Before it, she was the sharp-eyed songwriter stringing songs about troubled relationships across vast open prairie. After it, she sounded wiser and hipper, a jazz sophisticate whose melodies came bunched in waves and bursts of scat-singing capriciousness. According to conventional wisdom, Before is where the world-changing stuff can be found Blue and Hejira and the rest and After is where Mitchell goes noodling, lost in the cul-de-sac of high concept. Wild Things Run Fast, her first set of new material after Mingus, suggests that's not quite a fair estimation. It has one of her most nuanced character studies the slithery "Ladies Man" (audio), which sketches a smooth operator in tones that are admiring one minute ("You could charm the diamonds off a rattlesnake") and repulsed and mistrustful the next. One song waxes nostalgic about the "birth of rock 'n' roll days," while another finds Mitchell dispensing a withering insult "You Dream Flat Tires" (audio) over a shuffling backbeat that runs hot and then from time to time unexpectedly evaporates. Wild Things also contains one of Mitchell's most inventive jazz inspirations, "Moon at the Window" (audio), which features her longtime foil Wayne Shorter on soprano saxophone. Here's another chance to savor Mitchell's unique mood-setting skills: Moving through a furtive, surreptitious melody, she sings warily, sending a chill through the syncopated theme that's enhanced by her smears of painterly multi-tracked vocal harmony. It's a carefully assembled creation, but it feels ruled by impulse. The vibe sounds tremendously loose Shorter is the king of the darting aside and as a result, it's one of those nocturnal gems that happen in the lonely last hour of a jam session, when the paying customers have vanished and it's time to go home. - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Deb Messling -^..^- dlmessling@rcn.com http://www.sensibleshoes.vox.com - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 21 Nov 2007 07:56:59 -0500 From: Bob.Muller@Fluor.com Subject: Re: ZoSo psyched!!! I have always thought Banquet to be Joni's greatest composition, both lyrically and musically." That's high praise from one of our most knowledgeable members. I too had trouble warming up to Banquet for many years. Over time, it rose in stature for me, and I do consider it the most important song on that record and, yes, her first really pointed social commentary. I would also reiterate a theory of mine - that Joni carefully selects the first and last songs of her records (and to some extent, of the "sides" of each record), considering those positions to be places of honor. I am confident that Joni felt this was an important song when she made For The Roses - which was a truly fantastic record in every respect, but especially in terms of its breadth. Bobsart PS - for those of you who haven't seen or heard it, try to check out the version of Banquet performed by Claudia San Souce (sp?) with Steve Polifka on piano at the (2003 ?) jonifest. From that, you can see how much artistry it takes to simply play the piano arrangement well, or to sing it well (much less to do both at the same time). Not to mention composing the melody and harmony, producing piano arrangement, and writing the fantastic lyric. Bravo to Steve and Claudia for that performance. My introduction to Banquet occurred at Carnegie Hall in Feb 1972, where Joni performed it before an audience that had never heard any of the songs from For The Roses (it was still several months away from release). Here's a link to the review. _http://jmdl.com/library/view.cfm?id=814_ (http://jmdl.com/library/view.cfm?id=814) PPS - when I picked up my ticket at the box office the day of the performance, the woman at the ticket window said "I heard her practicing before .... she's really good". **************************************Check out AOL's list of 2007's hottest products. The Joni mention came in a paragraph that noted that they aren't the first to try new ways to sell records. It was noted that Garth Brooks had signed a similar deal in 2005 with Wal-Mart, and Beyonce released an exclusive DVD with them. Then "Joni Mitchell and Paul McCartney are selling their music through Starbucks". Not much, but at least they got the order of importance right. (I love Paul, too, but....). The WSJ's position ? Some rockers (Gene Simmons was quoted as saying that all of the little filing-sharing kids should have been sued off the face of the earth) complain about the changing environment. "We (the WSJ) believe in property rights as much as anyone, but when technology is changing, businesses have to change too - and that includes the business of music. It would take a LOT to get me to go into a Wal-Mart, and no, a new Eagles record ain't it. I also found it ironic for someone like Henley, who has taken on so many causes, to give exclusive rights to his work to an outfit like Wal-Mart. I guess money makes scruples fall as fast as trees.
