I have always loved Hermes' simple philosophy 'As Above So Below' which has long been my goal in life: 'On earth as it is in heaven.' Randomly I opened to page 393 in 'Hermetica' and it healed me on a very deep level. I never understood how to deal with the inner dialogue going round in my brain ever since youth until I contemplated this paragraph about 'the one' and 'the two' ~ "For this, my son, is the only road that leads to Reality. It is the road our ancestors trod; and thereby they attained to the Good. It is a holy and divine road; but it is hard for the soul to travel on that road while it is in the body. For the soul must begin by warring against itself, and stirring up within itself a mighty feud; and the one part of the soul must win victory over the others, which are more in number. It is a feud of one against two, the one part struggling to mount upward, and the two dragging it down; and there is much strife and fighting between them. And it makes no small difference whether the one side or the other wins; for the one part strives towards the Good, the others make their home among evils; the one yearns for freedom, the others are content with slavery. And if the two parts are vanquished, they stay quiet in themselves, and submissive to the ruling part; but if the one part is defeated, it is carried off as a captive by the two, and the life it lives on earth is a life of penal torment. Such is the contest about the journey to the world above. You must begin by winning victory in this contest, and then, having won, mount upward." WOW that is SO profound, at least to me! My better self has always felt outnumbered by my worst halves. Just don't tell that to a shrink or you'll be on so many drugs so fast that 'the two' will win. Now I finally know what to tell those inner voices putting me down all the time. The same thing Jesus advised: "Get lost devils!" (paraphrased) I hope that this helps you as much as it has me deal with the complete craziness of our increasingly sad world. Very nice indeed and a real pleasure to start this rather dismal Saturday. (Winter's arrived, it's snowing here in the South of Sweden). As for Joni being able to remain friends with her exes, I've always admired that, too. But I also think that maybe it was necessary since they all are musicians she had worked with and continued to work with. Had she not remained friends with them it would have been a disadvantage for her work (not her career, mind you, that's not what I'm saying). She was seen tripping down the streets of the city, smiling at everybody she sees, yelling out to everyone she knows: "Hey, did you know it's Joni's birthday today?" When she arrived at the quick lunch stand, http://www.lizziescurbside.com/ she berated the owner, proud-headed Queen Lizzie, for playing some scratchy rock and roll: "Lizzie! What kind of music is THIS? Don't you know it's Joni's birthday?" With one eye for the beat police Sweet Fire calling "You can't deny me Now you know what you need" she demanded: "You need to play some Joni!" Lizzie said: "I don't have any with me. Do you have any? I'll play her; sure!" "I have some in my vehicle! Which one do you want?", cried the MoM, holy-wine-blood pressure beginning to rise. Lizzie: "Whatever you want!" She taught her feet to fly over to her vehicle, grabbed a CD off off the passenger seat, and flew back to the quick lunch stand. She pushed through the long line of customers and threw the CD at Lizzie. "Hurry up, hurry up!" she cried. Before long, strains of Coyote filled the air. The MoM started singing. "I'm up all night in the studio, you're up......" "Listen, everybody! Do you know JOni Mitchell? Listen to this song!" The curious crowd around her grew. Lizzie, while cooly assembling assorted culinary delights, asked: "Yeah, aren't you the one who is President of the Joni Mitchell Fan Club or something?" MoM (who just had to laugh cuz it's all so crazy) said: "No, no. It's the JMDL. The Joni Mitchell Discussion List. It's an international internet community of Joni Mitchell fans." Lizzie: "Didn't you tell me something once about a quick lunch stand, and something about a brown-eyed girl in one of her songs?" MoM (momentarily confused, wondering what Van Morrison had to do with Joni and then picturing the home page quote but then coming to her senses) cried out: "OH! YEAH! Proud-headed Queen Lizzie's! But that's two different songs: "Electricity" and "For Free". Young female undergrad: "I used to listen to Joni Mitchell in art class in high school!" MoM: "Really? Isn't she awesome? Young co-ed: "I really liked her." MoM: "Were you in Ms. Rizzo's art class?" Male grad student: "Wasn't she at Woodstock?" MoM: "No. She was supposed to be but her manager didn't want her to get caught up there because she was going to appear on the Dick Cavett show so..." Lizzie: "Wow, you really DO know