Also, there are quite a number of other interesting Joni videos here, for the me the most interesting being an interview with her about the new album Shine with some clips from the ballet. - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Christopher Treacy" To: Sent: Tuesday, October 30, 2007 5:48 PM Subject: Intimate NRH on You Tube > Don't know how I missed this, but. > > > > http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aEK9yi3KS4I > > > > If it's old news to y'all, my bad. You'll get a number of other photos from the Hancock concert, more flattering than the one in the article. Also, the best of us do get a little fuller around the midriff as we age. I remember when I finally got to Paris, I saw that it was the youngsters that were uniformly slender. The women my age and older had normal menopausal middles. Don't ever hesitate to remind us how spellbinding our Joni can be. If I remeber correctly this was from a television interview in the Netherlands. I have a concert recording of Shawn Colvin singing a snippet of NRH and it is just so beautiful. I like the paper doll idea. I loved those things when I was a kid. Used to make my own, in fact. Maybe I'll make a Joni paper doll. What about one of those fridge magnet dolls that you can dress? Here are my impressions: Court and Spark Love this, the beautiful intro and Nora Jones sultry vocals bring a new colour to this song. Edith and the Kingpin Whats not to love about Tina Turners tender and gutsy performance here ? Herbies piano is so cool and understated on this tune. The grooviest tune on the album. Both Sides Now the most exquisitely original, unrecognizable and deconstructed interpretation I have ever heard of this Joni classic. Love it. River gorgeous vocals again here by Corinne Bailey Rae. She brings the required melancholy and wistfulness to the song without dragging it down. The musical arrangement is lovely; it simply underpins the vocal line, while hardly picking up any of the melody. Sweet Bird a pithy rendering of this Joni masterpiece that muses on our powerlessness, faced with the changes that time brings. Tea Leaf Prophecy this song takes on all the more poignancy for me because it relates the story of Jonis parents meeting and their early life building a family together. Joni gets to be a true jazz singer here and Im sure she was thrilled both by the collaboration and the end result. Her singing is warm and full of love on this one. By the way, have you seen this great recent photo of Herbie and Joni ? http://www.canoe.com/divertissement/musique/entrevues/2007/10/27/4610278-ap.h tml And this older one ? http://mog.com/images/users/0000/0010/9007/images/1186022464.jpeg Solitude a lovely diversion from the Mitchell repertoire here with this Ellington classic. Interesting to note that this song is also featured on Jonis Artists Choice album. Amelia Im sorry to say that I am sorely disappointed by this cover. While it is surely one of Jonis most beautifully crafted songs, Souzas anaemic, lacklustre vocals just dont do it for me. I so wanted to like this one, but I think I just dont care for the timbre of her voice, nor for her vibrato. Her Down to You is hardly any better. I do enjoy the musical arrangement, however. Nerfertiti perhaps the least accessible tune on this album a hardcore jazz instrumental with lots of dissonance. Not quite my cup of tea, but palatable nonetheless. It swings ok. A Joni favourite, as I understand. The Jungle Line well I just dont get this one. Cohens performance of the lyrics as a spoken poem, while interesting, feels out of place on a jazz album. The piano arrangement is lovely, however. Hey ! Seven out of ten ain't bad ! and Vinnie Colaiuta on drums is a joy to hear throughout the album. You can play FLACs on your computer or convert and burn them to CD. The free programs I am using are "switch" ,"VU player"-and "FLAC frontend" which is the 'official' flac application, created by FLAC's inventor, I believe. Google to get to the official FLAC website for more info.
