It truly was..there a magnificent energy there that you could feel in the packed house. I finally arrived home last night and was simply exhausted. I'm back at school today and seem to be bouncing back pretty well. Everything still resonates so strongly in my mind and heart. Kakki and Bene were fantastic traveling companions...the whole excursion was magical. My journey even started off with an interesting twist. I had just boarded the plane to fly to L.A. and saw that the overhead compartments were too small for my guitar. I asked the stewardess if she could stash my guitar somewhere and she said that she would, but that I had to write her a song. I asked her her name, and she said it was Melissa, and that I wasn't allowed to use Sweet Melissa by the Allman Brothers. So I broke out my laptop and started writing a song for her and actually wrote an entire song that I think is going to be really cool. I was working on it some more last night and its really starting to come together. The whole thing started as kind of a joke but you never know where you will find inspiration....when it comes you just have to run with it. Another cool moment was at the Bel Air Hotel. We were hanging at the bar, drinking some evening cocktails and listening to the fabulous piano player they have, who's been playing for there for 10 years. I requested My Funny Valentine, which he played and then somehow, the subject of David Lahm and his Joni Mitchell jazz albums came up, and then of course, we thought of his mother, Dorothy Fields, the great songwriter. So I walked over to the piano and asked if he could play a Dorothy Fields song...he immediately perked up and gave a stunning rendition of "The Way You Look Tonight." The Bel Air Hotel is a beautiful cozy little hideaway and they even have swans swimming in streams with little bridges surrounded by lush plant life and trees. We were even thinking of holding a future jonifest there...of course everyone will have to deposit $3000 dollars...lol It was also fabulous just getting to see Kate and Jeff even if it was only for short while. The whole evening was definitely top class as Leslie put it. It was great to see the JMDL so well represented. And thanks to Kakki, we definitely had the best table in the house. Kay Ashley responded so intelligently and made me even more alarmed, sort of like Amelia....... >>...My main fear for the near/immediate future is that the melting of the Arctic ice cap and the rapid thinning of the Greenland ice sheet will dump so much fresh water into the far North Atlantic that the Gulf Stream will become dangerously weak. The "Four Days After the Day Before Yesterday" scenario was very Hollywood and totally impossible, of course, but the general idea is a very real danger: cessation of heat transport to the North Atlantic regions. This would be a catastrophic development, and the geologic record shows that just such an event occurred ~10,000 years ago during the last deglacial period, due to precisely the same factors (too much fresh glacial meltwater in the North Atlantic). The terrifying thing is that this drastic reversal of the deglacial process (the event is called The Younger Dryas event) occurred over a period of several years, not decades or centuries. Glaciers in Europe and North America readvanced significantly (meters) in just that short time. This is an astonishing event, and would be utterly devastating to human and animal populations. Can you imagine several years without a growing season, or a drastically shortened one? Several years of so much precipitation and cold that alpine glaciers could advance several meters in such a short time? This is something humans have not had to deal with in historic times.<< Hey Kay, it is SO GOOD to hear from you again!!! And PLEASE never worry about being reduced to a stupid SNL character because you are aware and deeply concerned about the consequences of human ignorance and arrogance. WHAT a scary combination! 'The Day After Tomorrow' is a very possible scenario if melting fresh water ice floods the North Atlantic shutting down the Gulf Stream (in my simplistic layman's terms). I've always had a problem with the term 'global warming' because that is only half the problem. I much prefer the term James Lovelock coined back in 1960: The Greenhouse Effect. His 'Daisy World' experiments are still SO profound and SO important. In a nutshell, dark surfaces like asphalt roads and roofs hold in the heat while reflective things like leaves and grass (and yes white daisies) actually cool the planet. I am just SO PLEASED that Joni came out of retirement to address this massive mess we're in in such a magnificent way! Her music and lyrics keeps me hanging on ET 'Shine on mass destruction in some God's name! You know, I don't have a problem if Joni, or anyone else wants to smoke - it's a personal choice. But to call anti-smokers "nazis" is extreme. What I don't like is having people smoke around me. I've never smoked cigarettes.... never wanted to. The smoke has always bothered me, and I grew up around a lot of smokers (including both my parents). It's a filthy habit - the ashes, the yellowing of all surfaces in homes, and the stale smell. But hey, if you like that sort of thing..... It's the same with drinkers.... if you're drinking, and getting drunk along with others, it's great. But if you have to endure obnoxious behavior from drunks around you, it ain't so much fun. > I've smoked most of my life and am still a lot stronger and healthier > than most