All the best, Marian ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 24 Oct 2007 06:22:14 +0200 From: "Marian Russell" Subject: Re: Bad Dreams are Good? - NJC Well, maybe this bad dream is good for somebody: I bought a piano for about $2,300 and it was *really BAD*. For some reason, I didn't realize until after I'd bought it that some of the keys were missing. Of course the guy I bought it from wouldn't take the piano back and return my money. It was more about 30 years old, and the wood looked really good and interesting with a combination of dark and light woods, but the keyboard was a complete mess. So if anyone is thinking about buying a piano for more than $2000 (because I'm certainly not), make sure it's really ok! Marian ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 24 Oct 2007 04:42:02 +0000 From: Patti Parlette Subject: NJC (except obliquely) - march against the war(s) Applause, applause, Barbara! Life is our cause! I am with you all the way. I have an inchoate post (Hi RF!) in my draft box with lost of details which I hope to finish and send tomorrow. Peace, Patti P. Date: Tue, 23 Oct 2007 11:03:15 -0400 From: "Barbara Stewart" Subject: Those who listened to "Shine", who saw aspects of her mixed media art show, read interviews, know that one of the primary reasons Joni Mitchell came out of 'retirement' was her frustration and anger at the current situation of war and aggression in the world. So I don't think I am being transgressive in adding this message to the mix of communications shared on the list. I'm going to ask you to make a stand, not stand aside. (See the bottom of my email for details.) The US invasion & occupation of Iraq and its aftermath continue, now a longer war for the US than WWI or II. Billions of dollars are squandered on death and destruction every month. And the bellicosity and overt threats of the administration against Iran have increased in pace and volume over the past 3 months, equivalent and eerily reminiscent of the months preceding the Iraq Shock & Awe campaign. The situation is serious, very dangerous, imminent. Anyone who has empathy for the suffering of the Iraqi people, who can imagine the impact of bombing campaigns over Iran, who can place themselves in their shoes, must arouse themselves out of their apathy or fear or bystander status and make their opposition known. The vote in November wasn't enough, the constant lobbying of Congress hasn't been enough. As with Vietnam, the only thing that has a hope of affecting policy in any way is a truly massive unprecedented mobilization of visible bodies on the streets. Only when massive numbers of citizens take themselves out of their normal patterns and do the unusual - peacefully standing, marching on the streets demanding to be heard - will our politicians begin to wonder if they can continue to defy majority popular opinion on this issue. So I urge you, beg you, to think about taking one afternoon out of your lives to try to make a difference, joining with 100s of thousands of others similarly motivated. This Saturday, Oct. 27 , there is a coordinated series of 11 ++ marches being held right across the country, organized by all sorts of community groups under the umbrella of UFPJ, to call for an end to the war and no attacks on Iran. Go to www.oct27.org for local plans - just click on the city closest to you. NYC, LA, New Orleans, Chicago, Seattle, Boston, Jonesborough TN, Orlando, Philadelphia, Salt Lake City, San Francisco, etc. (from memory). And more. I am very much involved in the antiwar mvmt, now as I was in the 60s. It's a matter of life and death and calls for your participation. My deepest prayers go out to all of you in the wake of this hell on earth! May I just say that you are handling this catastrophe incredibly well. Only one dead so far! And the contrast between the Katrina Astrodome and the San Diego stadium is educational. Did Governor Swartznegger really spend the night there last night???!!! My brother and his beautiful family are close to the Riverside fire awaiting evacuation. Today 1,000,000 people were ordered to evacuate their homes. That is one in every 38 people living in California!!! I lived in California for ten years during the 80s when I realized that global warming was the most serious threat facing our planet. Back then California experienced seven years of drought when the geological record showed that the longest drought there was three years long going back a million years. I coined a word for what I saw going on there: ecocollapse. Californians like to remind the rest of the world that trends start there. But is that really a good thing? Now I am worried that the huge trees surrounding my home in Pennsylvania, suffering several years of drought, are a fire hazard. My neighbors want to cut them all down and restore it to the corn field that it was when it was built in 1952. Last year I planted black bamboo which IMO is the best plant to fight global warming because it is SO fast growing and absorbs more CO2 than any other plant without releasing it back into the atmosphere. Bamboo and many other grasses are also our best hope for counteracting global warming and producing alternative fuel and fibers. Fast-growing hemp is great too. Perhaps these increasingly horrible fires, floods, droughts, tornados and hurricanes worldwide will finally wake us up. Meanwhile I am relishing SHINE which has reinvigorated me to fight "the massive mess we're in." Rolling up my sleeves...
