It was my idea to do a high quality recording of the ocean waves, and give cassette copies to people as Christmas gifts (which is what I did). We camped on the beach that night, and when I returned to my home town and stopped at the little organic food co-op the chalkboard said "John Lennon. May your rising spirit find relief". I asked the person in line what that might mean, she said, "Oh, haven't you heard?" Of course it was unbelievable at first. When I got back to my remote mountain cabin, because I had no TV, I channel-surfed the AM band with a little transister radio, recording the stunned announcers, the grief on the street, the endless stream of Beatles and John Lennon songs from all over the country. At last, I cried. I don't remember what day it was, but I wrote a song with snippets from John songs. The last line was "May your rising spirit find relief". RR ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 8 Dec 2007 10:11:41 -0800 (PST) From: Monika Bogdanowicz Subject: Grammy nominations, now folks hate I think it's just because there are those who "know" Joni as a folk singer from the 60's which really doesn't give you a good idea about the variety of her music. There's nothing wrong with folk per se but Joni often gets lumped into the folk category and often only that folk category. In a way it is very limiting to her as an artist and very, very misleading as Joni has a wide variety of music that can't really be said it's this or it's that. Don't box her in! She doesn't want that! She has said that she was only a folk singer up to 1965 and really that's pretty accurate. Now her very early albums, I will say, have some "folky" qualities to them but they are far from folk. If you ever listen to some "pure folk" as I call it, Joni's nothing like it. If you want to hear Joni playing folk music, check out a '65 performance of hers on...a Canadian show (I forget the name) which is on YouTube. Now those are some nice, folk covers. But even from the beginning, Joni's music was much too advance to really be considered folk. Folk is kind of simple in a way and Joni's music has always been more technical I suppose. -Monika - --------------------------------- Be a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all with Yahoo! So i assumed the line just meant that Joni was bringing home her reel-to-reel tape(s) to review at home on her machine. I have a couple of huge boxes of reel-to-reel tapes from old recording sessions and since I've only been through a few of the reels to transfer songs to cassette or CD, Lord only knows what are on those things! It's enlightening to know they were each other's bitches. I'm sure they had one very interesting relationship. :) -Monika Happy The Man wrote: Just watching the DVD portion of James new CD and during the introduction of "You've Got A Friend" he says Joni was what you would call now a days "My Bitch". (I have to confess, the very first reason i bought that CD was because the store offered a discount for that old CD). Touched by the album (it was so raw, pure, touching, provocative, and beautiful), i tried to add another John Lennon records to my catalogue. So far : Mind Games, Imagine, Double Fantasy, and a compilation album of his works. (I love Double Fantasy). I also add some Yoko Ono. I love her song Why, John, John, Let's Hope For Peace December 8th 2005, I spent my few minutes to remember him, just like million others. December 8th 2006 I put an album cover of his Unfinished Music : Two Virgins on my desktop wallpaper. My friends thought i was nuts. December 8th 2007 I should have said "Happy Birthday Marion!" (It's already December 9th here, and so is in Sweden) Rian NP. John Lennon - Love, from Plastic Ono Band IMO, this song plus Joni's Love, describe 'love' best. - --------------------------------- Looking for last minute shopping deals? Find them fast with Yahoo! Your birthday may be a good thing after all. It's a day for everyone to think about love and peace. It's 11:08 p.m. here in CT, and I am ready to go outside to shine my ONOCHORD flashlight in the dazzling darkness, beaming peace all "across the universe". People, can you feel it? And it's one, two, three, what are we shining for? Peace! This station is mostly an NPR news and jazz station, but Saturday nights have a "pretty much whatever the DJ wants to play in the realm of popular music" segment, which is usually quite interesting. They've played Joni before, and played stuff from Herbie's 'River' during the jazz programs recently, but this is the first time I've heard anything from Shine, not being a very regular listener to this program. After the song finished, the DJ commented a little on Joni, mentioning her previous determination not to record again and saying how fortunate we all are to have her back. He also said that he really liked Shine, which is about as much of a recommendation as you can get on the radio. This was in the middle of a tribute to John Lennon tonight, playing the Beatles, his solo work, and covers - a few every hour, with a lot of other, mostly good stuff. Also several songs from Chrome Dreams II - nice to hear a little Neil as well. Pretty good music for a Saturday night with a tree to decorate and a cat for company. And I was soooo happy to hear "If"!!! RIP John Lennon - Peace to all, Thea NP: Been on a Train, Laura Nyro (not the radio anymore, but my turntable) ------------------------------ End of JMDL Digest V2007 #493 ***************************** ------- Post messages to the list by clicking here: mailto:joni@smoe.org Unsubscribe by clicking here: mailto:joni-digest-request@smoe.org?body=unsubscribe -------
