Well I don't have any children (and never will, I don't want any) but I did name my bike (an actual bike for summer rides, not a motorcycle) Willy. Willy and I had some good late evening rides in the summer that I now dearly miss. It's going to start being that time when "Urge For Going" gets to be my theme song. I play that particular tune when it is very cold and snowy outside. Here, in the part of Ohio I live, we had our first actual snowfall where snow was visible on the ground. Here was a songwriter from the other side of the world, a female and 20 years older than me going through the same situations (no pun intended) as me. When I was about 20, I had a secret affair with a married man who lived a few streets away from me. He was a school teacher whose name was Richard. It was the wrong thing to do but I felt that I was totally in love with him. He had a good life with his partner and a good job at a Catholic girls' school and knowledge of me could have ruined his life totally. I protected him by remaining discreet but it never sat right with me. Hi Sherelle. I felt quite vulnerable revealing this story so publicly. I've never even talked to family or friends about this. I had liked Joni's songs earlier when I was hitchhiking around the country and I had travelled to Canada before then too but hadn't paid close attention to the lyrics of every song right away. It wasn't until after my sordid affair with Richard that I listened to the lyrics of The Last Time I Saw Richard and realised how closely her story matched my own situation. It wasn't detroit nor 1968 and Richard's partner wasn't a skater but everything else fit so disturbingly well. Richard told me that I was too much of a romantic. I'm sure he felt affection for me, maybe even love but, he was satisfied with his married life although, he couldn't have been that satisfied. Something was obviously missing if he wanted to be with me too. Maybe I was his therapist. When I met him again years later, it too was in a dark and dingy cafe. No Barmaid in fishnet stockings though. Or maybe there was. I never noticed. Most of the waitresses in that area are university students trying to make ends meet. Obviously, I still think of Richard and wonder how his life has turned out, whether he is still with his partner, whether they ever finished their renovations (it was a beautiful old house), whether they still have the dishwasher, the coffee percolator, whether he still drinks at home with all the house lights left up bright. When I saw him again in that cafe, he was still in the same situation; not quite satisfied. He thought he could get the love and affection he was missing from me. I gave him pretty much the same advice Joni gives; he hadn't really changed. He was just romanticising some pain that was in his head. He really did have a sweet life. He just couldn't see it. I would have given anything for the stable life he had. I guess I was torn between finding love and settling down and my need for freedom and my "urge for going". I still fall for pretty men who tell me pretty lies. Jeannie, you were spot on about Two Grey Rooms too. Maybe I'll tell that story sometime too.
