I got word this am about the passing of my dear friend Rodolfo Garcia. We grew up together and he moved to Germany where he learned to spek German and graduated medical school in Germany and went home with his German wife to live with their children. I am so sorry for your loss of which we have all had too many of, of late. I would like to hear more about the cruises. I will be home Sunday and home for 12 days before our final tour of the year. I am trying to book a cruise with the band and some other singer songwriters from N.O. for next year. Would love t see you guys. Much love! PaZ P.S. Julian taped Charlie Rose for me so I should be watching it about this time on sunday night. Enjoy all. So much Joni so little time! And of course the posts went into overdrive! Whew! I'll try to be more up to date now (despite upcoming travel) so that I can comment on things and NOT MISS ANOTHER JONI BROADCAST EVENT! Damn! Thanks to U-Tube I did finally see the CBS Sunday Morning thing...nice piece. Yeah, short, but nice. I do not want to miss Charlie Rose though. Does anyone know when this is really going to be shown so I can set my recorder? The website says Guests: Joni Mitchell Appearances: None. What's up with that? Did she cancel? Inquiring minds want to know. Also, Bob and I have booked both the John Mayer and Friends and Cayamo Singer Songwriter Cruises through www.Sixthman.net , back to back in February. Is anyone else from the list going? If not, then WHY? It should be a blast plus: EmmyLou Harris, Patty Griffin, Shawn Colvin, Lyle Lovett, John Hiatt etc etc etc.! Contact me or the website for more info. I've already suggested they do a Herbie Hancock and Friends Cruise. Wouldn't that be interesting! I had a major dream last night. The kind where you wake up and go back to sleep and it picks up again. Started out as annoying unexpected visits from large numbers of extended family (which not surprisingly echoes my current real life) but it turned into a full blown Joni dream when "Jamie Box of Paints" (who I know only from his screen name on this list) shows up and clues me in it's all elaborate ploy to lure Joni to a pool party, which happens successfully. (paraphrasing Dylan, "there's nothing about that girl I don't like"). And I've enjoyed two other soulful recent releases as well: 1. Chaka Khan, "Funk This": Wow, is this a treat - and there's totally truth in advertising, this disc is funky as hell. It really takes me back to the days when you could click on the radio and hear EWF, Rick James, Rufus, Parliament/Finkadelic, etc. It's pure fun, of course it includes her awesome covers of "Ladies' Man" and my favorite track is her cover of Prince's "Sign O' The Times". While my early faves were the songs I was familiar with, by the 2nd listen I loved 100% of this record. 2. Bettye Lavette, "The Scene Of The Crime": My first exposure to Bettye was her jaw-dropping interpretaion of "Last Chance Lost" at Carnegie Hall. Most of us who were there that night picked that moment as the centerpiece of a night filled with many fine moments. Having heard two of her albums now, I understand that this was not just a fluke for her, it wasn't just that she was in the zone that night at Carnegie Hall...Bettye invests EVERYTHING she has in her soul in every syllable she sings, it is truly amazing and gut-wrenching. And a BIG BIG part of what makes this disc work is that her 'back-up band' is one of the strongest bands out there - The Drive-By Truckers. And it's a perfect marriage, just like Booker T & the MG's propelled Carla & Irma Thomas and all the others at Stax/Volt in Muscle Shoals, these Alabama folks get inspired by Bettye's emotional investment and in turn push her to reach as well. Changing gears now and tossing in a quick movie review, I watched "La Vie En Rose" (as opposed to Charlie Rose which of course I will see) and I loved it too. The actree who plays Edith Piaf gives one of the finest performances I've seen in a long time, and I loved the direction and editing and they way you could simultaneously love, hate, understand, and be bewildered by this unique character. Like Mark & Mark said, one of the things that Joni does so well is to talk/infuse her songs into you. When Edith was coached into investing herself into her delivery, she became the success that she was - I'm sure it was that emotional spirit that Joni picked up on. It's a fairly long film (2 hrs 20 mins) but it never dragged for me. Happy Friday all! However, when I first went to the site to try to find it, one of the things that came up rather prominently as an option was an interview of Jewel. I don't really know her or her music, but since she has been compared to Joni in the past, I thought it might be interesting to watch it, so I did. Something that struck me about him was a seeming lack of personability - he didn't seem to engage with her or appear to be interested in her at all. He just seemed to read off pre-prepared questions, and then ordered her to read one poem from her book, and then he asked her to read another one, and then he asked her to read another one, and that was pretty much it. The poems