My g-d this precious gem has been in my CD player every day for the past five years and I am still completely blown away by it to this day. Slouching Towards Bethlehem, Judgement Of The Moon And Stars and Job's Sad Song far transcend the original recordings IMHO. So do The Dawntreader and The Last Time I Saw Richard. One thing I have noticed while aging is how people get stuck in the past. What keeps us young is our ability to embrace newness. This is why Joni is Sooooo timeless!!! T'log is pathetically underrated today but in the future (if we dumb humans somehow survive our ignorant arrogance) T'log will be playing on some deserted island when all but a few of us are long gone..... & the same applies to DED & CMIARS Am I the only one to realize that Joni can do no wrong? (besides perhaps Twisted) BTW, SHINE is by far her best album so far. She keeps me going when everything else just makes me want to quit trying and simply give up. Is it because people prefer lyrics like 'He picks up my scent on his fingers while he's watching the waitresses' legs' more than 'Land of short attention spans / nothing is savored long enough to really understand.'? I adore Joni for her music first, her art second and her poetry third. but i just have to say again that she is outshining Beethoven & O'Keefe & Whitman with her complete genius! I was at a music store @ Taman Anggrek Mall, in Jakarta. I asked to the shopkeeper with the sound of a pessimist "Do you have ANY Joni Mitchell CDs?". Then she looked at her computer. "Out of stock, Sir". I didn't believe it. I forced to look at her computer screen. It was not out of stock! I found Travelogue : stock 1. I snapped her "There is one. Are you not going to sell the CD to me or what??" Then I began to search it on the shelves. I looked at the section of artists whose name begin with J. I didn't find it. Then I looked on M. I didn't find it. On the oldies section. Didn't find it. Desperate. I complained the shopkeeper. She said that its probably caused by a buyer who was going to buy the CD but changed his mind and did not return the CD to the original shelf. This is crazy. It was a huge music store. I felt like i was going to cry. You know, I was just a few meters away from my Travelogue, but i don't know where the hell that CD was. I just cant imagine myself trying to find that CD somewhere in this huge store. But i did. I searched it one by one, CD by CD. The shopkeeper must have thought i was nut. Loved their toothy smiles. I scanned the article for pictures and quick-read the inset texts and it looks like the article tries to contextualize the collaboratiion between Joni and Herbie - from Joni's early albums and conceptual musical landscapes and how Herbie was drawn to it. The review also touched on Herbie's own Joni tribute album and name-checks Tina Turner and Luciana Souza as giving very good readings of Joni's songs. The other Joni reference I (thought I) heard this week was, strangely enough, in a moviehouse. While waiting for Sidney Lumet's "Before the Devil Knows You're Dead" (very well executed, directed, acted and paced) to start, the trailers and previews for upcoming movies were on the big screen. In the indie film "Starting Out in the Evening" (the one with Frank Langella and Lili Taylor), I thought I heard one character say Joni's name in reference to great writers. The movie (based on the short preview) is based on the relationship between an aging professor and a grad student. In that one brief scene, the student excitedly told the prof about being a great writer and she mentioned big names in the literary world and squeezed Joni's name in the middle. Should be a fun film to watch, yes? Joseph in N.C. np: Bela Kartoli - Invertebrate - --------------------------------- Ne gardez plus qu'une seule adresse mail ! Copiez vos mails vers Yahoo! But as mentioned, when I heard the Travelogue version of FTR I got very interested in hearing the rest of the album. This is Joni interpreting her life's work and the way she does it certainly tells a lot about her choices, musically and otherwise - or am I wrong? The sequoias in California, both the northern redwoods and the Giant Sequoias fill me with awe. In terms of survival and longevity, they have it all over humans on the evolutionary scale. We have a couple of giant sequoias and 1 metasequoia (Dawn Redwood) planted in our yard. But I love putting up a real Christmas tree. It's something from childhood that I just can't let go of. I love the smell, I love the lights, I love the shiny ornaments and the gold star on the top. I'm with Victor on this one. The trees are grown specifically for this purpose and replenished. I liked Victor's analogy to cut flowers. > > I've done my best to turn off the "Christmas Machine" as much as I > possibly can and