But in my opinion, Joni's voice has never been better than it is on Shine. I am kind of ticked off with the reviewers who talk about Joni's smoky voice on Shine. Anyone who has listened through the years (all the way through) will quickly discern that her voice on Shine is vastly improved over the last couple of newly recorded CDs (BSN and, especially, Travelogue). It's as if they write that about her voice because they think they're supposed to. Yes of course the voice is affected by years of smoking (no doubt!) but on Shine, the effects are modest. One must assume that Joni's claim that she rehabbed the voice through rest and larynx decompression is true. Something certainly worked. Some great singing on this album. So...it's time for me to eat some (black) crow. When Travelogue was released, I said Joni's singing days were over and the cigs were to blame. I was wrong! How often do I admit that?! Bryan Oh, and what about Joni's voice on The Tea Leaf Prophecy on the joni letters? Absolutely stunning! Unbelievably beautiful what Joni, Herbie and Larry did with the arrangement. I can feel ALL of those private passions and secret storms. Such beauty always humbles me, like when I stare at the vastness and the power and might of the ocean from the beach. jean NPIMH: ~~Papa brought home the sugar~~Mama taught me the deeper meaning~~ nj Tired of spam? I also have her latest album called "The Reminder" and it is a beautiful album that can be savored in various layers and levels (or at least in this fan's ears). The opening song "So Sorry" has a catchy melodic line that plays very well on the lovely husk of Feist's voice. It was also used in the movie "The Jane Austen Book Club" (enjoyable movie; ensemble acting but Emily Blunt manages to stand out) and for once I thought "So Sorry" really captured quite accurately the heart of the film's montage where the song was used. Even down to scoring the song's lyrics with the action. Lily Allen is another banana altogether. Her album "Alright, Still" has a distinctly (distinctively?) jazzy syncopation that is quite lovely in a summer album-kind of way. Her lyrics are funny and often very bitingly insightful. I like "Nan You're A Window Shopper" and "Alfie" from among the original tracks she wrote in the album. Playing her record on air should be approached with care as there are tracks which might get you in trouble with FCC. Which is how I approach Ani DiFranco's album and Nellie McKay. Speaking of Nellie McKay, if I may suggest another album to listen (I am not sure if I recommend buying the album yet), I would suggest Nellie's latest album called "Obligatory Villagers". This one's really really jazz-oriented with people like Bob Dorough and Phil Woods among the jazz artists featured in it. The album is very short compared to her previous 2-CD albums ("Get Away From Me" and "Pretty Little Head") and it dares to be unlikeable despite the funky and tuneful walking rhythm that is present in all the songs. The album is like a group effort with the musicians joining her in vocals in a lot of tracks (similar to the fun chaos in Rickie Lee Jones' "Woody and Dutch on the Slow Train To Peking" or Carly Simon's "Back the Way"). It changes time signatures midway through a song, and the lyrics, while funny enough takes a little time (for me) to digest. But this is no doubt an interesting footnote in the career of Nellie and to her musical evolution as an artist. I like "Gin Rummy" among the 9 songs she performed. I guess the only good thing about the smoking is, it hides the smell of stale beer (and puke). I'm sure there are places you could go in Toronto where you could still smoke up a storm while drinking, but they're probably not places you'd really want to go! The no-smoking-in-bars-and-outdoor-patios-with-rooves-on-em law only started a year or two ago (time flies...) There was a great hoopla made by bar owners who thought they'd lose business, but they didn't at all. The smokers go outside to smoke. And it's not just the non-smoking patrons that benefit - - people that work in bars would be in there all day inhaling second-hand smoke, so you could view it as an occupational health issue. I remember the days when people could smoke at work. I was also a smoker back then and that's going back before my kids were born (my older one is 20 now). The office reeked of smoke and there were ashes and butts (asses and butts?) all over the place. You never noticed how stinky it was until they banned it - another case of "you don't know what you've got 'til it's gone" ;-) Catherine ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 25 Oct 2007 15:48:43 -0400 (EDT) From: Catherine McKay Subject: Re: SJC. If I believe the hype, it's only available at Wal-Mart. I guess there will be no previews on Amazon but I found many (all?) on the site of a Cincinnati radio station: http://www.55krc.com/cc-common/news/sections/special/eagles.html