Cookbook History: We started putting the cookbook together in 1998. The ideas for it were conceived by Julie Z. Webb (hostess of the very first Jonifest in 1998) and Bev Wolfe (TheFishpond). Each recipe title was a play on words from Joni's songs. I collected all the recipes and bios and put them into a basically homogenized format and it was "finished" by early December, 1998. I sent it to Wally Breese who had said he might be able to pass it on to Joni, but the version sent to him never got to Joni and it was decided to add more recipes and bios, especially since there were new and old members who still wanted to contribute. More recipes and bios were added and Don Rowe designed that beautiful cover page with a painting by Marilyn Urbanski, and Jerry Notaro helped with editing. Unfortunately, Jerry's name was missed out on the cover page, as were the names of Julie and Bev, for which I am very sorry. I tried to send this second expanded version to Joni through Michael Paz but it was returned to him as undeliverable. He brought her copy to Jonifest 1999 and I brought three additional copies - one as a gift for Ashara, and two which were raffle prizes - one of them was won by John Van Tiel and the other by Bern Giordano. These three versions look exactly like what finally got sent to Joni - same binder and content. Unfortunately, I could find no more binders exactly like these, so there are only four cookbooks in existence (including Joni's) with the same binder and content - I don't even have one like it (boo-hoo!)! Eventually (I think it was in the fall of 1999), Wally contacted me with the address of Joni's agent and suggested that I send the book to the agent who would pass it on to her. I did this. She did receive it then as a birthday present and we all heard through Kakki that Joni had received it and that she was thrilled with it, as Kakki elaborated a few days ago. I took pictures of the book and the wrapped package, but I don't know where the pictures are. I will try to find them. When I find them, I will scan them and send them to Les for the JMDL site. At one point prior to sending, there was consideration of printing it properly as a book, but the general consensus reached in the end was that it would be prohibitively expensive. WARNING: Long and ooby shooby COMBINED WIRE SERVICES Mansfield, Connecticut Local police have been closely monitoring the activities of the "Madwoman of Mansfield" ever since she was apprehended on September 25, 2007, at 4:13 p.m. and almost charged with DUI. (Unfortunately, there is no state law against DUIJM -- driving under the influence of Joni Mitchell). Police had been alerted to her condition by a concerned co-worker. The French professor reported that the MoM had left her work station at approximately 10:45 a.m. He told of his urge for going to the MoM's office earlier in the day for comfort and consultation, but she was not there. He told police: "Well let me tell you 'bout the way she looked The way she'd act and the colour of her hair Her voice was soft and cool Her eyes were clear and bright But she's not there. There was a yellow sticky note on her computer screen that said: "If you want me I'll be in the Starrrrrbucks." The professor suddenly remembered all the build-up and recent chicken-scratching from the MoM. "Oh, no! Is this the day Joni's new CD is being released?" Mary, the coolest secretary-ever, said: "Yep. Starbucks. I wouldn't go anywhere NEAR that place if I were you! Patti's holding court and sparking there for three hours." When the MoM returned to the workplace at approximately 3:25 p.m. she was highly intoxicated from having sipped two grande (or were they venti?) tea and lemonade concoctions. She was spouting off Joni lyrics right and left and blathering something about "three whole hours of the hope and the hopelessness I've witnessed over thirty years.....like some kind of intense psychotherapy or time-travelling sitting in some cafe, like having open-heart-and-mind-surgery or a blood transfusion like holy wine and Joni renews me again and again and nobody stopped to hear her but me!" The French professor smiled and nodded as an acknowledgement of her euphoria, and then begged her to "drive carefully" as she left for an eye doctor's appointment. Knowing that she didn't listen to his jive (she sang to him: "I know all along, that you are all wrong, you think that I am crazy...but I'm NOT!") and concerned about the dizzy dancing way she was walking down the hallway, he called campus police. Radio blasting, cruising just as fast as she can now, screaming "Strong and WRONG" out the windows, she was apprehended on a black road with double yellow lines near her old hometown. Police escorted her to the doctor's office and asked the doctor just what she had. Due to new confidentiality laws, the doctor refused to share anything about what condition her patient's condition was in. The alert detective, however, spied the patient's file on the the doctor's desk. He read what was written (in the doctor's finest hand) on the inside top left of the manila folder: "Joni Mitchell Fan!" Although the MoM failed numerous field sobriety tests (the local was kicking and shaking on the floor, talking about Bush zombies and singapore slings and the seasons going round and round and being captive on a carousel of time, etc.), subsequent blood tests revealed no alcohol or other drugs -- neither pills nor powders -- in her system. (There was one substance never before seen in the lab: some kind of holy wine in her blood -- so bitter, and so sweet -- but it was unidentifiable.) She was released and given a written warning for "failure to drive right". The MoM has been fairly quiet since that day in September (neighbors report that she has been listening to Shine pretty much constantly), but police recently picked up new activity. Bars in her head, the wires in the wall were humming and police learned (through the interception of 100s of emails to "demfriends" and other friends and kin about anti-war activities across the country -- thank you, George W. Bush for the illegal wire-tapping that helps us find such dangerous lunatics such as this) that the MoM was preparing to get on a magic bus and cross the state borderline on October 27th. This was no longer a local concern; Homeland Security had to be notified. The MoM was heading to an anti-war rally in Boston. Authorities knew this could mean a lot of people looking at big trouble. She could be planning to shake her fists at lightning, to roar like forest fire, or to shine her light like blazes all across the sky. On October 27, she rose up early, with the sun, to ride the bus while everyone is yawning. Armed with a white banner, in this manner, the MoM left her little ranch house on the hill, travelling in some vehicle. Investigators entered the home, passed through her hard-up kitchen, and saw a message on her computer screen. It was from a JMDLer (Uh oh! One of those Joni people!) - -- code name "BG1" -- who had written something about getting on the peace train and arriving at the station at 12:49 and calling her and the lines would be open on her babbling cellphone. The writer didn't know if someone named "SoB" could make it or not, but that she would definitely be there. Alarmed that whenever two or more of them are gathered in her name, there is a love-in, Massachusetts police were also notified of the impending meet-up. Unable to procure a seat on the sold-out bus, CT police followed it to the borderline (or some mark of in between), where Massachusetts police took over the surveillance. A thunderhead of judgment was Gathering in their gaze. And it made most of them nervous They just didn't want to know What she might be seeking, in the refuge of the roads. TO BE CONTINUED (if time and good fortune allow)..... Will the MoM finally get to meet that SoB? How will she feel when she meets that very good friend of hers? Who is BG1? Will her train shake into Bean Town with the brakes complaining? Will she be running behind the times? Will clouds get in their way? Will they go cafe to cabaret? Will these three Joniamigos give peace a chance? Will they find the peace and the star? (Any more questions, Monika?) Bon weekend! Patti P. in Flip City P.S. (sort of long) Yesterday I went out with a new guy I met and we talked quite extensively about music. Of course one of the topics to come up was Joni Mitchell. I actually went on and on and on about Joni and her music. It got me thinking about Evangelists and such. Let me explain! Evangelists are always trying to convert people, making speeches, passing out pamphlets, etc, etc. Man do I wish there was such a thing as a Joni Mitchellist, doing the same thing, spreading the word on Joni! I would be so good at that! If only I could make that my job...but who would pay me? Anyway enough with the silliness, let me get to my point. This guy mentioned that he owned Mingus by Joni. He didn't buy it for Joni but at the time he was on a real jazz kick and when he discovered an album titled, "Mingus," he had to have it. He said he enjoyed the album up to a point but it wasn't what he expected (you can't expect anything with Joni though!). Since he had Mingus, he asked me what other albums to check out by her. We actually ended up listening to the entire Court & Spark album later (I had it in my car) and he seemed to enjoy that. Ok, so now let me get to my point. One thing he asked during my 15 minute or so Joni speech (he asked questions about her, what am I supposed to do but answer?!? I'm like the Energizer Bunny when it comes to music and Joni! I just talk and talk and talk! I just keep going and going and going....) was why Joni? What about her? As funny as this may sound, I found it very difficult to answer in an articulate manner, not rambling but really getting to the core of why I like Joni. At that point I went on and on about why pinpointing her innovation, her unpredictability, how every album has its own tone/style--she doesn't shy away from experimenting, her lyrics, her guitar tunings, her guitar playing in general (he asked how her guitar style was as he's a guitarist too), her ability to articulate things we all feel or think but would never dare say aloud or would never acknowledge otherwise, etc, etc. He also asked me how does Joni sing? I found that difficult to answer but with a smile I said, "with passion." What would you tell someone if he/she asked you the same question? She just has that intangible quality that makes her unique like so many other amazing artists. Sometimes, if you break something apart to figure out what it is, then you've destroyed it. It's not really one thing for me but everything together that makes her as wonderful and amazing as she is. I guess I tend to take a more Buddhist approach to such questions meaning, she is what she is just as James Taylor is James Taylor, Stevie Wonder is Stevie Wonder, etc... She's so lovely in, oh, so many, many ways and I love her, as I know so many of us here do. Joni feels so warm to me, like a true, endearing sister, who never fails me and always soothes and comforts me and who's always there for me and whose blood is my blood. Her face radiates truth and beauty, now, more than ever, and with just a glance of her pretty face I see, hear and feel more than a million odes on an ancient Grecian Urn full of artistic history. Joni's love of the ballet shall now bring new exposure to this graceful artform, because that's exactly where she's at and now, instead of my neices only growing up to the star-maker machinery likes of Hannah Montana, they'll be gracefully dancing instead to Hana who knows how to shine naturally, like Joni, without all the flim-flam glitter stage lights. My little neices put a show on for me, and asked my mother to join me, on a patio stage show of dance, music and singing to Big Yellow Taxi, this past Thursday evening and it was so touching and precious and so energetic. I cried full of emotion and had to walk away after a standing ovation from me, telling them to leave me alone to smoke my cigarette, because I