enjoy the things about the holiday that I do like, > visiting family & friends and some simple gift exchanges. Love Christmas cds by Maddy Prior, Joan Baez, Linda Rondstadt, Julie Andrews, Emmylou Harris and, yes, Babs. I also put up Christmas lights on the house. Thanksgiving weekend was dry and sunny this year so I managed to get them all up. I love the idea of people putting lights on their houses at the darkest part of the year. It helps brighten things up considerably for me. > > I have to laugh at the gullible public that keeps getting sucked > into the thing such that now they will actually go to stores that > open at 1AM the day after Thanksgiving, spending money they don't > have on things they don't need. My siblings and I agreed several years ago to stop buying Xmas gifts for one another. Once both of my folks had passed away, I pretty much gave up Christmas shopping. It's a great relief and really eases the stress. I do send Christmas cards. With some people, it's the one time of the year that we communicate with one another. Sad, but true. Not everyone is going to love every single thing that Joni or another artist puts out. That does not make you or anyone else any less of a fan. But in Joni's case, I still maintain that she has never released a shoddily made or bad record. That has inspired a trust in me and a respect for her work that makes me always give her the benefit of the doubt. I can't listen to a new Joni Mitchell cd once or twice or even three times and pass judgment on it. If there's a particular track that doesn't resonate with me at first, repeated listenings over time almost always reveal something to me that leads me to an appreciation of the song on some level. I think I got some people's hackles up back when 'Travelogue' was released by expressing an opinion similar to Eric's. At the time, I felt that it was not reasonable to make a critical judgment of 'Travelogue' based on only one or a few listens. So many of Joni's records have taken time for me to fully absorb and assimilate them. I am still discovering things about records I have had for decades. 'Travelogue' is 2 cds worth of Joni working in a context that was almost entirely new to her when she made it. There is a lot to hear and absorb. If there is a certain period of Joni's work that you particularly love, 'Travelogue' might not grab you. It might cause some people to dismiss it without giving it a chance. And if the original take of one or more of those songs is a favorite of yours, maybe you just don't want to hear it in an new context. But it has been a few years since it was released. I guess most people have had enough time to make up their minds about it by now. I confess, I have not listened to 'Travelogue' as much as some of Joni's other records. For me, it requires a certain mindset and attention level that is difficult for me to devote to it. I do think some of the songs work better than others. Unlike Rian, I love 'You Dream Flat Tires', 'God Must Be a Boogie Man' and 'Be Cool'. I was baffled at first by the retooling of 'For the Roses' but after a few listens, a concept took shape in my mind and now I think it is a wonderful, new, atmospheric take on the song. 'The Dawntreader' is just beautiful - pure genius. 'Woodstock' adds a nostalgic, historic dimension to that song. 'Judgment of the Moon and Stars' is a wonderful fleshing out of her original composition. I like the fact that she added the male chorus to 'Sire of Sorrow'. I always felt it should be there. That being said, there are one or two of Joni's albums that I loved almost from the first listen. 'Court and Spark' was my first Joni. It blew me away almost immediately and still does. 'Taming the Tiger' and 'Night Ride Home' are 2 other Joni cds that I loved right away. TTT makes it into a lot of people's 'skip' list, I noticed. I think it is beautiful and elegant in its way. On the other hand, 'Hejira' and 'DJRD' took years for me to fully appreciate their genius. Not that I didn't like them. They just didn't grab me right away. Even 'Blue' was not a record I immediately fell in love with. I liked the MOA versions of some of those songs better than 'Blue' for a long time, mostly because Joni's voice didn't seem so 'helium-like' on MOA. We all have our own opinions. We all like some things better than others. Viva la difference! Well, besides F&D and BYT, Joni did not write anything topical or anti-war during the Vietnam era, not until the '80's. > Is it because people prefer lyrics like 'He picks up my scent on his > fingers while he's watching the waitresses' legs' more than 'Land of short > attention spans / nothing is savored long enough to really understand.'