Joni's system made use of the ultra light Parker Fly to ameliorate the pain from her post polio syndrome. I'd bet that the Gibson Robot is heavier than a standard axe due to the mechanical complexity. Even with all the microprocessors, it's physically tuning the strings. I'm sure that the sound will be less artificial than the Fly/VG-8 since the strings will maintain their mechanically sonorous qualities. The available tunings seem limited, and don't begin to approach the quantity that Joni might use in a single performance, if such a blessed event will ever occur again. If the tunings are customizable this guitar might serve her well in the studio, but I can't see her standing and wearing it for hours at a time. Thus, her portrayals as a man are that of a Black man, instead. I don't know if I am wording this thought of mine correctly to be fully understood. I first noticed it on DJRD's cover, as I also noticed her dressed up like a little girl with an Indian feather on her head, and I think, with a little drum. Then, I remember, Joni dressing up as Killer Kyle on the video. I like the way the dancers dance in synchronicity with the precision and movement of a finely made Swiss watch. Kyle's pain is palpable when he's down on the ground, dead drunk, knowing his baby has been aborted from his girlfriend's womb, his baby's mother's womb so unfairly, when he already loved his growing child. . I guess if I were to portray myself as a man, it too, should be a man who has had struggle for acceptance--a Native American man from any part of this whole continent which belongs to them, especially an Incan, or a man of African ancestry, or a Sephardic Jewish man, a Sufi man, a Hindu man from the lowest caste system, a Gay man, an Asian man, an Irishman, and so many, many other men who have had to work especially hard for a just identification and some sort of acceptance in a sometimes very intolerant Western man's world. He apparantly isn't terribly familiar with Joni's music, but I think it is a very interesting read just the same.? Sounds like it was a great show. Jack - --? ? Dear Jack (and David):? ? ? W I L D !!? ? ? :-)? ? - - - - - -? - - - - - -? ? ? I bet that you want more feedback than that, but that is the single word that seems best to sum up the performance. So, I'll try to reconstruct some thoughts from the almost illegible scribbles I made during the performance.? ? ? As Jack knows, David, my front-row seat was stage right, just at the edge of the proscenium, with a bank of speakers above (and slightly to the left, I think) and a bass speaker at stage level, just to my left. Before the performance actually began, I noticed that there were like 7 - 10 various guitars onstage, centered at two separate locations. There was a concert grand piano stage right of stage center, but maybe halfway back from stage front. Just stage right from that was a Korg OASYS synthesizer. I could not see drums, which were hidden by the grand piano. Later, I found that I could only see some cymbals, during the performance itself.? ? ? The show kicked off with some mind-blowing low growls from the Korg synth, which were probably pre-programmed, as were some other riffs during the rest of the show. That effectively "cleaned my ears" and opened my mind for whatever else might lie ahead. The opening improvization by Hancock, Vinnie Colaiuta on Drums, Nathan East on Bass Guitar, and Lionel Loueke on Lead Guitar segued into a tune by Wayne Shorter. If its name was given, I missed it.? ? ? In fact, the weakest part of the presentation, for me, was a lack of program details. It would have been really helpful to be able to see the titles of pieces and composer names given for each piece. Come to think of it, having lyrics provided for the songs done so beautifully by Sonya Kitchell (more, below) would also have been very helpful. But these were shortcomings of people doing the UA Presents programs, not due to Hancock and Band, I guess. (Though I think that Kitchell might do well to work more at enunciating lyrics consistently, throughout; that might actually detract from the overall effect of her performing so casually and spontaneously.)? ? ? Personally speaking, I could have done in general with less bass and more treble in the sound mix, especially during Kitchell's vocals. Maybe that's because my ears are old. On the other hand, the sound system was powerful and filled the hall well -- providing the best overall sound that I've ever heard in Centennial Hall. (But sometimes the sound was a bit too loud for me.) There were at least two large computer monitors behind Hancock's keyboards, banks of mixers and related electronic equipment, and a gigantic mixing board just offstage, stage left. Each guitarist had three or four monitor speakers. The stage was used broadly and deeply. I've never seen so much stuff onstage for just four musicians (and the occasional singer, who required only a mic). All in all, the sound was professionally and very effectively handled . . . except for my loss of most lyrics during the vocals.? ? ? As the performance progressed, I was led to conclude that the music itself was an interestingly structured form of frenetic chaos. It was nothing at all like the Traditional Irish, Old Time