I saw this story recently and it cracked me up. It takes political correctness to a new extreme. http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,311797,00.html Australian Santas Asked Not to 'Ho Ho Ho' Thursday, November 15, 2007 By Janet Fyfe-Yeomans and Amanda Grant SYDNEY, Australia He is an unlikely revolutionary, but this Christmas, Santa is a rebel with a claus. He is having the last laugh on political correctness and it's a great big fat belly laugh. Santas across Sydney, Australia, are rebelling against attempts to ban their traditional greeting of "ho, ho, ho" in favor of "ha, ha, ha." Recruitment firm Westaff which supplies hundreds of Santas across the country has told its trainees that the "ho ho ho" phrase could frighten children and could even be derogatory to women. Two Santa hopefuls reportedly quit the course because of the hullabaloo of the ho, ho, ho. One would-be Santa has told The Daily Telegraph he was taught not to use "ho, ho, ho" because it was too close to the American slang for prostitute. He also quit. "Gimme a break," said Julie Gale, who runs a campaign against sexualizing children called Kids Free 2B Kids. "We are talking about little kids who do not understand that 'ho, ho, ho' has any other connotation, and nor should they." "Leave Santa alone," she added. Australian Childhood Foundation chief executive officer Dr. Joe Tucci said it was the latest example of political correctness gone mad. "There is no stronger tradition for children than Santa's ho, ho, ho," Tucci said. On Wednesday, Australian department-store chains David Jones and Myer as well as the Westfield shopping center chain moved to reassure children, and their parents, that Santa and his customary greeting was part of Christmas's present as well as Christmas's past. A David Jones spokeswoman said they had discussed the situation with Westaff and that their Santas would not be silenced. "Senior management have assured us that Santas provided to David Jones have not been censored in any way," the spokeswoman said. At Myer, where Westaff also train the fat men in red suits, Santa could not stop laughing about the suggestion. "Myer has not directed our Santas to refrain from using 'ho, ho, ho' and believe the expression is an important Christmas tradition," a spokesman for Myer said. Westfield's Santas are recruited and trained by RegProm Marketing and they will be "ho, ho, ho-ing," a Westfield spokeswoman said. "Westfield Santas are known for their friendly and welcoming nature and know how to deliver a real festive 'ho, ho, ho.'" Sydney mother Maybel Lopez said she wanted her daughter Andria, 5, to grow up hearing Santa's "ho, ho, ho" just as she had, and she did not realize the phrase had other connotations. "It's what Santa has been saying his whole life my whole life. It is just a normal thing, really, for him to say 'ho, ho, ho,'" said Lopez. Westaff's national Santa co-ordinator Sari Hegarty wrote to stores explaining the company's position. "Westaff has been a provider of quality caring Santas for over 40 years," Hegarty wrote in an e-mail. "Part of our advice to our Santas is that they should be mindful of children having their first Santa experience," she added. "We ask our Santas to try techniques such as lowering their tone of voice and using 'ha, ha, ha' to encourage the children to come forward and meet Santa. We wish you and your family a very merry Christmas." Westaff national operations manager Greg Jansz said it was "misleading" to say the company had banned Santa's traditional greeting and it was being left up to the discretion of Santa himself. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 4 Dec 2007 08:59:55 -0500 From: Bob.Muller@Fluor.com Subject: Re : Christmas Tree, Indonesian style NJC When I was 4-5 years old I lived much closer to you Rian, on Kwajalein in the Marshall Islands. Here I am up all night in the studios again when I really should be getting some bed peace in the dazzling darkness, but I have to share this "love is a story told" before I forget. My son Michael from Mountains (yes, he was named after the song, and you know I'm not kidding!) was in town buying his new tires (so he doesn't dream flat ones) and I had the good fortune to pick him up and take him out to a Barangrill for dinner. I was excited because he would be a captive audience on the carousel of time, traveling in my vehicle, and I could play some Shine for him. Ha! I was shining as I reeled him in. Now I've told you how my sons are terrible Joni teasers, so be prepared. It was a tough choice, but I decided to play "If" first. As tires come squealing I said: Hi honey! Hop in! You are in for a treat. Here is Joni's new album! M (smiling, but being sarcastic): I'm soooo excited, Mom! Me: You must listen to the words. She is so inspiring. (I make you welcome in: If you can keep your head While all about you People are losing theirs and blaming you If you can trust yourself When everybody doubts you And make allowance for their doubting too....) (I thought these would be good words for a 23 year-old.) M: That's not Joni! Me: What do you mean? M: That's a man's voice! Me: No sir! That's Joni! You just expect that helium voice. You need to learn more about Joni. M: Is she going to tour now? Me: No, we don't think so. She wants to do more ballets. M: We? Me: Yeah, you know. The JMDL. M: Oh, okay Mom! I really wanted him to just listen to the music (sweet music) but of