My money money money won't make the trees come down! I've got the urge for going over to this tree museum at lunchtime to buy me some trees in honor of Joni and Ms. Treegreen Marianne and the entire JMDL. I wonder if the decorated ones have little lights shining on them. I like to let the little lights shine. May all their little lights shine. I don't know if I should buy an Alberta (O, Canada!) spruce or a Colorado BLUE spruce. Which one is more Joni-esque? Hmmm. Both. Okay, I'll get two. Then instead of one tree, I'll have two. And you know two trees are better than one.<< Go with the Alberta Spruce, Patti! I have five of them planted in my yard which were live Christmas trees from years past and they are magnificent. They're surprisingly fast growers for such a perfect little tree. Evergreens are a better tree to plant to fight global warming because their leaves/needles continue to turn carbon into oxygen all winter. I love the story of the first Christmas trees. I believe it was Kris Kringle who decorated evergreens with nuts and fruits for the wildlife. The birds and critters feasting in the branches became the inspiration for ornaments. Too bad we have lost this beautiful tradition. Cutting down trees to celebrate the birth of Jesus is quite frankly antichrist! Jesus preached holy nature on the Mount of Olives and in the Garden of Gethsemine, proclaiming "the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations." That was so fun. And knowing the choices of other JMDLers is more fun. If I were Freud, I'd psycoanalyzed other JMDLers based on what they state on The Essentials list. Well, Laura's choice is so interesting. She put Blue and C&S on "Be Careful". Laura, can you tell us the reason? You know, most of us consider Blue and C&S gems. I really do recommend those albums. I once recommend them to my girlfriend (now an ex). She liked it. C&S (specially Help Me) coloured our relationship. We had a tumultuous kind of relationship. And when we broke up, she asked me to give her a song from the album Blue and a song from C&S. The songs were "Blue" and "Down To You". Oh my GOD! What have I DONE to her? "You're a brute-you're an angel You can crawl-you can fly too It's down to you It all comes down to you" Another story. Bob wrote this: I mean, what if your first Neil Young album was Trans? You'd be pretty dang hesitant to pick up anything else and then just think of what you'd miss. ++++ Yes. We should not let a first time Joni listener listen to Taming The Tiger & Mingus. TTT & Mingus are only for Joni intermediate or Joni expert (though The Dry Cleaner From Des Moines is suitable for Joni beginner) That's why I put LOTC on my recommended list. The songs from that album are easy to digest, beautiful, and spread like viruses. And it works. Now my sister (who hijacked my email account) hums The Circle Game every now and then. Rian NP. Interesting again! Somebody mentioned that he/she (I forget who, my mind isn't what it used to be) doesn't do compilations when it comes to Joni. I can understand that. I wouldn't recommend one to someone who wasn't into Joni either. With some artists and bands you can easily start off a "best of" album. With Joni (and a few others), I wouldn't suggest to anyone to do so. Her albums are units in a way. Of course they're units with fantastic pieces in them that certainly can be played separately (and thoroughly enjoyed) but the whole is what reels you in. Hi Terry, While I agree with you, I think the intent is that especially with an artist as explorative as Joni, if someone is really put off by jazz or synths or helium voices you would hate for them to miss something that is way different. Growing up I was very put off by Joni's upper register, it wasn't until C&S that I actually liked what I was hearing and then there was that Hejira thing when I dove in big-time. Anyway, I think that's the intent of a "Be Careful", that's the way I interpreted it. I mean, what if your first Neil Young album was Trans? You'd be pretty dang hesitant to pick up anything else and then just think of what you'd miss. James Taylor? Not so much, they're all pretty interchangeable and I don't mean that in a bad way. That was FUN!!!! It's amazing how fast Joni life can pass before your eyes! I can't imagine how different it must be to generate this list if you did not discover the bounty while it unfolded as Monika is doing. She is still discovering past treasures, but can't place them in sonic or social perspecive to compare their relevance against the work of contemporary artists or the general state of popular music when