I was surprised how much the harmony on "No More Walks In the Wood" sounds like CSN cira the album called "CSN". The 27th is also the day of action here in Canada against the war in Afghanistan, so people all over N Amer will be standing up on the same day, with the same message. What effect it may have remains to be seen. We've encountered some vocal opposition (who will be there protesting our protest), which at least might bring more attention to the issue. Unfortunately it's supposed to be raining for our event too, which will probably keep numbers down. But we do have a committed group! (If there's anyone in the k-w area who's interested in coming, check out our page at peaceculture.org or write me off-list...) I know there is an event in Toronto, and i'm sure many more elsewhere too. Best of luck for all the marches - make some noise! I've only had time to glance at a few digests, but I did see Kakki was worried about us here. Thank God, all is fine in our area. We were just south of the fires (Rancho Bernardo is two towns north of us) so we were very lucky. Again. (For the fires three years ago in Scripps Ranch, that is one town east of us.) We did leave on Monday night just thinking we might need to be out of here should they announce an evacuation. Luckily we had a place to stay. We came back yesterday and although it's smoky and ashy, it's fine. The whole thing is paralyzing and unbelievable. On Tuesday I just stared at the TV for about 12 hours. Thank you all for your concern. Anyone heard from Dave Blackburn (who lives in Fallbrook?) I sent him an email to check up on him and Robin today but haven't heard. Zenith to nadir and back Hi Dave. The nightly news reports here have said that the fires reach as far south as San Diego but I didn't think about Fallbrook. I should have now that I know where it is. I'm so glad your property escaped the worst of it. They say that the weather has eased now so the critical period is over for now. This part of Australia is very similar to southern California and we face this every Spring/Summer. Make sure there is no fuel lying around and clear out your gutters. That's what they always tell people living in outlying bushland around Sydney. What a wonderful time you must have had with Tommy Emmanuel. This guy is all over the place. A very busy man. One minute he's on the talk shows here, the next he's in California. He is the highest selling instrumentalist in Australia. He is one of the most respected musicians too. He and his brother Phil are music icons in this country. He did a very popular album with Chet Atkins. Tommy has won just about every award possible for a musician in Australia. An amazing talent. I believe he grew up in a small country town somewhere. He looks like a very centred, friendly person. I'd love to meet him. He has such a passion for guitar too. It's interesting that doesn't usually record albums with guest vocalists. I would love to hear him play with Joni. He could do some amazing things with some of her guitar based songs. I have never heard him do a Joni song. Do you know if he has ever recorded a Joni song? I hope you and Robyn are well and safe. James Lovelock, who coined the term The Greenhouse Effect back in 1960 in his prophetic book The Gaia Theory, "says that global warming is irreversible -- and that more than 6 billion people will perish by the end of the century." While I disagree with Lovelock that global warming is irreversible I agree that we self-absorbed humans will not take action to reverse it until it's too late. Action like stopping clearcutting forests, planting billions of fast growing trees and bamboos, and ending our addiction to dirty terrorist oil. It really ticks me off that last month Rolling Stone called Joni Mitchell "a bad example of environmentalism" for her dire warnings on SHINE and then publishes this apocalyptic cover story. But I have come to expect this from Rolling Stone which glorifies men and treats women like sluts. It was never one of my favorite Joni tunes but now it is. One night last summer I told a friend that I was getting a little concerned about this and he said that I should just be grateful it wasn't a song I didn't like. When I got into my car to drive home My Secret Place immediately began playing on the radio (WYEP). That is when I realized the Great Spirit was trying to tell me something. The line that particularly speaks to me is: "It's a place where no amount of hurt or anger can deface." I had never learned the lyrics to this song in the 20 years I've been listening to it. We all need our secret place to escape the insanity of humanity. My secret place is nine acres of wilderness I own on the Rio Grande in Colorado which I haven't visited since 2000. I REALLY need to get back there and soon! This world is making me way too sad and mad. ET "You see those lovely hills? They won't be there for long.
