takes this job at $3.15 an hour Serving shots of whiskey And tequila In some smoky red-neck bar And she dreams some day She'll make her way to L.A. And become a movie star. Tony saw her working He swallowed hard and asked Her for a date Mary laughed and answered "I would but every night I'm working late" He said he had some cocaine That she could have if she'd Just ride along She said "What the hell, I may as well. I haven't had no fun in So damn long" He picked her up at closing time They pulled out on the road And they were gone. Tony's mom got frantic When she found her son had Not come home Mary's roommate panicked And called the sheriff from A public phone They asked her lots of questions She tried her best to tell Them what she saw. And late that night They found poor Mary Lying in some narrow, Dusty draw And the coroner reported That she hadn't been deceased for very long. Two weeks on they found it Buried to the windshield In the sand There inside lay Tony With a small revolver in His hand The papers simply stated It must have been the Drugs that drove him mad The neighbors speculated What could make a good boy Go so bad? Well, it might have been The desert heat It might have been the Home he never had. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 18 Dec 2007 02:48:01 +0000 From: Patti Parlette Subject: njc, TV ALERT Graham Nash is on Larry King (CNN) this hour (telephone interview?), and Joe Walsh...talking about Dan Fogelberg... xo, pp at 9:30 p.m EST _________________________________________________________________ The best games are on Xbox 360.