non-smokers half my age! Then you are among the lucky ones (and apparently, Joni too!). But tobacco (remember, it's been laced with chemicals and additives for years) has ravaged millions. Generally speaking, it is not conducive to a healthy lifestyle. gus ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 Nov 2007 20:56:26 -0800 From: "Mark Scott" Subject: Re: Sweet Bird Okay, I'm going to take a stab at this. Sweet Bird is one of my favorite songs. By anybody. It takes me to all kinds of places, a lot of them that are probably exclusive to my own memories and head. With that in mind, I just want to say that experience on the JMDL has taught me that everybody has their own take on Joni's lyrics. So I do not make any claims to this being the one correct interpretation. It's just what I think (as if thinking makes things so!...not!) - ----- Original Message ----- From: "rian afriadi" > Of course i understand the meaning of each word, but i still cant > get the big picture. Example : > Golden in time > Cities under the sand > Power ideals and beauty > Fading in everyone's hand > > > Golden in time? Cities under the sand? I think Sweet Bird is about the way time seems to fly by. Nothing is permanent and youth flies away. We 'lay down golden in time' and we wake 'up vanishing'. My experience has been that when I was very young I gave little thought to being middle-aged or old. I got caught up in living my life and before I knew it, I was 30, then 40 and then 50. At some point I 'woke up vanishing'. I still find it hard to believe that I am 53. It doesn't seem possible that that much time has gone by since I was 20. 'Golden in time, cities under the sand' is another way of saying that everything passes away. Whole cities from ancient times lie buried under sand. The civilizations that built them did not last. All that is left are ruins. Power, ideals and beauty all fade away. No-one can hold on to them forever. > > Even though i dont know the meaning of those words (as sentences), > i must admit Joni gathered the words perfectly. > > Another perfect word-gathering: > Behind our eyes > Calendars of our lives > Circled with compromise > Sweet bird of time and change > You must be laughing > Up on your feathers laughing > > I melt every time i listen Calendars of our lives. This is such a beautifully written verse. To me this approaches poetry. For me 'circled with compromise' refers both to circles around the dates on a calendar and the dark circles that appear around our eyes when we are very tired or stressed. Circles that also appear as we get older and don't go away. The days of our lives are constantly marked by compromise. Eventually the passing and accumulation of those days and compromises leave their marks on our faces. > > > And of course this one: > Guesses at most guesses based on what each set of time and change > is touching. > > Damn! My IQ is 143 but still i cant digest that sentence! I pretty much agree with Eric's take on this line. Nobody can begin to know the meaning of life or the nature of God or what the 'Great Plan' is. All we can do is make guesses and our guesses can only be based on our own experience in our own time. Or 'what each set of time and change is touching'. Joni says it so much better than I can in these jumbled, fumbled words of mine. She says it better than anybody can. Mark in Seattle ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 14 Nov 2007 02:03:54 -0500 From: "Eric Taylor" Subject: $25 million dollar prize njc Sir Richard Bransom's group, Virgin Earth Challenge, has offered $25,000,000 "to the first person who can figure out a commercially viable way of removing greenhouse gasses from the atmosphere." I've been contemplating this crucial question for two decades now. Fast growing trees like redwoods and eucalyptus can convert over 50 tons of CO2 back into oxygen every year. Bamboo is perhaps the best plant to 'sequester carbon' because it is the fastest growing thing on earth and takes centuries to decompose not releasing carbon back into the atmosphere. Presently humanity spews six billion metric tons of CO2 into the atmosphere every year as if the sky was our personal garbage dump. I am not very good at math so I need help calculating this. How many fast growing trees and grasses would it take to counter 'global warming'? To me the first priority is halting epidemic deforestation just so that we fat, lazy white eyes can be served cheap burgers at McDogballs... I irritates me enormously that this prize is all about "a COMMERCIALLY viable way of removing greenhouse gasses from the atmosphere." O for the love of money I HATE James Lovelock's idea of growing algae blooms in the oceans to sequester our gluttonous carbon/methane farts! Mother Nature really needs to win this $25 mil contest. Trees and grasses could easily solve the massive mess we're in if only we lazy humans weren't SO god damn stupid! The grasses alone could replace ALL of the terrorist oil (which the Bush dynasty depends upon to make ever more dirty money) as they've done in Brazil for the past 30 years. Honestly I am going insane contemplating what total assholes man are proving to be. PLEASE prove me wrong! Also, I think they need to update not only their promo video to include at least one of Joni's songs in each of those tunings, but also to update their guitar to make it possible to input any of her tunings. I wonder what things will be like in a few more years - seems like all this kind of stuff just keeps getting better and better!
