Indonesians have simple names? ;-) Raden Adjeng Kartini? Hidayat Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono? Diah Permata Megawati Setiawati Soekarnoputri? Not meaning to mock people's names or anything but even by Malay standards these are highly unusual names.... Well, I guess even Malaysians have rather unusual names... James Bond Wong comes into mind... Elvis Cheah... yeah, you can tell who their parents liked.... Though I must say Zubairi is unusual for a first name... but I think my grandparents had grand designs on the family... Zubairi, Hilalluddin, Fathi. Those are the only uncles names I can think of... my aunties names had more 'normal' Malay names... Fatimah, Salmah. Bizarrely I can't think of what the other aunts and uncles are called... they were always called by their rank in the family... each child has a nickname according to what position in the familly they were born into... 1st son, 2nd daughter, 1st daughter etc etc) the youngest son (like me) gets called Bongsu so I had an uncle who I called 'Ayah Chu' (which was a form of Bongsu) which literally meant Father Youngest Son). There is a whole swathe of my dad's family who's real names I don't actually know and people talk about them in their rank nicknames and I don't know who they actually mean for the most part.... I think Hejira Afriadi sounds quite nice. But then he might get called Haji... kids might think he's already gone on the Haj.... As for Jericho... he might get called Baitul-Muqquaddis. Something new and very interesting for me. Anytime, you want to teach us something cultural, artistic, new, anything, I'm game. okay, my just turned 4 year old niece's name, Aja Blue, was influenced by Steely Dan's and Joni's albums, 'Aja,' and 'Blue.' She's so tiny and cute! She thinks she's a boy. For Thanksgiving, I found this cute, 'Builder Bob,' outfit, a surfer's swim shirt, a baby boy's basketball uniform and some soccer shorts and sports warm-ups at one of these outlet places, so I got some good deals, send them with my son to her, yesterday, and when I called my brother now to verify Aja Blue's name history, he just told me she loves them and has been wearing all of them today in rotation according to what she's playing at the moment. In our upbringing, especially with my poor and most dearest and yet dummy mother, we were made to feel homosexuality was abnormal and not to be tolerated, which I never felt comfortable subscribing to, causing so much confusion and bitterness in my head with her retaliations, when I could tolerate it with acquaintances. So, she'd accuse me of being gay just for having gay friends and I am not~~I'm just me. Well, now that my mother sees her preferred baby grand-girl, Aja Blue, telling us she wants to marry a girl when she grows up and has actually had masculine mannerisms since she could start expressing herself, my mother's had make an about face and now all of a sudden has a compassionate outlook on homosexuality at 73 years of age. Had I bought that clothes for Aja last year she would have wanted to lynch me and I'm not kidding. Exactly two Thanksgivings ago, we were at my sister's place. The eldest of my brothers, (my mom's favorite son, whom she made to stay away from gay people as if they had the Plague, just like her) had a son who had just been accepted to Texas Tech and was so happy he was moving on. Ever since he was little he acted like a girl and his mom would go into hysterics if anybody even accused him of being sort of feminine. Well, I went to my nephew, Edward, to wish him well that evening and simply asked him if he had ever read Harvey Feirstein's, 'The Sissy Duckling.' Well, all drama queen antics started and shit hit the ceiling fan after that Thanksgiving dinner. He said in soap opera drama, "Are you suggesting I'm a fag?" I said, "No, Edward, I'm not. I'm trying to get you out of a zombie stage, that's all!" He wailed out to his mommy, loud, in front of everybody, "Mother, Auntie's insinuating I'm a fagot." The rest was all like drama vs. drama to see who wins the Academy Awards for Best Dramatic Scene. So, so embarrassing in front of family and friends, all of whom were taken out of context. I got my stuff, and I was walking out, said, "Look, the academy awards ARE