This is powerful arrangement of the The Arrangement and, as its Joni song I never really liked, Jennys version is infinitely superior to the original with some soaring vocals  chilling, in fact. She looked almost translucent when she sang it  and the cooling fan was blowing her hair so she looked like she was on some kind of wind swept island. Top moment! The musicians on Under the Ash Tree are sensitive and highly accomplished, the arrangements are well considered and there is a style that sounds, to me, like Jenny. First though, is it the November Vanity Fair???? After reading the review from the Blender Magazine I was angry, disappointed and frustrated. What does "A seam of zany gallows humor" mean?? And why would a reviewer care or bother to mention that Joni has a "bugaboo" about cell phones??? AND..."If Joni is decades past her prime as a songwriter....." who does the reviewer think he/she is, making that really dumb comment? It's really easy to 'review' or offer comments on another human being, isn't it? Especially when the universal "you" can't possibly know how another person feels or thinks UNLESS the almighty comment-maker has spent a decade or so in another person's skin. I want to think that Joni reads (if she does) all of the reviews of "Shine" and comments made about her and either appreciates some remark that's made or has a good laugh or pushes an internal button 'erase' from her incredible mind. I can't imagine offering a critical word about someone like Joni....gee, when was the last time I ever thought of even putting together the words in one of her lines of lyrics? Wait...I'm not talking about our threads or discussions on the Digest....this is an appropriate arena and I believe we are all caring and coming from a clear, well thought-out place in our minds when we discuss things. As far as the irony that Joni writes about the planet and has made the decision to smoke....this is Joni's decision. I have a very strong feeling that Joni respects second-hand smoke etc. I'm fairly sure that Joni feels and does things that maybe anyone may have an objection to...an opinion about...the point is that Joni is and has always been a woman who is an individualist and I don't think she has ever really given a crap about what anyone thinks about her thoughts or decisions. Joni is a genius and with having an intellectual capacity that far outweighs the 'average' person, she's bound to have some differences about her that the 'average' person just doesn't quite gets. I guess...nope, I know I can rant on and on about this but I obviously feel very strongly about judging another person....please don't take this to extremes...we all judge someones actions one time or another. Switching gears....Dave, I'm so very glad you and your family are safe and had the chance to stuff your possessions in two cars. Is there anything you need? After she signed it I told her that I pray for her and Casey every day and looked me right in the eye and grabbed my hand and kissed it for about ten seconds. Electricity. I've only had time to glance at a few digests, but I did see Kakki was worried about us here. Thank God, all is fine in our area. We were just south of the fires (Rancho Bernardo is two towns north of us) so we were very lucky. Again. (For the fires three years ago in Scripps Ranch, that is one town east of us.) We did leave on Monday night just thinking we might need to be out of here should they announce an evacuation. Luckily we had a place to stay. We came back yesterday and although it's smoky and ashy, it's fine. The whole thing is paralyzing and unbelievable. On Tuesday I just stared at the TV for about 12 hours. Thank you all for your concern. Anyone heard from Dave Blackburn (who lives in Fallbrook?) I sent him an email to check up on him and Robin today but haven't heard. Well, not yet - but there are some people trying to push it. If it comes to that point, I hope the laid back amongst us will finally fight back. A few cities here do not let you smoke outside anywhere. And on some of the beaches you can no longer smoke. When one thinks of our normal level of pollution in LA along with fires, it is pretty nuts to not let people smoke outside. I think it is more about control of people. Trust me, some other sin or vice will be next on their list. After the smoking ban in bars there were a few places here that defied the law - and two places were ones Joni frequents. They just paid they fines but I think they even had to stop. I know of some "speakeasies" here operated by Japanese and Koreans that let you smoke inside and also drink past closing hour. They are fun to go to - a remnant of a forgotten time. There is one delightful tiny place where you can still legally smoke inside - the Tiki Ti in Hollywood. http://www.tiki-ti.com/pages/home.html They are exempt from the law because it is all family owned and operated - in other words, they have no non-family employees who can be harmed by the smoke. The owner's father invented several famous tropical cocktails back in the day. I really don't know why they just can't let smokers have their own bars and restaurants. Wouldn't that make sense? Freedom of choice and all. But no, we have to be regulated in every move we make. Sad and scary.
