On Sunday I was getting kind of tired of all the children songd he played again and again. So I thought, hey why don't try with some Good Joni Mitchell music. Well, most of the album was much to slow for his taste... But then he discovered "Night of the Iguana" --- and that was something for him. He listened to it again and again. I think we heard it eleven times that verey day.... If Joni ever makes a Children Compilation, which I of course know she never will, that track should definately be there... I was so releaved that the melodies on shine are so Bright. The text were so heavy, so the melody lightens the whole heavy load for me.... N.P. Bad dreams are good in the great plan Best! Depends on who you include though...you start throwing people like Bacharach, Rodgers, Gershwin into the pool and it gets a lot bigger. As far as the pop/rock era, which is what we're talking about, Joni is definitely up there though. I'm not going to claim that Herbie's tribute is my favorite...there are just too many to choose from, and some of the best from them outshine the Hancock trib. Rachel Z, David Lahm, Lydia van Dam, Ian Shaw, Big Yellow Taxi, A Bird That Whistles, among others all have their moments. Sadly (name recognition being what it is), since Herbie is more established and is using well-known performers to boot, his project has received way more attention than most of other equally-deserving projects. Pasted directly from my MySpace blog review: ? As my luck and time would have it, I was fortunate enough to see Crosby & Nash live in concert this past Sunday (10/07) at the Palace Theater in Playhouse Square in Cleveland, OH.? First off, let me tell you the actual venue was beautiful.? I suppose that is expected with it being a theater hall and all but it was very pleasant nonetheless. ? Now I?knew this concert was going to be very relaxing and interesting.? I was worried that I was going to miss C&N's dark half--the S and the Y (Stephen Stills and Neil Young).? I saw CSNY last summer and it was one of the best concerts I had ever been to.? But once again, fortunately,?after they started playing and I got into it, I didn't miss the dark half and found this half to be quite pleasant and pleasing.? Though I love Neil Young and Stills' songs tend to be my favorites in CSN, all was well. ? Secondly, there was a great rapport between David Crosby and Graham Nash.? They both seemed very?lighthearted and in good spirits.? Jokes were thrown between them and they chatted to the audience quite a bit which I must say I always enjoy.? There was a natural?camaraderie between the two of them.? After the song Guinnevere (which requires very tight harmonies), they both gave each other a high five in satisfaction of their performance! ? Anyway, let me get to the most important part of being at any live concert--the music.? I was really amazed and pleased with how fantastic the two of them still sounded.? Their voices, separately, were as smooth as butter and together still created that magical harmony that C&N are known for.? Amazing!? You could really tell they took their performance seriously while at the same time enjoyed themselves.? After all, what is music if the artist isn't enjoying himself?? ? I will say my favorite songs from the night were Deja Vu (with Graham Nash on harmonica!), Wooden Ships (a favorite of mine from CSN), Guinnevere,?and oddly enough, Cathedral which is a song I don't like all that much.? However, that night?that song?really was oozing with electricity and spirit.? Both Crosby & Nash really got into that one and that really showed through.? Oh I will also say I enjoyed the encore,?Teach Your Children, because of the energy from C&N and the audience.? Everyone was on their feet for that one.? And let me tell you, it's not an easy feat to get everyone on their feet?while we're all sitting in such, comfortable theater seats.?? ? Overall, the show was a success.? I really hope C&N thought so too and remember Cleveland for what it was--a magical night with music reminding us that it can still bring us together ("we can change the world").? Music is mysterious that way.? I also must comment that Graham Nash really is a gentlemen.? Once again, (like the CSNY show last year) he looked really grateful to be on stage and was constantly thanking the audience.? I appreciate his?sincerity and will forever remember this?positive experience during a time which was not so positive outside the music hall.? I also really enjoyed David Crosby's amusing comments all through the night.? I say thanks to David Crosby, Graham Nash (and band) for that wonderful night. ? (In case you're wondering some other songs they performed were.... ? Military Madness, Marrakesh Express, Long Time Gone, Lay Me Down, Immigration Man, In My Dreams. I Used To Be A King, Carry Me, Milky Way Tonight, Just A Song Before I Go (another really tight one!), Naked In The Rain, Wasted On The Way, Jesus Of Rio, To The Last Whale...Critical Mass/Wind On The Water, Almost Cut My Hair (very powerful performance by Crosby on this one).......) - -Monika ________________________________________________________________________ Email and AIM finally together. I love that an artist I love as much as Joni is well-loved by another of my favorite artists. One of the things I like about John is that he loves to be surrounded by his "die-hard" fans, he offers pre-sale seating to his fan-club and those seats are normally in rows 1-5 center and I've been fortunate to have front row center to a few of his past shows. He likes to see everyone singing along with him and dancing (he's a fantastic dancer). I wish Joni would do the same if she performs live again. John is a small-town man from the midwest and he's stayed pretty true to his roots. As one of the founding partners he's a big part of Farm Aid each year; he contributes generously to causes he believes in and did an entire summer of what he called the "Good Samaritan Tour" which were free concerts performed in the center of large cities. I was able to see him in Cleveland, Detroit, and Chicago on that tour and taped two of the three performances on my video camera. He is also married to one of the most beautiful women I have had the pleasure to meet, Elaine Irwin Mellencamp, who is the spokesmodel