American, Country, Gospel, and even "Mule Skinner Blues" Bluegrass music that I have been focusing on over the past few months! Nor had I expected it to be. In fact, though I have not previously been familiar with Herbie Hancock's music, what I heard when the band got cranking was not far from what I had anticipated.? ? ? I can not readily describe the harmonies themselves. Maybe it is easiest to say what they did not seem to be. They did not seem to be closely related to the Circle of 5ths or to any particular Church mode. ?Yet, they worked.? ? ? Though most of the time I had no idea as to what particular piece was being played, a cut from "Thrust", called "Actual Proof" went by. Also, some music with a 17bpm (beats per measure) time signature was mentioned, having been composed by Lionel Loueke, who is from Benin, Africa. Hancock said that although he can't really play that music, they would be including a riff from it in performance of his own "Watermelon Man", playing it twice, so that we would know they really could do that. I could not figure out just when that happened. It might have been good to hear the riff first, completely out of context, so that even dummies like me could recognize it going by within the "Watermellon Man" context. But it was all great fun, in any case.? ? ? The lyrics of Kitchell's first song were mostly understandable. I could have done with her wearing a simpler dress that did not show off her possible pregnancy and that did not present her in so many differently colored broad bands, vertically stacked . . . as she is, herself (think decolletage; maybe, had she bounced just a little harder . . . ). ;-) The gal is a gorgeous blonde with a clean yet breathy voice that employs her strong sense of tonality, within a powerfully impressive dynamic range. She is about 20 years old. She lovingly remarked that the guys in the band are "crazy", a word Hancock also applied to the others as well as to himself, several times during the performance. Kitchell is not afraid to let go, to be herself, to dance about in something of a crazed trance, at times; and, to sing crazily -- but very effectively. I just wished that I could always have known what lyrics she was singing!? ? ? When Lionel Loueke sang his solo, not understanding his words -- if there were any -- was no impediment at all. He had weaved paper through his guitar strings, just "nutward" of the bridge. Then he sang percussively, using interspersed clicking sounds reminiscent of Miriam Makeba singing her "Click Song" ; but his various sounds came at a must faster pace than those of Makeba in that song. Words can not describe that amazing performace, in which he was joined by the rest of the band only at the very end. Parenthetically, I note that Loueke's Benin is not close geographically to Makeba's South Africa. I have no clue as to how much of what Loueke sang was part of his natve language; nor, how closely his native language relates to Makeba's. Interesting stuff, though.? ? ? Whatever are the actual titles of the songs that Kitchell sang, I have no clue. One had to do with escaping down a river. In another, I got that she "wanna feel free". In yet another, "you complete me and I complete you".? ? ? But after Loueke's solo, I just kicked back and let the rest of the performance wash over me.? ? ? It should be noted that Hancock occasionally grabbed a small keyboard, which straps over his shoulders and neck like a guitar. He typically plays it with only his right hand on the keyboard, bending notes and doing other things with the controls on its "neck". Occasionally, he used both hands on the keyboard.? ? ? With that guitar-like keyboard, Hancock duelled with each member of the band, each of whom "gave up" in seemingly mock despair, to let him show off . . . except for Loueke, who toward the close of that segment "stayed with him' during their a "Duelling-Banjos-like" stint.? ? ? After what was maybe an encore, the performers left the stage just about long enough quickly to relieve themselves, before acquiescing to the insistent applause and shouts from the audience, for more jamming -- when the same guitar-like keyboard was again featured by Hancock. A few in the audience were dancing wildly, here and there. I used the opportunity of concert-end break to move much further back in the hall, so that I could see Drummer Colaiuta and get more of the entire effect from the band, during the multiple-encore jamming.? ? ? All in all, the evening left a deep and favorable impression on me. Though part of me had at first had wanted to be better at analyzing harmonic progressions, by evening's end I was quite content simply to have enjoyed the entire experience.? ? ? Thanks, Jack and David! Much appreciated.? ? ? -Steve-? ? ________________________________________________________________________ Email and AIM finally together. I'd like to try them sometime. On Herbie Hancock's documentary, 'Possibilities,' there'a a TV clip, maybe from a Sesame Street type of setting. It's a younger Herbie, circa mid 1970's, where he's explaining the synthesizer to a group of excitable little kids and their also, very enthused teacher, as Herbie shows the kids how it works. So, I finally got my first lesson on synthesizers. Thanks to Herbie!
