Reviewed by Stephen Holden A seam of zany gallows humor runs through Joni Mitchells first album of new songs in nine years. Invoking a divine blessing on good and evil alike in the title song, she prays, Shine on worldwide traffic jams/Honking day and night/Shine on another asshole/Passing on the right! She has a bugaboo about cell phones. The red-light runners busy talking on their cell phones named later in Shine also return in Bad Dreams Are Good, as the cell-phone zombies [who] babble through shopping malls. If Mitchell is decades past her prime as a songwriter, she can still come up with the occasionally sharp image (We live in these electric scabs/These lesions once were lakes). And the albums dense, electronically seasoned pop includes her catchiest tune in two decades (This Place). The cruelest joke is that Mitchells smoggy voice is as polluted (from smoking) as the dying planet her songs describe. For this, she has no one to blame but herself. Victor ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 24 Oct 2007 10:13:54 -0700 (PDT) From: Monika Bogdanowicz Subject: Re: Blender Magazine - Shine Review But smoking and pollution/destruction of the Earth are two completely different matters. Smoking starts off as a personal choice (not so much a choice after a matter of time when addiction comes into play) harming mainly yourself (and someone who may be sitting next to you). A cigarette doesn't pollute the Earth comparatively and just because you smoke or take part in some other vice (pick your poison) doesn't mean you shouldn't have the right to say what you think. I could understand if Joni wrote an anti-smoking album and the reviewer had a problem with that citing the contradiction but this is just silly. Sure, does Joni have anyone to blame but herself for her limited range? Only herself, yes. But she doesn't seem to complain or be nostalgic about her voice back in the day. Didn't she even say she thought she sounded like she inhaled helium when she listens to her early records? Everyone engages in some sort of behavior that is less than healthy--smoking, eating fast food, drinking (this is a biggie), etc etc. I don't think it's up to anyone else to point these things out and then make it seem like the person doing whatever it is doesn't have a right to say whatever he/she feels (especially in Joni's case as she's not contradicting herself here). For example, just because someone isn't religious doesn't mean he/she can't say something about religion. Does this paragraph make sense? I could understand if Joni wrote an anti- > smoking album and the reviewer had a problem with that citing the > contradiction but this is just silly. > I don't think anyone is saying she doesn't have a right to say what she thinks. But by the same token, she is subject to criticism just like anyone else. I'm not interested in getting into a debate about smoking but no matter how you look at it, it is a pollutant and it affects more than just a person sitting next to you. In Asheville, several of the popular bars/clubs are smokeless and it makes a huge difference. You can leave without reeking of cigarette smoke and that feeling of burning eyes and longing for a breath of fresh air. OK, but she does go on about people being obnoxious and inconsiderate with cell phones, and guess what. Most of us non-smokers find most smokers to be inconsiderate or obnoxious...that is to say, the obnoxious and inconsiderate ones draw more attention than the considerate ones, so that becomes the perception. Same as cell-phone users. I would agree that Joni is being a little hypocritical and criticizing people just because their habits and/or vices are different from hers. Can we stretch the definition to include things little kids mis-hear? Please? When my son Chris was only four or five times round the seasons, he called the "World Series" the "World Serious." We still call it that today in my family. Chris was *very* serious about baseball from a very young age and was the home-run king of Mansfield in high school. A giant first-baseman and sometime pitcher. He had hopes of playing in college until he dislocated his shoulder three times playing ice-hockey. Those damn hockey games! His dreams lost some grandeur coming true. (He came out with another cute mondegreen/misheard word once when we were trying to buy a house, but money was tight. He had gone about six times round the seasons when he said: "Why don't we just buy a condom?") This is so funny because I've been thinking about writing a post about Feist. Aleda, if you're referring to the ad that has the video of the song '1234' playing on the Nano, then yes, that is Feist. And to tell the truth, that ad got me hooked on the song and after reading a few posts on the JMDL about Feist, I bought her cd 'Reminder'. I don't think hearing a song on a tv ad has ever prompted me to buy a cd or check an artist out before. I really think 'Reminder' is a piece of high quality work. Feist has a distinctive voice that she uses beautifully. She's one of the 'folk' artists featured in the Vanity Fair piece that has been posted about here. The blurb with the photo is a very good description of her voice. Like Joni, though, I don't know that she should be classified as a 'folk' singer/musician. The songs on 'Reminder' are very interesting melodically with above average lyrics. I think she's the real thing and will probably check out her back catalogue. I can see how you might '1234' annoying. But for me it's a catchy little pop ditty that maybe has more to it than first meets the ear. I think there is depth to Feist's work and that she has a lot of potential. Dave, I didn't know you lived in Fallbrook - I have family friends there who were also evacuated. I tried to find info about the area and last heard that structures near Grid Rd. (where they live) have not been affected. I hope you suffer no losses. I think everyone in Cal has done such an outstanding job in this emergency. Everyone has come together to help, including several states' fire departments and Canada (sending down their Martin Air super tanker from Vancouver Island, not to mention leasing us their SuperScoopers) and Northern Baja Mexico which is supplying us with some energy after we had to take San Onofre Nuclear power plant offline because of fires near Camp Pendleton Marine base. The only thing that is so negative is the shallow attempted politicizing of this tragedy. It really is like opportunistic vultures swooping in looking for the negatives or having no clue of what we face here instead of concentrating on the many good people and heroes who are helping us. Now I am hearing politicians on the news saying we have it You can all see the dramatic footage of the fires out of control. If we send people in sometimes they would be killed! Sometimes, there is nothing that can be done. I can understand that people who don't live here or grew up here can attach all kinds of things to this but it is important to know the truth and not project on us here. The Santa Ana wind conditions and fires are NOT because of global warming. They have been around since probably the end of the last ice age. Juan Cabrillo who "discovered" Southern California for Spain in the 1500s named L.A. Harbor Bahia de los Fumos -- the Bay of Smokes. We have always had this phenomenon. The heat is not generated by global warming but rather from what starts out as cold air storms coming from Utah and the Great Basin into our area. We are very mountainous in SoCal and as the cold winds come through our thousands of canyons, the air heats and speeds up tremendously. Our native brush here is extremely flammable. Each plant is like a can of gasoline. Any lightening strike or tossed cigarette or downed electrical line can set it off to explosive effect. In these current 19 fires, some have been set by downed power lines, one by a truck on fire, many from embers traveling miles in the 80-100 mile per hour winds and many more deliberately set by arsonists and firebugs. They have already caught a number of people who seem to find it entertaining to set off more fires in this mess. Here is information about the Santa Ana winds. http://ask.yahoo.com/20020114.html The only criticism if people want someone to blame is that we build developments in places where the ancient native Californians would never have settled. However, I am not against this modern settlement. We are a beautiful state, with gorgeous weather and lots of opportunity. I can't blame people for moving in. I only wish we would make these new developments more fireproof and safe. Still, no matter what we do, we will always have mother nature and firebugs to contend with. It looks like things are getting a bit better now with control of the fires. I just pray we don't get an earthquake on top of it. I remember about 20 years ago we had one year of the whole package - fires, flood, mudslides, storms taking out beaches and earthquakes and some enterprising soul came up with the bumper sticker "California - Not For Sissies." ;-) Kakki ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 25 Oct 2007 00:11:14 -0400 From: Deb Messling Subject: Re: Amelia on the latest Herbie Hancock album I completely agree.
