Anyway, I do understand what others have said in relation to the synths but beginning to step back a bit and see the bigger picture. Like an Impressionist painting...I think some of the dots are a bit sloppy but from a distance the whole is uniquely Joni. I like to listen to it from the title track onwards. Myself, I also find the compositions on Shine to be well well below par for JM. The harmony is "blocky" and lacks counterpoint, the chords are square and totally predictable (unlike Joni's almost entire body of work), and then there is the mix, in which Joni's voice is marginalized so as to feature the fake saxophones, guitars and bassoons. I decided to get my Mom "Shine" (She's not as into Joni as your Mom is, Em). I played it for her over Thanksgiving and she said: "I like your Joni! That's pretty." Now, my brothers would say I'm only thinking of what *I* like and pushing Joni all the time (If you can bear to hear The truth you've spoken Twisted and misconstrued By some smug fool), so here's the on-line gift message I sent with it, as is (pardon all the schmushed-upness and "u"s and all....I had 250 spaces to fill in (TIC: an empty space to filllll innnnn): "Hi Mama!I wouldn't force this on u,but u said you liked it,so voila. After u,Joni has been the most influential woman in my life.U both taught me"the deeper meaning".My little light shines, becuz of u 2. U'll love "Hana"-she's like your Mindy!XO,Patti" 2. My son sent me his new wife's wish list, and one item on there was: "Gift card to Hannahs". Ha! They may spell the name wrong, but I will get her a gift card from Hannahs. (NPIMH: Hana!) Ha! And when she opens it, I will have another opportunity to talk about Joni and Hana! (Maybe my brothers are right....LOL!) 3. My friend Judy called last night to tell me that she was talking to a co-worker about how hard it is to buy gifts for teenagers. Ellen said: "I like to buy them CDs of timeless music, like Joni Mitchell and..." Judy just had to call and tell me immediately! She couldn't remember the other names (we were guessing: Beatles, Dylan, JT, CK, etc., but Judy said it wasn't any of them. She will ask her today. How cool (TIC: play it cool, play it cool) that only Joni stuck in her mind!) 4. My high school friend Debbie (she went to Florida) doesn't have "Shine" yet (I'm surprised at her!) so I ordered that for her, along with the WOHAM DVD. She always loved Joni but she's gotten a little off track (I have a special knack for getting people back on the right Joni track, settling them down into the clickety-clack.) I guess I was off the track myself for a little bit in the 80s because Debbie recently wrote me this, to my shock and horror: "Anyway, I was looking in a box of old letters, cards, etc. -- special ones I saved -- a lot from you of course -- and one letter was typewritten in 1988 and begins with "Thanks so much for the Joni article! I haven't read about her in years -- I never even knew that she was married!" "Funny" now, how I was OCD with her then and (well, I still am) and now YOU are! Huh?" LOL.....oui, juste un tout petit peu JMOCDed these days. Have a holly jolly Joni Christmas! Or whatever you celebrate. The one thing we can all celebrate together is how "the gift goes on." Yeah! I really don't mind about the sonics on it, it's the composition. I keep on hearing other things in it that make me stop and listen. REALLY listen. I'm not saying that you haven't done but I guess I'm hearing what it would've/could've sounded like with the full orchestra/band and I'm loving the arrangements. To me Shine is both a departure and a culmination of her career. It's that step back into the so-called limelight to say that she's here, she has something to say, let it's subtle beauty wash over you. yes, I think she was limited by the machine she was using, it'd be great if she could do a 'Shine - Live' album, but she probably wanted to get things done for the ballet (she wanted more songs for the ballet but didn't get them done on time - I wonder if the next show will include them?) and really I guess she thought, as Sting has once said,'There's no such thing as perfection, you just run out of time' or words to that effect. You're exactly right, Michael - she talks the talk but doesn't walk the walk. She disses the critics & the business, and then gets pissed when she doesn't get her due. She disses the R&R hall of fame, then gets pissed when she gets in later than she thinks she should have. She says she doesn't want to be popular and then complains when she doesn't move a lot of units. Either it matters or it doesn't y'know? She could take some pointers from Dylan in those categories - you've proven everything you need to prove, just do what you like and don't worry about the critical/popular/fan/whatever fallout. I'm trying to be optimistic, but were it not for