everything about her!" MoM: "And of course you know she WROTE Woodstock. You know the CSNY version, right? Joni wrote that." Another undergrad: "I didn't know that." MoM continued: "She wrote so much great stuff. Did you know she wrote BSN, and people always think Judy Collins wrote it?" Some Economics prof: "I never knew that!" And so it went on, and on, and on....painted ponies going up and down all over the place. Meanwhile, two acquaintances of the MoM arrived. She started going off again about Joni's b/day, and they nodded and smiled. Then the MoM asked Lizzie if she would please write "Happy Birthday Joni!" on her white menu board. Lizzie quickly handed her the white board from inside the quick lunch stand and said: "Go ahead!" (Police are now concerned about the MoM interrupting the flow of Lizzie's business. She does good business.) MoM grabs the board and marker and starts chicken-scratching: HAPPY64th BirthdayJoni Mitchell! SIQUOMB! (She is QueenUndisputedof Mind Beauty) xo,pp The crowd around her was getting bigger. She started singing: "If you can draw a crowdAnd keep your virtue..." -- that's on her new CD! Has anyone heard her new CD? I have that in my vehicle, too!" The two acquaintances, Rosebud and Donna, started laughing. "Wow, you really ARE a Joni nut, aren't you?" They shook their heads. They said she'd changed from when they knew her years ago. The MoM nodded gleefully and said: "Yes, and I'm in my glory today. Oh, the power and the glory! Hey, I know (as bright as a neon light)! I should talke a picture of the menu/birthday board for my Joni friends!" Rosebud to Donna: "She's going to take a PICTURE of this! Can you believe it?" The MoM fumbled with her cellphone. Her hands were trembling with excitement. "I can't figure this out! What do I do?" Young male undergrad: "I have the same cellphone. Let me help you." MoM starts singing: "Help me, I think I'm falling....Hey, would you please take the picture?" He took the picture and he gave her back her smile AND he gave her back her cellphone camera. Finally, after holding court and spark for Joni by the quick lunch stand for too long, the MoM went back to her office, wishing she had gone out earlier than 12:55 so she could have spread more Joni round the quick lunch stand. No arrests were reported. It was all in good fun. Police do expect to follow the MoM home when she leaves the workplace for the night ride home. **** Hope you are all having a great Joni birthday, too. I should have done > something. > Hi Monika, Your story has me in tears. I am on the other side of your story and would like to speak on behalf of your aunt as I am a recovering alcoholic who only by the grace of God hasn't met her fate. I have the mind of an alcoholic which really only other alcoholics can understand. Your aunt basically lost herself and died before she was dead. Alcoholism is a disease just as much as cancer. But, it is a disease that tells the person she doesn't have the disease. It is a disease that makes one insane and affects everybody around them who see the person as the person but now unpredictable, unable to be honest, and out of it much of the time... controlled by alcohol. For your aunt, it would not have been just a matter of her stopping drinking that would have gotten her better. She might not have been able to survive even after being detoxed. This is because she had the mind of an alcoholic. It is a dark place to be in where your aunt was, and is very familiar to me. It is very likely that no medical treatment, no counseling, no hospitalizaton, no family support could have saved her. The only thing that has a good history of working for alcoholics like your aunt, like me, is daily contact with recovering alcoholics. You can read about this if you would like. Doctors who have worked extensively with alcohols have written about it thoroughly supporting the concept that the most successful treatment for alcoholics is one alcoholic working with another alcoholic to acheive and maintain sobriety. The amount of alcohol we drink damages our brains so regaining our ability to ever think like normal people is limited. However, those with an alcoholic mind think alike and so when a recovering alcoholic speaks with an alcoholic needing recovery it is like speaking the same language. People who are not alcoholics can't think like an alcoholic any more than an alcoholic can think like a normal person. It is the same for drinking. Normal drinkers can't imagine drinking like an alcoholic any more than alcoholics can imagine drinking normally. This is equal to Polish vs. English. There is no way your aunt could have understood you nor you her in regard to alcoholism. And that was neither her nor your fault. The best understanding of alcoholism by those in medicine is that alcoholism is like an allergy. Some people can eat peanuts; whereas, others break