Driving to Jonifest was a blast because my friend and I listened to all the Joni albums I had in a row (chronologically of course though at that time I only had all the albums up to Hejira). It seems to me that they represent the duality in Joni's music. The beauty of the piano and the "scratchy staticy" sound that Wayne puts on the saxophone... on the BSN cover the piano is the "somethings gained" and the saxophone is "somethings lost" and then there is that ethereal sounding guitar note flying off into the stratosphere which is the illusion of it all.... signing off for now, Peace, David - --------------------------------- Shape Yahoo! in your own image. Details: As you turn down the volume, your ears do not hear bass as well. A "Loudness control" adds bass when you listen at lower levels. It should be called a "Quietness control". Most amps have a switch, and Loudness compensation is either on or off. But you have a rotary knob for Loudness on your receiver, and they usually work like this: When you listen to Pearl Jam at full volume, you don't need loudness compensation, so keep it at "0". When you want quieter sound, use the Loudness control to turn it down. As you turn it counter clockwise, it does 2 things 1.) It reduces the sound level overall and 2.) Boosts the bass Jim ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 15 Oct 2007 20:44:54 +0200 (CEST) From: Joseph Palis Subject: RE : Re: Amelia covers and conversations between Herbie and Wayne A friend of mine once made a comment that he finds "Amelia" devoid of any musical peaks. That it does not have a recognizable chorus. If I am appropriating him correctly, I guess he means that it is not instinctively hummable (i.e. accessible?). But I like "Amelia" as a song, structure-wise and lyrically even if it is probably not my fave Joni song (there are so many excellent excellent ones). It takes a certain amount of courage to sing "Amelia" because, if I may allude to my friend's comment, it is not a 'star turn' piece. What is beautiful though is that it brings out the storytelling aspect of the song and brings it out on the singer who sings it. I like Suzanne Vega's version of it in Carnegie Hall (maybe because I am also a fan of this woman -- hard to tell). I haven't heard the new version yet with Luciana Souza (and I am probably one of the very very few in the List who still don't own Joni's "Shine"). Well I read the first half of it at Jonifest and planned to finish it after Jonifest. I finally got to finish the second half (due to certain delays) a week or so ago and found the book rather enlightening and enjoyable (minus the last chapter which the author just bashed everything after THOSL). Anyway, I really enjoyed the analysis of a Car On A Hill, a song I had never liked up until today. After reading the analysis, I wanted to listen to it and give it another chance. Today I did just that and love the song now! I can't even remember what I didn't like about it in the first place First off, I love the story in this song--a woman waiting for her lover to show and well, he doesn't. It may sound sort of silly but I can actually picture a music video to this when listening to the song. That may be because last year at Broadcasting school we did have to make music videos. I just have this wonderful mental image of this story. Man would I love to go back to that school and make a music video out of this song! Secondly, I love how it is very rhythmic. You can bob your head to it (although that doesn't necessarily qualify a song to be good! I'm only saying!). The majority of the song musically is upbeat and I really enjoy that. Next, I really like certain lyrics in the song such as, "He makes friends easy He's not like me I watch for judgement anxiously..." Those lyrics are something that I personally could relate to and I could imagine many others relating to as well. I also like, "It always seems so righteous at the start When there's so much laughter When there's so much spark When there's so much sweetness in the dark" Man, Joni really pinpoints something so true in such an original way. It just blows me away. Lastly, I really like the "there's so much sweetness in the dark." I really like how she put that, that way. Quite clever if you ask me! I also really enjoy the way she sings that line and in particular the way she sings the word, "sweetness." Incredible! I've also got to say I enjoy the entire melody of the song and particularly the vocal melody of the passages I highlighted. And, geez, I better wrap this up but I have one more thing to say. Though I do enjoy the story of the woman waiting (and can picture her pulling her curtain to the side looking out the window waiting for her man!) I would tell Joni (or any woman for that matter) that if your man is three hours late, he isn't coming. More over, I would tell her he's not worth it and to slowly move on and find someone who will respect and love you....someone who wouldn't stand you up.... -Monika "We all come and go unknown..." - --------------------------------- Fussy? I know a good lot of you on the list are very familiar with and fans of jazz music. That being said, I need YOUR help! Could you recommend a jazz album or two to me to start off with? I've downloaded a song by Miles Davis/John Coltrane that I enjoy and I've been listening to the jazz channel on my cable. I also plan to go to a jazz club here in the future as well. What would you recommend to a girl coming from a rock-n-roll/blues background? Keep in mind, of the jazz I have heard, I tend to like the kind of jazz that really swings--the kind with the bass upfront movin' and groovin'. So, what have you got for me? I'll take a look at see if my local library has it...or if it could be ordered.... Hey Laura. I just wanted to say I really appreciate and enjoy your enthusiasm. That's so always so refreshing. I can understand what you are saying about Shine. The album really expresses what Joni feels and sees in the world today--her observations, her fears, her hope, etc etc. I think in every album Joni gives a part of herself, some albums more than others. -Monika LCStanley7@aol.com wrote: ET wrote: > It took 10 listens of Shine for me to conclude that this is my favorite > Joni Mitchell album EVER. > Hi ET, SHINE is home for me. It brings all of Joni's other albums together some how. The more I listen to it, the more I am moved by it... sometimes to tears. I have been listening to HOSL and Hejira in my car because I gave my car-copy of SHINE to a monk at a monastery. He told me he was a body gatherer in Vietnam and how some of the other American soldiers got hardened hearts and were cruel to the Vietnamese civilians... and how he confronted them by asking them if they felt strong for doing so and how wrong they were. When he said that, I immediately thought about "Strong and Wrong" and after our conversation I asked him if he knew of Joni Mitchell and sang him some of "Circle Game" to which he said something like, "yes, I remember her, she always had a lot to say in her songs and wasn't afraid to say it." I told him about SHINE and then gave him my copy. Anyway, listening now in the light of SHINE to HOSL and Hejira, I hear them differently. I don't know what it is exactly. Hard to explain. I feel closer to Joni than ever before because of SHINE. I hear her in a new light. She has made herself transparent on a whole new level in SHINE. What a masterpiece. "Shine" is having to grow on me a bit, but so did TI, which I grew to love. I also played CMIARS today, and realized again how much I like this one. Joni's lyrics on this are truly amazing, to me anyway. Big Yellow Taxi 2007 for me is even better than the real thing, limbs and all. I've heard countless versions of this timeless song and just must chime in to pronounce that this accordion-driven rendition is my new favorite. Can you see the clowns dancing? After about 40 listens of SHINE I am reduced to a puddle of mush. If this amazing album doesn't touch millions of hearts I will lose all faith in so-called "humanity." WHAT IS WRONG with people who dismiss the amazing music because they object to the brutally honest lyrics??? Or worse yet, can't let go of the way the song sounded back in 1969...
