And it has been getting lots of attention lately, so who knows, perhaps it will keep inching its way up. It's a fairly complex song, and typically requires a full band capable of pulling off the jazzy rhythms and chord changes, not to mention the vocals. Like so many of her songs, Joni makes it seem easy and it most certainly is not. Although it could be, it's not likely to be played solo, unlike BSN, BYT, Circle Game, ACOY, Woodstock, etc. Urge For Going was her first song to be recorded by another artist, with Tom Rush & George Hamilton IV leading the way. So, it had the benefit of a head start - plus, it's a DAMN fine song. Bob NP: John Mellencamp, "Large World Turning" Tired of spam? Yahoo! I also think "Urge For Going" is very interesting being there on the top 10... +++++ Maybe because Help Me is too complicated, and that discourages most artists to cover the song. If you check again the top 10, youll find that most of the songs on the list are relatively simple (except All I Want and Carey). Still talking about covers, Youre So Square is #16 and Twisted is #11. Well, can we say that theyre JM cover? You know, Joni herself covered the songs from another singers (i forgot who). So, IMHO, Youre So Square and Twisted shouldnt be on the list. And still talking about the cover, Im so surprised with the fact that there are 552 musicians who have covered BSN. Thats roughly 14 covers every year. Roughly 1 cover every month for almost 4 decades. Well Joni, congratulations. Rian NP. Just ask k.d.lang. The sound editors of the TNT tribute were very generous toward her performance, as anyone there at the taping could attest. If k.d. can't ace it, it must be difficult. Let me explain. I had an Aunt who came from Poland to the U.S. to come live with us to make some money and help take care of my Mom (she has MS) about 3-4 years ago. The first few years she did indeed live with us. However, my Dad (and to be honest sadly everyone) wanted her out of the house. She had come over here to help my Mom but had become more of a problem herself. She had a major drinking problem all of her life. Just about every day (with her maybe skipping a day or two here and there) she would get completely wasted, do nothing for my Mom, and basically pass out. There were many arguments with her about this. My brother, sister, and I refused to ever let her buy alcohol (we'd be at a store shopping and she'd go over to the alcohol...I actually used to yell at her saying I would leave her at the store without a ride if she even tried to get any alcohol). However, I must presume that when we'd be gone at school or work she would walk over to the gas station down the street, buy some booze, and hide it in her room. Her drinking problem was so bad that she actually would experience alcohol induced psychosis after a few days of not drinking. The one time she actually held up pretty long. She knew she had a problem and said she was going to fix it. She actually did go without a drink for a week but then started hallucinating and having delusions--hearing voices, she actually thought I was going to kill her at one point and ended up coaxing a neighbor of ours to take her to the airport (for no reason at all except that she was in this state). That one week though I was very irritated by her erradic behavior I was also happy she wasn't drinking. I thought if she just held out, everything would be ok. And of course she didn't. She ended up passing out after drinking after that week. Well eventually she got married (it was arranged, more for convenience) to a man who didn't even speak Polish. He only spoke English and she only Polish. She was then living with him (unhappily) but would still come over to our house all the time. A time came where my Uncle (her brother) was laid off. My Aunt actually came up with a very clever story on how my Uncle needed to borrow $200 because he was financially in trouble (which he was with being laid off, having car repairs at the time, and needing to pay his rent all at the same time). She told me she would give him the money (she went to his house quite a bit as well) and that he would call me to verify that he received it. I admit I was a little hesitant to give that money but since it seemed to fit, since she told me he would call the next day, and since she kept repeating certain things (she kept saying how she would never steal my money, how I was such a good person for loaning him money, how he would call me the next day over and over and over again) I gave her the money. Well, what happens next? The next day comes and no call. The day after, no call. After a little while I call him and he tells me he never got any money and that he would NEVER ask me for any money. So my Aunt did indeed steal my money. After that incident, she disappeared from our house. She never visited again and was only at her husband's home. Man let me tell you how angry I was and how upset I was with her. It wasn't so much the money as much as the way she did it (she manipulated me) and the fact that she was willing to sacrifice her relationship with me, with our family for alcohol. I know she had a problem. I know this more than I know anything but it hurt nonetheless. Well about three weeks ago or so she actually came to the house to visit my Mom (she was drunk mind you). My Dad had said she was not allowed in the house anymore and to be honest none of us wanted her here either. Anyway I went up to her and basically said, "what are you doing here? There's no money for you to steal from anyone, get out. You're not welcome anymore" (in Polish of course) and then told her husband to take her home. And you know what? Those were my last words to her. My sister came up to my work today to tell me my Aunt was found dead. An autopsy is being done and the funeral will be sometime next week. In a way, I can't believe it and in many ways I can. I feel like such shit. I feel so guilty. I feel SO guilty for not doing anything really to help her problem. I should have done something! I feel so guilty for all the harsh words I ever said to her (there were many during the years she was living at the house). I feel guilty for not talking to her for almost a year (after she stole my $$). I feel so guilty for having my last words to her be so cold. Great last words, huh? I feel guilty because the way I see it, she died alone....the rest of her family is in Poland. No one deserves to die alone. But really...truly...I feel so awful...so guilty that I didn't do enough to try and help her. Why didn't I? She didn't want help I keep telling myself and then she drove herself out of our lives I tell myself too but it doesn't make any sense. I should have done something. Could something have been done? I keep thinking that if I just swallowed my pride, visited her, and tried to help she'd still be here. I can't believe the last words she heard from me were telling her to go away. Well she's gone now but that's not what I meant. I just feel so much guilt. If this was just a random relative passing away, I could handle it. The grief would be there but not this horrible guilt. I feel like it is somewhat my fault. I was her family here and I turned my back on her. The freakiest thing about this situation is two days before she visited my house again, I actually had a dream she died. In the dream I felt the guilt that I now feel and sadly it is a reality. I should have taken that dream as a cue....God why didn't I? I am going to watch my words carefully from now on....because you just never know when you will say your last words to someone....life is fleeting. -Monika Tired of spam? Yahoo! The rhythm of the interview was weird because he gushed so much. It seemed to throw off Joni's flow of thoughts. But Joni looks and sounds better than ever. She seems genuinely happy and content. Perhaps that's because so few musicians are able to wrap their frets around her greatest achievements. Amelia should be #3 on this list!!! I fondly remember being lead singer in a band, Dog's Breakfast, back in the early 80's. We played several Joni tunes. Black Crow was the easiest but it took us forever to get Jericho down. We had to play it over and over at least a hundred times before I could even begin to sing it and our bass player gave up after the second month. So it was just me and the guitarist who preformed it on many occasions. It remains one of my very fave songs to sing and especially harmonize with. We also did All I Want and This Flight Tonight which are fun and easy to play. If I were in a band today I'd want to cover: 1) Borderline 2) Night Of The Iguana 3) The Wolf That Lives In Lindsay 4) Fiction 5) My Secret Place 6) Slouching Towards Bethlehem 7) Turbulent Indigo 8) Otis & Marlena 9) Sweet Bird 10) Dawntreader ET 'Holy Earth how can we heal you?
