Dreams are a way of dealing with things that are in the subconcious - my take on the phrase is that dreaming of bad things, or potentially bad things, or things that are causing you stress, is how your brain resolves some of that stress. So naturally (in the great plan) bad dreams are good because they can help resolve some of those things. Also, a dream can be a kind of premonition - a warning that might deliver a changed outcome. Maybe someone who cares about you tells you that they had a dream that something bad happened as a result of an activity (or an inactivity) that involved you. By sharing that bad dream it may inform you or cause you to take a better path. Or...how many times have you had a bad dream and been relieved to awaken and find out that what you dreamt was not true? It makes you more appreciative of the joy. There isn't really any "story" behind the phrase, other than the desire of whoever came up with the metaphor to impress the listener with the outrageous price of something. Unfortunately, as is often the case, we have no way of knowing exactly who coined the phrase, although it hasn't been around as long as you might think. Surprisingly, the earliest known use of "cost an arm and a leg" in print dates back only to 1956, in Billie Holiday's autobiography "Lady Sings the Blues," in which she writes "Finally she found someone who sold her some stuff for an arm and a leg." It is unlikely that Billie Holiday herself coined the phrase, but she may well have popularized it with her book. If I had to guess at the inspiration for "cost and arm and a leg," I'd say that it was probably an outgrowth of the older phrase "I'd give my right arm for," meaning that the speaker would be willing to make a great sacrifice to obtain or do something, which dates back to the mid-19th century. "An arm and a leg" may simply have arisen as an attempt to top that already grisly level of sacrifice. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 9 Oct 2007 10:09:04 -0400 From: Bob.Muller@Fluor.com Subject: Re: BYT: An arm and a leg Reminds me of one of my fave one-liners: "I'd give my right arm to be ambidextrous". BYT has a few bars of strumming cut up into repeating loops. First off, no one is THAT regular in their strumming and secondly Joni's chops are gone, by her own admission. She maybe played for 15 minutes, enough to get the loops recorded and then they were strung together into the chord progression of the song. I'd swear that's how it was done, because I've had to do it myself for clients unable to get through a WHOLE song!! (Yes, this is what it's come to....no more direct-to-disk performances like the old days). It's also possible however that she found the loops in a loop library (3 different chords strummed over a calypso/one-drop groove--- quite available on DVD--in which case Joni didn't play at all.) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 09 Oct 2007 15:09:42 +0000 From: siquomb@comcast.net Subject: Re: USA Today Listen Up Now NJC Hey, thanks so much for that link, Craig, I have been discussing the "Pick of the Week": John Mellencamp's new video "Jena" with a group of friends, heatedly. You are an authority on history and the first person I would go to on questions of German history. The mention of Hitler's name even 60 years after his death raises hackles. I myself have Jewish ancestry and Hitler was none too fond of gays either. His concern was not even the same as Joni's. He wasn't concerned about the effect of sheer numbers of the delicate environment. The thought probably never crossed his mind. He was only concerned with giving people the answers he thought they wanted to hear in order to gain power. Feeding them the line that only certain types of people had a right to exist. I read it yesterday morning/noon time and after that, I couldn't write and my thinking was very troubled. I apologize for not replying sooner. This is a very important topic. It really is. Again, Joni, Marion, you, and many others here knocked some serious sense into me. And I'm not easily swayed. But, there comes a time for everything to change either for the worse or for the best. Again, I'm getting upset. How did this tragedy happen in Ireland? Another horrible cover-up with absolutely excuse--except another reason to find 'forgiveness' in our hearts? Why? I'd like to ask the Catholic religious leadership this question that some other Christian affiliations started with this tacky abbreviation on rings, keyholders, bracelets, necklaces, pins, bookmarks, hairpins, blah, blah, blah, etc, etc., etc. WWJD? "what would Jesus do?" (I cringe when I see this abbreviated question on anything) But, suppose during Jesus' time here on earth, some of the friends of one of his twelve disciples affiliated with spreading the 'The Word,' around were doing the exact same things as some of the naughty clergy are doing during these most troubling times. Do they actually think (or can they actually