released. It's a very different perspective from which to consider the work. I'd wonder if there's a historic perspective grade to apply when viewing these ratings (not that one is more valid, but it might reveal generational differences). If we applied a percentage (100% being that you owned STAS during its original release, and every studio and live album since), what is your grade? I became Joni aware with "Clouds" and own all the subsequent releases (except for a couple of the recent compilations) so I'd give myself a Joni grade of about 94%. Depending on what you value, a! "high" OR "low" score might be desired. A high score indicating devoted loyalty, and a "low" score indicating complete objectivity. Would "low" score participants make very different choices from "high" score participants once made familiar with all the albums? D*Note featuring Beth Hirsch - Edith And The Kingpin: The HOSL chestnut roasting on a trip-hop fire. Purists may not care for it, but I think it's great. Beth's vocal has a clear whispery quality to match the tempo and arrangement. Some mysterious song, and a nice beginning to this collection. 2. David Cantor - Urge For Going: Hmmm, this one is a bit of buzzkill compared to track 1, particularly when it's one of my favorite Joni songs. Why meddle with such brilliant lyrics? The only good thing I can say about this one is that he throws in a couple of different chord changes, but even those are not necessarily very good. 3. John Trones - River: Very pretty, a theatrical cabaret performance style. I do like the little "Carol Of The Bells" bits thrown in there. And after all, what would be a December covers release be without including Joni's Christmas standard? 4. The Tributes - Both Sides Now: A copycat version of the symphonic BSN recording, but when you're called "The Tributes" do you expect a lot of originality? All that being said, it's OK. 5. Sally Dworsky - All I Want: A genuine vocal, Sally underplays it and is accompanied by an equally subdued piano and it all works really well. One of my favorite covers of this one. 6. Janiece Jaffe - Twisted: A live performance, a very loose vocal, especially when she appears to forget the words and starts scatting along. The guitarist doesn't miss a beat though; really nice Tuck Andress-style playing. 7. Wibi - Help Me: We don't get too many acapella versions of this one, and it's really tight and playful at the same time. Coming to you from the acapella group at York University. 8. Ted Cole - The Circle Game: Accompanied by the kids at Camp Walden. About what you'd expect a fireside version to sound like, perhaps it will bring back some memories for some of you who sang this one at camp. 9. Leo Collignon - Cast Your Fate To The Wind/Both Sides Now: An instrumental medley, if you don't recognize the title of the first half you'll surely recognize the tune when you hear it. (It's composed by Vince Guaraldi who gets a lot of attention this time of year.) A pleasant little piece of acoustic guitaritry. 10. Sherry Kennedy - Raised On Robbery: This one had been on my want list for awhile, lucky for me it got a CD re-release about a year ago. While faithful to the original, she throws in some original touches musically and lyrically. 11. Margriet Sjoerdsma - Help Me: Leave it those European jazz artists to bring the freshest arrangements and sounds to the mix. From The Netherlands, Margriet offers up a tasty pop-jazz take on Joni's biggest hit. 12. Sophia Bilides - Urge For Going/Hot Buttered Rum: Another medley, this one from Greek-American Sophia, who has a lovely almost too-clean voice and is backed by piano. And the medley works because the thought of Hot Buttered Rum sounds pretty appetizing on those Urge For Going days. 13. Jimmy Takeuchi & His Exciters - The Circle Game: Definitely not a campfire version, this one's strictly for twistin' by the pool. Wonderful snippet of cheese with horns, organ, surf guitar, you name it. 14. Janie Fricke - Both Sides Now: Country star Janie Fricke has sung with all the greats, and puts a predictable country stamp on it, without going all Dolly Parton on it. From her "Tributes To My Heroes" CD. 15. Emely Anne - All I Want: Patti's buddy in the northeast, Emely was kind enough to contribute a copy of her CD to the Joni covers cause. Her version of the Blue nugget is pretty solid, close to Joni's but featuring some nice musical coloration too. 16. Gayle & Company - Woodstock: It's tough to put an original spin on Woodstock, and most covers either model themselves on the CSNY cover, Matthew Southern Comfort, or Joni's. This one takes bits and pieces from all of those and adds some new ideas of their own; harmonies, guitar licks, flute solos and such. A nice live folk-rock sound. 