couldn't hold it in and I didn't want them to see me cry like that because it's too much to explain so much love and gratitude for Joni and what her work means to me and the children in my life, up to this present moment. Just knowing they talk of Joni like one of the family members they also know and love, is all that matters to me. They love Joni, too. The minute they walk in the house they ask me to put some Joni on for song and dance. I say okay, and the other adults say, "No, first your homework, then your supper, then your bath, then a little tv, then time for bed. I take them away and do all the things they need to do, after the dance and music and all those other chores are made simpler with Joni playing in the background---some adults just leech the lights out of a happy room and they wilt the bright balloons with lead. No thanks, I'll stay with Joni, always, as do the children. They were playing the maracas, Brazilian nut shaker sticks and the claves and they were right on with the beat. The eldest of the three who's eight years was so impressed with the 'synth' accordian and asked me if I could buy her an accordian. They're good dancers because they take ballet, ballet folklorico, gymnastics, volleyball, soccer, etc., but nobody ever lets them express their talents because nobody really takes the time out to enjoy other than at recitals. I don't get that! Everybody's too busy at work. I told my neice I'll take her to some accordian classes we have here in San Antonio, often, since this is the capital of accordian music---maybe Flaco Jimenez will give some classes this time around again---but she says she wants to play it like Joni and not like a man~~I don't know how to explain the synthesizer, so I'll just find some classes. I must find my grandfather's accordian again up in the attic. That thing is gigantic! So many good things and themes Joni brings to me for the children. I thank God with all that I am for our Joni. I don't know what I would have done or where I would be without her. She's truly in my blood, constantly, more than a case of holy wine, morning, noon, and night. Love, Jeannie nj ' Tired of spam? You're so right and I'm so embarrassed with this addiction. I have no excuse for my smoking, not even a lame one. I've slowed down since I turned 19 years of age. In my late twenties, I've limited my smoking to only nights and if I really need a cigarette during the day, I do so, hiding, for I want no one to see me smoking, fearing I'm setting a horrific example. My son and two brothers are trying to do away with it as much as possible, with success, except for one brother. Yes, I worry for them, for Joni, my best friend, and myself. I do, but I don't fear, because I don't feel disease lurking, like I have with others. All I know is that this cigarette addiction is a personal issue, that somehow separates me from the goings on around me and it's just a quick mental escape that takes me away with the smoke, alone and apart, even if it's just for 5 minutes. The sad thing is that I know I'll never take my nightime smoking away--it helps me think without having to intentionally focus. (sort of long) Loved your post, Monika. To answer your question, the first album I ever bought was the Clouds album. I bought it kind of accidentally, although I think I had seen Joni singing (or possibly Judy Collins doing a cover of) Both Sides Now with guitar on TV and I wondered "What is that beautiful song???" so when I started listening to the album, I was delighted to hear the beautiful song I had heard on TV. Later I got the Song To A Seagull album and I liked it even more. What has always been amazing for me, with Joni, is that I usually like every song on every album, at least eventually. Every song is beautiful and unique, musically and lyrically and, for me, this remained true up through the Turbulent Indigo album. From all of her albums up through TI, there are probably only four or five songs that I didn't like that much (e.g., Dancin' Clown, Raised on Robbery, Pirate of Penance). For many years, it was unusual that I found any album where I liked more than one or two songs to the point of wanting to hear them over and over whereas, with Joni, I wanted to hear EVERY song over and over. Joni's songs are like stories with colorful pictures - sometimes they are funny, sometimes wise, sometimes educational, always intelligent and thoughtful. Also, I really love guitar music, and her early guitar work is truly stunning in its beauty and intricacy (Tin Angel, The Dawntreader, The Gallery, The Priest, I Don't Know Where I Stand, to name a few - and thanks to Sue MacNamara, who started the Joni Mitchell Guitar Files in the mid-90's, anyone who aspires to learn some of these beautiful songs with guitar can now do so, with patience and persistence, by listening to the songs on CD and trying to follow the guitar tablature and chords that are available). I feel like Joni is a kindred spirit and that she speaks to me and for me and I think that everyone who likes her music as much as I do is also a kindred spirit - that there is something really special about sharing a deep appreciation of Joni's music with someone else. (sort of long) In a nutshell, Joni aspires to and reaches a level of artistry in many different categories and musical genres. That's one thing. But what makes her significant on a discussion list level is that lots of people DON'T get her, so that in essence makes those of us who do sort of something special. And that's why I'm here and why I stay here. Not JUST because of Joni & her body of work, but because of the type of person that Joni attracts; intelligent, passionate, opinionated yet open-minded, artistic, emotional, etc. I'll always remember when I told my sister that I was on a JMDL, and her first response was "oh wow, I bet Joni Mitchell fans feel things very deeply". And that's why I don't try to be a Joni evangelist - the majority of folks out there just aren't going to get it. And it doesn't matter a bit to me because now I have all of you that do.