OVER, like dad said before he died! Finito! No more!" I've not attended another Thanksgiving meal with them (next year I shall, God willing) and now "Little Edward" is back in town, still loves his tennis and swimming, gave up Texas Tech for SAC and works as a lifeguard for the YMCA. My son says he's the most flamboyant gay he's ever seen when he's out there strutting his stuff at the pool and now my mom buys him material things she likes for herself and I'm still out in the dog house! That's the way it's always been. No empathy~~no gratitude! Jeannie rian afriadi wrote: Jamie wrote: <<>>>> Ummm.... I asked the manager if they had more copies of SHINE and he looked around at all the displays, saying "That's strange, we're having a hard time keeping it on the shelves. I know where I can find some." So he went back into the stock room and brought out an unopened box containing lots of new releases, mainly by women artists. In it were about 20 copies of SHINE mismarked at $18.99. Upon my urging the manager said that he would put them on display by the front door at the correct price of $9.99 beside the huge Beetles display. I've often suspected that one reason Joni's albums aren't faster sellers is because record stores and radio stations only highlight the big boys. Well, all drama queen antics started and shit hit the ceiling fan after that Thanksgiving dinner. Actually, if you (or I) want to talk about Indonesia, you have to point the specific tribes. We have more than 500 tribes and each tribe has its own uniqueness. Raden Adjeng Kartini and Diah Permata Megawati Setiawati Soekarnoputri are exceptions. Oh, actually, R A Kartini (she is an emancipation hero from Central Java) is a simple name: Kartini. Raden Adjeng is a kind of name like countess baroness or something like that. The real traditional Javanese name is sooo simple. Come on, think about : Soeharto; Soekarno; Wiranto; Winiarti; Soetopo; Soendari; Waldjinah; thats it. No middle name. No last name. But of course no one gives his/her children names like that anymore, except few conservative Javanese. Kings/nobleman descends have more sophisticated names (but not so sophisticated). Example : Hamengkubuwono, Soemitro Djojohadikoesoemo. Among Balinese : A few example : I Gede Made Indra Baruna, Ni Luh Putu Oka. OK, seems like theyre sophisticated, but not. Balinese are Hindus. The first three or four or two words of their names indicate their caste. So their names will be as simple as Indra or Oka. Anyway, Balinese caste system is not as cruel as Indians. Among Makassars of South Celebes : Ichwanuddin, Awaluddin, Hasanuddin. Among Sundanese (my tribe) of West Java, names are like songs (they rhyme!) : Yani Mulyani, Wida Suwida, Susi Susiyani, Tika Kartika, Ganjar Ginanjar. RIDICULOUS!!!! Thank God, now parents seldom name their children like that. And thanks 2 my Mom and Dad, for not giving me one of those ridiculous names. Noblemen descends have more sophisticated names, e.g.: Agie Ahmad Ginanjar Suryaatmadja. Anyway, my full name : Rian Muhammad Afriadi Buddyawan Hadianaprawira (read: Ree-an Moo-hammad Boo-dee-a-one Ha-dee-a-na-pra-wee-ra). Not so difficult, right? Only 42 characters. The letter a should be pronounced like a in mad in British accent. Well Jamie, IMO, Fathi Hilalluddin Zubairi, Fatimah, Salmah, are not real Melayu names. They are arabic. But, since the Malays has been influenced by arabic culture since long long long time ago, OK, we can call those names Malaysian names. But if you want to find the real Melayu names, you have to look at the graves of people died circa 1100 years ago. Well, since Orang Melayu and some tribes from western part of Indonesia share a similar culture, i guess real Melayu names wont be far from names like : Hayam Wuruk or Gajah Mada or Ken Arok or Diah Pitaloka. (those are very very very very classic Indonesian names) Well, jonipeople, sampai jumpa di lain waktu! ALL the ballet photos in the CD insert are magnificent Looking at the credits I seriously wonder if Joni didn't take most of these shots herself? I know that the medicine wheel backdrop is all our Joan and that she co-co-choreographed the ballet but i just realized even more than ever what an INCREDIBLY consummate artist she continues to be..........
