Wow, what a gem! Thanks for that Bob. JOTMAS is also one of my faves. Gives me chills every time...especially when she sings "roar like forest fire". So cool to hear it in the raw like that. Phyliss p.s. did you notice that one of Joni's old "friends" Jackson Browne is part of the Habitat for Humanity Christmas Jam in Asheville this year? And Peter Frampton too! Unfortunately we will be out of town... Why did Joni add the title 'Ludwig's Tune'? Is there any relation between the song and some of Beethoven's work?> Who better to answer the question than Joni herself? Here she is at The Troubadour in LA on November 17, 1972 performing it with an intro explaining the origins of the song: http://tinyurl.com/358asf JOTMAS is one of my favorite Joni songs, I refer to it as her 1st symphony, with "Down To You" being her 2nd and "Paprika Plains" being her 3rd. You remember Jenny. She's the one who was discussing statistical sampling with Bob S. Plus, she knows harmony, sings great, and writes. My favorite part of the album is the word right after she sings >He's the one who left me >He's the one who left me In the next line, she throws in one more word, just one word, which deepens the meaning and hits the solar-plexus everytime. In another spot, she (simultaneously) furthers the story, keeps the meter, makes the rhyme, and uses the word "complacency". She makes it seem so easy, it's almost spooky. How many other songwriters could do that? (I mean, not counting Louden Wainwright III, Richard Thompson, and Joni Mitchell). Mark, there is something to be said about living and loving no matter how painful. That is why I admire Joni and her music so much. No matter how it turned out, she was still brave enough to tell the story...just as you were. That is where the beauty of her music lies. If the memory feels good, hold on to it. If it doesn't, hold onto it anyway because it proves you are alive and that you can feel. You are a survivor of love and you should be proud of that. To love deeply and richly no matter how the other person reciprocates it is a sign of character and depth in my opinion. This you most definitely have dear Mark. Ahhhh, my most very and always favorite Joni album ;-) Can't believe I could at one time in another century sing those songs. Almost makes me want to give up the smokes and get rehab to do it again. At the 2000 BSN concert in L.A. Joni sang JOTMAS just off the freaking chart. The 1972 Troubador tape is thanks to old time JMDLer Pat Mead who personally snuck in a reel-to-reel to pull it off! It is my fave "bootleg." When I began school to study law the very first lesson they drilled into our heads was that it was spelled judgment NOT judgement. I figured I'd take their word for it. (They also told us it was subpena NOT subpoena but my firm spells it the ancient way, none the less). I will always gush about FTR - nothing has ever blown me away as much, although I do like the reminiscent bits of it on Shine. A belated thanks to Laura for that gorgeous unreleased Joni song now covered by Strings Attached. Geez! That was really wonderful to hear. Hope everyone is enjoying all the holiday cheer and chaos! " As I posted earlier this month, I was in the audience at Carnegie Hall 3 months before this performance. I do not recall for sure whether she did JOTM&S, but she unveiled several songs from FTR, which was still 9 months or so from its release date. Regarding the new songs, "they were real, and they were spectacular". Pretty, pretty amazing. It was very interesting to hear those songs for the first time live, in that venue - a bit tough on the audience (which had come expecting to hear only her "familiar" songs - which she did a good number of), as you might imagine. I was literally shaking in my seat. She was really something. Bobsart **************************************Check out AOL's list of 2007's hottest products.