course we started talking and catching up on stuff on the way to the Barangrill. Dinner was lovely and so was the Conversation. (This boy is doing me proud -- tears and fears and feeling proud -- counseling troubled youths and teaching them about racism and justice and so many other important things.) On the way back to the tire store, we listened to more Shine. I was thinking I should take a long detour so he could hear the whole thing, while I was anxiously changing tracks. What did I want him to hear the most? The whole thing! I know he knows BYT, even though he won't admit it (his girlfriend told me that while at a pool party One Week Last Summer Joni came on and he sang ALL the words, and he also did that with "Help Me"), so I played BYT. I was torn between wanting to hear his stories and wanting him to hear Joni. Then while Night of the Iguana came on I was singing and pulled onto the wrong exit! (At least it wasn't a dangerous merge like you pulled, Marian, between the fine white lines of the free freeway!) He had just been asking me when I might retire and said: "Retire? I never think about that. I love my job. Are you saying I look old? I may be only fifty-three, but I am SWINGING!" M: MOM! Where are you going? (as I'm singing and pleading: Mike! You have to LISTEN TO THIS! Listen to the way she sings: "The jasmine is so mercilesssssssssly SWEEEEEEEEET") Me: Huh? Where are we? M: You took the wrong exit! For a few seconds, I really did not know where I was. I was totally DUI-JM. I know the refuge of these roads like the back of my hand. Then I took another turn, and again he said: MOM! WHERE are you GOING? (We were pulling into the mall, where the Shaboo Inn used to be, totally off-course. Again, for a few seconds, I was totally disoriented and ooby-shooby, but then I got back on the clickety clack.) Me: Sorry, hon. Wow. For a minute I thought I was getting Alzheimers, and that maybe I really should think of retiring. But now I know what it is. It's just a little DUI-JM episode." M: A *what*? So I tried to explain. I think he got it. Or maybe not. Maybe he is calling his older brother tonight and saying: "Chris, I'm pretty worried about Mom. It may be time to put her in a home for aging children. She's in Flip City!" Nah. Everything's cool. Thanks for all the space and I hope I made sense with the tombs/toothpicks in my eyes and the songs that I punched were dreaming! In fact, if it was possible, I wish I could just skip Christmas all together. Normally I love the time around the holidays--the lights, the decorations, etc etc (NOT the snow). Every year my sister, brother, and I buy each other presents ourselves. This year I am forfeiting all my gifts in exchange for $$ to put away as part of a Jonifest fund. I figure I don't really need anything as most everything I want I already have or will purchase myself in the near future. You know? So what is everyone doing for Xmas this year? I actually volunteered to work Christmas morning at the station I work for (6AM-Noon) as the full time people get time off. After that, I'll be at home with my brother and sister probably eating the dinner my brother cooks. Oh, I also plan to drop off gifts for my Uncle that we buy as he doesn't have a car right now due to some recent problems so he can't come to us. That will be my Xmas. Thanks, Cassy. Here's something from the Luminato website. Note that the Nov 30 date is the date of the press release, not the performance. Luminato 2008 is June 6-15. http://www.luminato.com/news.php?item=6 Nov. 19 2007"a great artist has inspired greatness in her fellow artists. The Calgary Sun Luminato 2008 is proud to present the Toronto premiere of the Alberta Ballets The Fiddle and the Drum, a contemporary dance work inspired by the music of Joni Mitchell and choreographed by Alberta Ballets Artistic Director Jean Grand-Mantre. Presented in partnership with The National Ballet of Canada, The Fiddle and the Drum will be mounted for 10 performances at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts. The Fiddle and the Drum, a semi-abstract narrative ballet danced in neo-classical style, is performed to an hour of Mitchells compelling music and her latest artworks, which are projected on three large canvas screens behind the dancers throughout the ballet. Alberta Ballets 26 dancers merge through powerful and sensual movements with Joni Mitchells eclectic sound and visual art and create a contemporary fusion of art forms that awaken and stir the soul. The piece also speaks volumes about Joni Mitchells life-long concerns about environmental neglect and the warring nature of mankind. As an artist creating today, quite frankly, I can see no other subject matter that is of more importance now. We need people to awaken to this reality, says Ms. Mitchell. The Fiddle and the Drum will be performed in a program that includes Harald Landers virtuoso piece Etudes and William Forsythes provocative the second detail. They are more recent but really capture that same feeling that is on those first two. Decade is great a compilation....it was the first recording I ever heard of Neil and is what largely got me into him originally; a nice retrospective of songs he recorded with the Buffalo Springfield and early Neil Young solo career. "Harvest Moon" and "Freedom" I would recommend as well, two great releases from the 90's. He has such a vast catalog it's hard to go wrong. > And which album should i skip?