? It's because music was better in the former, and the production was worse in the latter. Glad to hear you had good reception. Please send me your snailmail address off-list and I will send you a little something for your collection. I love spreading the gospel of John and Joni! I'm thinking of starting a new church where they light the candles based on the question: WWJ&JD? (I'm only half kidding. Imagine!) John and Joni. Now THERE are some Latter Day Saints. (Tee hee....laughing it all away....sorry....I just spent a week in Utah where there are LDS stakes on every corner.) Here is lots more cool John Lennon stuff: http://imaginepeace.com There was an art exhibit in Kansas City recently, and lots of other events going on (look on the right) to color up your sunshine hours or to make you shine in the dazzling darkness. Make sure to click on "Imagine Peace" up top and you will see all kinds of photographs and quotes and lyrics and drawings. A treasure trove of sweet inspiration. I keep meaning to buy a poster board and write (in my finest hand, of course) "Bed Peace". Maybe I'll do that this week, on the 27th anniversary of....merde, I can't even say it. That hard day's night in a deep and dark December. Sherelle ma belle, I'm thinking of you, Strawberry Fields Sister, so I will cc you. One of my favorite memories of the Carnegie Hall tribute was the morning after, standing on a noisy corner gazing up in awe at the Dakota with you, and then standing on the Imagine mosaic, arm in arm, amid the strewn (for the) rose(s) petals. And, of course, dragging around your baggage on the carousel of time. I hope by now you have a suitcase with wheels! ; ) L'amour et la paix, Patti P. "It's our responsibility what happens around the world. It's our responsibility for Vietnam, and all the other wars that we don't quite hear about. It's all our responsibility, and when we all want peace we'll get it. People have said we're naive for trying to sell peace like a car, or bar of soap. But I ask ya, is the Ford company naive...or the soap powder company? They're selling the same old soap that's been around for two thousand years, but now it's 'New Blue Soap.' Well, we're selling 'New Blue Peace!' ...and we hope some of you buy it!"" - -- John Lennon, 1969 Yeah, buy some "New Blue Peace!" Don't let it sit up in a loft somewhere! There's just so many things to do, if I was to try and do it all I would stress out beyond belief - so I just pick things from the Christmas menu and forget the rest. What's fun with the tree thing is putting up all the ornaments that were milestones in my son's life "Baby's 1st Christmas" and all that, including some that he made when he was a kid. And you're right about the smell, to me it is THE Christmas smell. I certainly would not have any interest in putting up a fake one. I guess in France they do more than kiss on Main Street these days. Voila (from Larry Habegger's "World Travel Watch"): "France: Crime around the Champs-Elysies, perhaps the world's most famous avenue, has increased dramatically in recent years. A Nov. 26 report by France's National Crime Observatory showed incidents in the eighth arrondissement, the district including the Champs-Elysies, increased in many categories in 2006. Personal assaults were up 32 percent, cases of violence without theft were up 93 percent and reports of threatening behavior were up almost 49 percent." The antennae she told us and Travis Smiley about would be up and she'd be yelling: "Thief! Thief! Hell is not the hippest way to go!" And if JT finally does go down to Mexico, he'd better be careful, too: "Mexico: The routes to popular but remote surfing spots in northern Baja California were the sites for at least six armed robberies in the past five months, numbers that authorities feel may be low because they believe many incidents go unreported. Camping in remote areas is risky. Longtime travelers to the area recommend staying only in campgrounds that have security guards and traveling in convoys of at least two but as many vehicles as possible." If you're traveling in some vehicle, I guess two are better than one. And it seems safer to camp in someone's kitchen than in a remote area. I guess I won't have wanderlust on my pillows tonight! Those of us who do not care for it stated our views pretty clearly back in '02, and sad to say that it hasn't gotten any better with age. When it comes to Travelogue, Bob generally speaks for me as well, and I agree with everything he said. I'll just add for myself that I find the strings to be very uninteresting. Further, while these albums may be new for JONI, there's nothing new going on musically (in terms of innovation) in the larger sense, so it's not a matter of those of us who dislike this album not wanting to go in new directions. Indeed, my main criticism of Shine (which I like, but don't love) is that it didn't move far enough away from TtT.