out in a major immune reaction when they do and might even have to be hospitalized. Alcoholics, when we have even a very little amount of alcohol in us, break out in insanity and craving. And once we have great amounts in our blood, our cells are changed so that without alcohol in our blood our cells don't function. At that point we have to have alcohol to survive, or we go through delerium tremens (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Delirium_tremens) like your aunt did without alcohol for a few days. There are others who have experienced the same kind of horrible alcoholic death of their loved ones who can help you get through the grief and guilt. If it gets overwhelming for you, I would suggest you look up AA in the phone book and ask for Al-Anon. Your love for your aunt touches my heart. You are a good and caring person. In my opinion, you did the best you could given the situation and considering your lack understanding of the alcoholic disease. All we really have are, "Guesses based on what each set of time and change is touching." Yes, life is fleeting and all we can do is try our best to love each other and ourselves. Your last words were not your last to your aunt. Perhaps now you can talk to her soul which is sober in eternity. About $120 If you think you have loss of high frequency hearing, which is common as we age, then Sony MDR7506 although they are also circumaural and not ported. They are comfortable and fold into a compact size, and come with a little bag. $99 I have had problems with earbuds-I have tried 3 different brands, and they will not stay in my ears. Some peoples' ear canals are just weird. I finally got a pair that worked, JBuds Hi-Fi Noise Canceling In-Ear Earbuds- they come with three sizes of soft earpieces, and make a tight seal. They are the only kind that have worked for me. The "noise canceling" is kind of a misnomer-they don't cancel anything, but they block outside sounds well. About $20 and they sound quite good. Sennheiser px 100 are open air and light, I have not tried them. About $40. Grado sr60 are about $70, and get good customer reviews. Not circumaural either. I could find videos of Joni playing ACOY and California and these were very helpful, but I couldn't find any of her playing All I Want and Carey, however, Howard's dulcimer transcriptions were enlightening, and of course listening to the recording is a must. After I got tired of trying to learn to play the dulcimer (it isn't easy!), I got out my guitar and played around with Just Like This Train, and Wild Things Run Fast, and Solid Love (inspired by the Streetlight video of earlier in the day). I was constantly amazed at the creativity of the contributors in coming up with names for their recipes. It was fun and it's a thrill to know that Joni enjoyed reading all the bios and liked the whole thing so much - she got to know something about some of us - we came into her view! You keep talking about your apple pie and I have been thinking about making it for about a week now. I discussed it with my daughters who, like me, just cannot imagine cooking apples with garlic! But on the way home today from being a taxi service for some visiting students, I started thinking about it again because of your post today, and thinking about all the apples we have in our garden, and I really want to try it. Is it okay to use regular garlic? I'm not even sure what elephant garlic is! The film is about Bob Dylan, yes, but it is also not just about him. Haynes who is probably one of the very few film semioticians who happen to direct movies for commercial release, is more interested to show how a body (or corporealities, if you ask academics) can function as a cinematic vehicle to portray a character (Dylan in this case) and use that body to alienate the identification of the audience for the character s/he is playing. So I guess it is in keeping with Haynes' vision to use different actors to portray Dylan's phase without regard to gender, color or age. Much like Tood Solondz's "Palindromes" a few years back. For fans of Haynes' work, "I'm Not There" is probably an extension of his desire to forever play and perpetually shift the moviegoers' film expectations. Blanchett is very good as Dylan but so is Heath Ledger. As for actors who can play Joni, I always thought that Canadian actress Deborah Kara Unger looks a lot like Joni -- esp. the 1980s-era Joni. Unger is also a good actress (Cronenberg's "Crash", "The Game", etc.). But if any filmmaker can do a film about Joni using different actors, here's who I think may pull it off (based on their past performances and the type of films they appeared in). Sienna Miller - I thought her waif-like qualities are the what I thought Joni possessed in her early years as seen through various Joni docus. Not resembling Joni at all, Sienna Miller goes beyond superficial depth (alright, an oxymoron) with her character in "Factory Girl". Laura Dern - This actress is underrated but can plumb the depths of craziness without making the character she is playing caricaturish ("Mr. T and the Women" and "We Don't Live Here Anymore" come to mind right away). I think she can do the Mingus-era Joni or maybe even the HOSL period because Dern's films like "Citizen Ruth" and "Rambling Rose" are like Joni heroines. Elias Koteas - I love this actor's work from "The Thin Red Line" to Cronenberg's "Crash". I thought Joni's 1980s period requires an actor of Koteas' caliber to flesh out. Somehow I see Koteas playing a Joni role when Joni was collaborating with Thomas Dolby that defined her synths-80s sound of the 80s. Julie Christie - So I like this actress in whatever role she's in (yes even in that "Finding Neverland" film where she plays an underappreciated character), but her inner glow and graceful mature woman and seeing life from both-sides-now roles in films like "Afterglow" and the early scenes of "Away From Her" capture Joni's period now. A bit astringent but always with an undeniable glow and ageless grace. Lothaire Bluteau - Another Canadian actor who can do anything -- gay Nazi prisoner, actor reenacting Jesus' path, sheik, -- he has done it and always under the radar. I would like him to play Joni's C&S days when her so-called commercial peak allegedly reached a zenith. Bluteau has all the chops to capture the heady period of commercial success that later segued to musical experimentation. Debra Winger - I thought of Debra Winger everytime I think of the brief NRH period. When Joni surfaced from a decade of Geffen-produced albums. Winger seems to nail characters who went through a transformative process and come out a survivor in her own terms. Kimberly Elise - While most people thought of "Beloved" as a vehicle for Oprah, not too many people see how great Thandie Newton was in a titular role that makes moviegoers ponder if she is a ghost or a real person. But very very few people may have been bowled by Kimberly Elise's quietly scorching performance as the other sister who is envious and jealous of Newton. That raw rage and mesmerizing presence still haunted me after all these years. She appeared in films like the updated version of "The Manchurian Candidate" and even that film whose title says somthing about Woman Thou Art Loosed or something like that. But if Elise can show so much with little screen time, imagine what she can do onscreen if she were allowed to age and show the years before Joni's reunion with Kilauren. That would be a great opportunity for her to flesh out Joni's lonely-after-all-these-years period and ecstatic reunion with her long-lost daughter. I know... these are far out choices, right? But in an alternative universe, when biopics need not necessarily mean recruiting actors with the same facial attributes, or temperament, or whatever likeness, then maybe a film about Joni with any of those actors above, can happen. I know I rambled more than I should. So enough and have a nippy weekend to all. In a Cronenbergian and Lynch-ian mode, Joseph in Chapel Hill np: Clare and the Reasons - Pluto studio16a a icrit : A friend rang me the other night raving about the new film "I'm Not There" in which Dylan is portrayed by six different actors, including Richard Gere and Cate Blanchett, who recently won the Best Actress award at the Venice Film Festival for the role - see http://film.guardian.co.uk/news/story/0,,2162356,00.html Found a scene on YouTube - where Dylan (played by Cate) meets Ginsberg for the first time - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=imGyrMce-pU Made me wonder which actors would be cast to play Joni at the different stages of her career in a similar biopic. Although not very consistent with some film performance (or maybe I just wasn't moved; like "Assassins" and some scenes in "Magnolia"), Julianne Moore is a good actress. I think she got the right amount amount of detachment that Haynes demanded for her role in "Far From Heaven" and she still made it work. Yes, to Julianne Moore and thanks Marion for bringing her up. Joseph np: Blue Scholars - Bayani Marion Leffler a icrit : Good question. Spontaneously, I think a mid-period Joni could be played by Julianne Moore. She is such a great actress, imo, so I think she would be up for it. As I understand it, this was a complicated time for Joni, and I would expect Julianne Moore to be able to convey this. The giant elephant garlic is very mild and adds just a hint of garlic taste. It is important not to cut up the elephant garlic cloves (which are the same size as the cut-up apples) because they give the pie a very interesting texture. Every time I've made this pie for sceptical friends it was devoured in one sitting. It goes great with Ben & Jerry's Pistachio Pistachio ice cream..... Enjoy!