17. Liam Frost & The Slowdown Family - River: And here's another original take from this UK outfit, a bit more revved-up than most and it works quite well. 18. Matthew Sandoval - For Free: Wow, this one comes from YouTube and it's amazing in its quiet intensity. Matthew truly makes this one his own, accompanying himself on keyboard. And that brings us to the end of another CD's worth of Joni covers from around the globe, across the years and into your ears. Hope you enjoy it and hope that it brings you some joy. Peace on Earth, well we can always hope, eh? Bob NP: Matthew Sandoval, "For Free" - --------------------------------- Be a better pen pal. Text or chat with friends inside Yahoo! Mail. To process the albums totally out of context and time would HAVE to give you a different perspective. Like I said, as much as I really like Shine (almost like a drug that I quickly became addicted to) I can't fit it in past albums that have been like comfortable sneakers for me for 20-30 years. And the issue will only become more prevalent as time marches on and more and more new fans come on board. I wonder if the music will continue to evolve to the point where subsequent generations of Joni listeners won't even be able to talk about albums per se because they're more tuned into individual songs only? Another tip of the hat to our faithful fun-thread-starter up there in Ohio. Bob NP: Bob Mould, "One Good Reason" - --------------------------------- Be a better pen pal. Exactement. THIS is how Generals talk. Here are two quotes I posted to my high school alumni club/website in February 2003, sending up my prayer in a desperate attempt to stop the war: "If we go in (to Iraq) unilaterally, or without the full weight of international organizations behind us, if we go in with a very sparse number of allies, if we go in without an effective information operation.....we're liable to supercharge recruiting for al-Qaida." - --General Wesley Clark, former NATO Supreme Commander "It's pretty interesting that all the generals see it the same way, and all the others who have never fired a shot, and are hot to go to war, see it another....We are about to do something that will ignite a fuse in this region that we will rue the day we ever started..." - --Marine General Anthony Zinni, former Head of Central Command for U.S. Forces in the Middle East Nobody stopped to hear them. They had the fight, They had the insight. The "decider" went on with his "shock and awe" and "mission accomplished" and "bring 'em on!" (one of his most despicable utterances, imo) and "noble cause" and "money trumps peace" and the rest of his crock of merde and lies and look at the holy mess the world is in. (NPIMH: "How can this be? If I had a heart, I'd cry...." Words cannot express how grateful I am that Joni has given us the gift of "Shine", capturing so eloquently with words and music the breakdown of this century.) When I worked for Lamont's campaign in Fall 2006, General Clark came to a rally we put on at UConn, and I had the good fortune to meet him and shake his hand, twice. Electricity. I was so impressed with him. He knows what war is, and he is against this one. I remember him yelling to the crowd: "How can you 'stay the course' when you've driven us into a ditch?" (TIC: that son of a bitch!). Here is General Clark talking again. He shines on lousy leadership, licensed to kill. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J8H6RomGjJM&feature=related "No more lies! When I lived in Carolina, I went once to the Christmas in July festival in West Jefferson, North Carolina, where a lot of the Christmas tree farms are. For some people, that's their livelihood, growing Christmas trees. It's not like they're walking into a forest and cutting down trees that would otherwise be left alone...these trees are grown to be Christmas trees. And it's nice to have a tree where there otherwise wouldn't be one, for a month or so. Ultimately, I don't really think that Christmas trees are the problem. Yes, a parallel can be made between the Christmas tree tradition and developers moving in, mowing down trees and building more buildings but if you really examine it, its not the same thing. I think people definitely plant trees but they should above and beyond anything having to do with Christmas. I like the tradition of a tree. To me, the idea of boycotting Christmas trees would be like boycotting florists and banning all cut flowers. Which would be silly.