he asked her to read were listed on a sheet of paper. It all seemed very mechanical. So I'm just wondering if maybe he's like this with everyone? Your new cd is just wonderful. Folks don't kick me out for saying this but Jenny is my new Joni these days. I listen to her more than anyone else. I also listen to her "old" cd just as much. That would be the one that I burned from her website where she first posted her unofficially recorded tunes. I guess you could say I have one of the only Jenny Goodspeed bootlegs. You can find them for sale at my blog on Ebay. JUST KIDDING JENNY!!! But seriously, great tunes bud. Look forward to seeing you at fest next year. Love db >>> "Jenny Goodspeed" 11/15/2007 12:52 PM >>> Suze, I love it. The Dream Flat Tires tour. Perfect! Well I can review the show - it was a crazy good time and the room was packed with fabulous people and Donna the Texas Tush herself made a surprise visit and Kerry came and I tried to convince her to come back to fest. I hope it worked. It was also about 100 degrees and I was so drenched in sweat my thumb pick wouldn't stay on. Oh and I performed next to a life size cutout of Xena: Warrior Princess. By the way, Suze is the most gracious (and hilarious) hostess. My thanks to her for letting us crash at her beautiful house and basically take it over. I even left cookies crumbs in her bed. Good lord. Thanks Suze, Kay, Anita, Marian, and Bob for the kind reviews. People are going to start thinking you all are getting a cut of the profits! Bob, I laughed out loud when I imagined sharing the stage with Joni. How would I hold my guitar while bowing at her feet? Love sitting next to her in your carousel though! I've heard one rough track off Kay's CD and it's gorgeous - ethereal, transcendent. I can't wait to hear the whole thing. Jenny On 11/15/07, Sue Cameron wrote: > > Hope everyone is doing well. He was right on, concerning those blah, blah, blah, bumbling prime time channel season television show executives. So boring and they sounded off as tinkling cymbals and pounding brass, even though I wasn't listening. They were just there in front of my face. They put me in a bad mood and I was saying out loud, "Shut the freaking hell up, already--I can't take these fluffy-wuffy bull crap conversations over my television set as I'm waiting for Joni to come on!" I mean, are there actually intelliegent folk out there who view Charlie Rose's show as better than most, only to listen to who's doing what and what is going on, on ABC, NBC and CBS? I thought, "Is Charlie Rose genius enough to put these blabbering men right before Joni, just as a contrast, between the shadows and the lights? Or is he oblivious to it all?" Charlie Rose seemed to be right at home with those guys and out of touch with our Joan. She mentally hesitated a couple of times with his weird energy towards her. Maybe he doesn't get it?! I thought he was more intelligent than that! Obviously, not the way I thought he was! And last night he proved it. Maybe he was intimidated with Joni's ultimate grace that flows with Nature and not the Fall TV show ratings. Joni pre-empted someone else who the audience was expecting. Worse is when she sang "Three Great Stimulants" and actually had bottles and trash being thrown on stage. She actually says something to the effect of "hey, stop throwing $hit up here, we're not that bad". She also said later that the anger she felt drove the band to play a very powerful version of "Number One". My dad brought two of my brothers and me up like cowboys and I learned to ride a horse without a saddle. "Just a natural rider like an Indian," he'd say about me. He'd make my brothers ride the bucking bulls. I rode one only once and did a fairly decent job. I always wanted to be a rodeo rider as a kid and teenager, but as I got older, my father said, "It's not nice for a young lady to be riding in front of so many people. Here's a set of the best golf clubs made just for you. Focus on your golf game, now. Forget about horses." I didn't like to play golf and wouldn't listen to my golfing teacher. I was pissed I was born a girl and would tell him I'd ride to one side like Annie Oakley. The answer was, "NO!" Eventually, heartbroken, I forgot about horses and fell in love with my own Golden Reggie. But, my heart still belongs to the horses, here on holy earth, first and foremost, and not the boys. I had taped it and watched it this morning. First he had on several TV critics to talk about what's on TV right now, successful shows, etc. Heavens, it went on and on and they all talked over each other! Joni looked great (I think wearing Issey) but basically it was the same conversation she had with Tavis, what she'd been doing for 10 years, how Jean convinced her to do the ballet, Herbie's album of her songs, her childhood diseases and near-death experiences, etc. I think Charlie is used to fast paced banter because he seemed to want to jump in and finish Joni's sentences when she'd pause to reflect on an answer. Nice clips of her performing and some of the ballet. Enjoyable nonetheless and glad she's getting "face time" even though it is at midnight.