for Ralph Lauren and Almay cosmetics (the blond putting on her makeup in the Almay commercials.) My father is not doing well--no man I've known was more devoted to a woman than was my father to my mother. We've been in KY taking care of things, but are home now, and my main focus is getting my father moved here so that he will be with my husband and me. Otherwise, even according to his physician and the nursing home staff, he will die of a broken heart. These have been, by far, the most difficult 6 days of my life. Fortunately both my parents and I are rich beyond measure with friends, and the love extended to my father, my mother's family and me has been staggering. If anyone prays, or does something similar to prayer, and if you can, please remember my father. His anguish is so profound that it compares to nothing I've ever seen in real life or in film. Hope everyone is well. I am sleep-deprived to the point of near-psychosis and haven't checked email in a week. So if all or part of this makes no sense, I am not only running on fumes, but passed that point several days ago. Best to all, Aleda ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 10 Oct 2007 16:24:42 -0700 (PDT) From: Em Subject: 3 ring circus in my headphones NJC whoa~~~~~~ just got the Sennheiser 595's I'd written about last week, wondering if I should pop for them. The bad thing is :( now I friggen NOTICE the diff in the good and bad music files on my Mac.... many are, I realize...ummm, merde. the good thing is: whoa some of the good files are amazing!!!!! Steely Dan's "King of the World" was really like a little 3 ring circus in my head! it felt like someone was dental flossing my brain. Or it felt like my left brain was being coaxed out through my right ear and vice-versa. It was stimulating some stuff in my cranium. The guitar on there - which I know to be amazing anyway (not sure if that cut is Carlton or what) was just ALLLLLL over the place and I heard stuff I never heard before. doodle oodleoodleoddleooooooo!!! My old phones sounded pretty good too - were highly rated Sony's from like back in the late 80's.But these new ones are a nice treat. They do need a headphone amp tho... I read some reviews that say they need to break in for 40-50 hours, so I gotta figure out how to do that...just leave it playing all day or whatever. But that makes me nervous. thx for listening, Jonifolks, you all are my go-to people for most music stuff. The reason he's waited to be inducted into the R&R HOF is because he asked them specifically not to be considered until he could be inducted under his own name; he was eligible a few years ago but under the Cougar moniker. Love and Happiness from Whenever we Wanted and Paper in Fire from Lonesome Jubilee are two of my alltime favorite hits and he absolutely rocks the house with those. Scarecrow was an awesome record and probably one of my favorites then came Rough Harvest and I was a convert to this new sound he was exploring, the back-up singer (Janas Hoyt) on Rough Harvest has her own band, The MaryJanes and I've seen them perform live, they're excellent too. <<< Have never seen him live - hope to someday. >>> You're in for a real treat, Bob, he is one of those performers who is better live than in recorded form. His show is high energy and he is surrounded by relatively unknown yet quality musicians. On his next tour he has vowed to drop a few of the hits to play some of his newer material and I'm really looking forward to seeing him if he heads out west, I was spoiled with his frequency of midwest performances (I've seen him 23 times live). I picked up your signal loud and clear and it brought a smile to my war-weary face tonight. Just for that, since you don't like weak women, I will wish you a pleasant dreamland with Goldie and Samantha/Elizabeth and Eva and Ivory! Scarecrow is a great album for sure! Also, I checked out the tour schedule at Mellencamp.com and unfortunately, no southern dates on his upcoming tour. Perhaps next year? On a similiar but larger scale, David Sylvian is currently on a world tour with no U.S. dates....:( Alas, I suppose I'll have to catch him in Europe someday. Victor NP: Family Guy ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 11 Oct 2007 02:34:46 +0000 From: Patti Parlette Subject: sjc, Across the Universe -- Julie Taymor on Charlie Rose Bon soir encore une fois, Joniami(e)s: Bob's NP: U2 reminded me of this wonderful interview I caught late Monday night: Julie Taymor (director of the new film "Across the Universe") on Charlie Rose: http://www.charlierose.com/shows/2007/10/08/2/a-conversation-with-julie-taymor I never knew much about her, but Mark E. and others have been speaking highly of her, so this was very timely. Life is for learning on the JMDL, comme toujours. It's long (29 minutes), so if you don't have time for it all, I suggest watching the trailer (1:07 - 3:11) and the Bono part (8:16 - 9:24) where they show the clip of Bono playing a Ken Kesey part. It's psychedelic, man! I was really impressed with her passion and her creative determination, and her very expressive hands. She said the film is a rock opera. Joseph, I don't know what you will think of it, but I know already that I will love it. I just wish it would come to CT....none of my googling will give me a date. She said she she gave a private screening to Paul McCartney* (imaginez-vous!) and he liked it. I really like Charlie Rose's show. JMDL rumor has it that Joni is going to be on it. Of all the talk shows, I think this is the best one for her. I just don't see her with Letterman or Leno. She's got too much class for jokesters, imo. Can't you just picture her impossibly gentle hands, gesticulating with her cigarette, white smoke billowing and wafting up against that stark black background, and TALKING? (Charlie Rose let Sean Penn smoke when he was on.) Good things are happening in Joniland! Love, Patti P. * I don't think Paul was at last night's Imagine Peace Tower dedication. I went to http://imaginepeace.com/ and there is a video clip of Yoko and Ringo and Olivia getting off a yellow bus in Iceland, with children singing in the background (so lovely!) and it stops after a few seconds. MERDE! Is it just my computer, or does that happen for everyone? I am very frustrated over this.