the fact that "One Week Last Summer" is competing in a very slim category I'd say that her chances in winning were very small. The past history of Grammy voting abuse is all about proxy based on sales. Each record company gets a certain number of ballots based on their sales. Most ballots are completed from the desks of record company administrative assistants who are instructed to vote the company line. They know who butters their bread. That's why a split vote sneak in winner almost never happens. So unless she's got some major working mojo, there might need to be a category for "Best Pop Instrumental Written On A Spinet Over The Course Of A Single Week In A Rustic Retreat Near Vancouver" in order for Joni to get hers this year. I would so love to be proven wrong. Several times a year, people in the U.S. call the police and actually complain to them that someone stole their " #@%*." They almost always end up getting arrested themselves. Is it Joni's best work? Well, beauty is in the eye of the beholder (or the ears as in this case) but I'd say no to these ears. But then again I'm not trying to compare Shine to anything before just as I don't think you should compare Blue to Mingus or For The Roses to Song To A Seagull. Every Joni album is its own entity and I think that is key. If you compare it to your favorite album, surely it won't hold up because we all have our own favorites! But I can say I really do enjoy Shine and am so thankful that Joni wrote a new album. It's something new but it has remnants of past works or more or less glimpses or...perhaps influences from other works. I still particularly enjoy "Shine" and "If" the most. Just brilliant if you ask me. I still don't care for Hana. That's just my opinion and I know yours is different just as the next person's is. Funny how different we all are as human beings and how we hear the same thing yet it's completely different to each of us individually! As for all the synth parts, well it's just Joni being Joni. She tried something different as she always does, and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. Whether it works or not is a matter of opinion. But that's Joni...she's always doing her own thing no matter what. I admire her for that. -Monika, who loves Joni's comment on the businessmen who run the labels that they only "love golf and porno." You probably don't have time to go to my second favorite website (http://www.imaginepeace.com/) (after jonimitchell.com, of course!) so I hope you don't mind the bandwith as I share a message that, imo, is beautiful. Love & Bed Peace, Patti P. December 12, 2007 Dear Friends, Around the world, December 8th was a day of remembrance for John Lennon. In Reykjavik, I heard that the December 8th remembrance ceremony at the IMAGINE PEACE TOWER on Videy Island went beautifully. The ferry had special trips until 11pm and several hundred people went on Videy into the night. In New York City, thousands of people gathered on December 8th, at Strawberry Fields in Central Park, throughout the day and night to celebrate and remember John. I was in Tokyo on December 8th, participating in the annual Dream Power tribute concert for John at the historical Budokan, the concert hall where the Beatles did their concert many years ago. Every year I travel to Japan to be at the Dream Power celebration. This is the seventh year of this particular charity concert, DREAM POWER, which raises money to build schools in Africa and Asia for children in desperate need. We have already built 65 schools. We hope to reach 100 by the tenth year, 2010. Eleven thousand people attended DREAM POWER, flashing the ONOCHORD message, i ii iii (I Love You) to each other. It was really hot, hot, hot! And I'm not speaking of the weather! I, also, deeply appreciate all of your messages of care and love to me on that painful day. There were many; all of them were very thoughtful and kind, clearly trying to help me feel better, even though you were going through your own pain too. Thank you so much. I feel strongly that we are family. After the concert in Japan, I rushed back home to New York, so I could start taking care of the holiday preparations for my family. We celebrate the holidays, more or less in the way we have done since John and I've made N.Y. our home. Sean comes home, every year, from wherever he is, to decorate the xmas tree in the kitchen, as he always has. He is making his mother very happy by doing so, and he knows it! So for the holidays, be busy. Have fun. And remember to be kind and giving - to yourself first. For you are beautiful, and we love you. We shall speak again after the New Year. Let's hope it's a good one without any fear. With love, yoko REVELATIONS Bless you for your anger Its a sign of rising energy. (Transform the energy to versatility and it will bring you prosperity).