think?) Jesus would have allowed these pedophile swine be part of his people? Would he have continued to allow this bad behavior by the his so called disciples and just cover it up and say, "Forgive, forgive, forgive," over and over and over, just for this atrocious behavior to continue on over and over and over? When would he say, "Enough is enough," and hand them over to justice. He said something along these lines concerning hurting a child, "Woe to you who hurts one of the innocent little ones, because it would be better to tie yourself to a millstone and throw yourself into the sea than to see what awaits you for commiting such an atrocity." I'm very troubled. I couldn't think straight yesterday all day and I went to bed troubled and I must keep this minimal, otherwise I'll go through another day of sorrow and confusion and crying and anger. I wrote you, Anita, twice, but I could not send them. I was quite disoriented with all these new questions in my head that kept making me think of answers only to come up with another question. I saved them as drafts. I'll try to find a way to put it all together and from there, search within myself for answers. Can you talk about what happened? If you can't, I more than understand. The only beautiful outcome of all this as of yet is that you went on retreat with the Buddhist and Catholic nuns. That's the level where I'm at now. Also, that I'm questioning myself more than deeply--I'm digging and it's extreme, but long overdue. Pope John Paul's personality kept me here and I love him dearly, still. He was also very troubled. Have you read Thomas Merton? His way of thinking has led me into another realm of the truth and beauty of within Catholicism, but things would have to change completely. I still question Merton's strange death in Bangkok. If this continues, it'll only be a pretty pig stye up there at the Vatican. The stance the Vatican takes is consersative and it's stuck in medievel times. And how much do I have to give and give and give and help and help and help before the leadership of the Church starts to do the same without asking for more and more and more money? How can I be part of something that allows these wolves dressed in sheep's clothing to be amongst the flock, roaming around like hard-up snakes in the grass? Under circumstances like these, how many times must I forgive? These are questions I wish Thomas Merton or Anthony DeMello could have answered for me. I'll find my way. Anita, last year I had an encounter with some Catholic and Buddhist nuns at the Cathedral in Acapulco. They were on a spiritual journey as I was on a spiritual journey, returning, after I did some volunteer worh with a newer order, only to be disheartened again by some Catholic clergy over there and now, again. Well, I must go now. Anita, say a little prayer for me, please---the way the Buddhist and Catholic nuns showed you how. The rosary is another chant that helps me immensely, only I chant my way, the way Fr. Delaney taught me, not the shallow way those awful ppeople say it, otherwise they wouldn't be doing what they're doing--they don't know what a real chant is with the true breath of life running throughout the body in harmony with the rythym of the Universe. jeannie Anita Tedder wrote: Jeannie (JMDL316 Re; Out of the Fire Like Catholic Saints)wrote: I'm a cradle catholic, and I would defend my true faith with my life, but I would never, ever in a gazillion years, in blind devotional allegience, defend the church's prime time crimes and hypocritical, selective stances of what constitutes a sin, when those sins are committed by certain clergy, the pedophile priests. I recently wrote about meeting a Catholic nun who I visited regarding my being overwhelmed by my rage with the Catholic church for the torture and abuse of young children in their care in Ireland and the unfortunate death of someone I knew as a consequence. She invited me to a (mainly silent) retreat which I have just returned from today and was led by the Catholic sister and two Buddhist nuns. The programme alternated between the 5 services a day of the Benedictine order and chanting and meditation with the nuns none of which were compulsory. The compassion and acceptance of the Buddhist and Catholics nuns towards each other and, beyond all else, their acceptance also of their differences was truly wonderful to witness and be a part of. The nuns of both faiths were finding their own iunique way with (as Joni puts it on Bad Dreams) buckets of grace, empathy and gratitude So when I read my digest: Marion (JMDL 318) It's just that I still feel some bad vibrations from the really bad exchange of words I had with a list member a couple of weeks ago, and I wouldn't ever want to be drawn into anything like that again. I love this list, and I do enjoy Monika's postings -- she is the last person I would want to feel upset about. So this misunderstanding made me sad but it's all cleared up now. Let's all shine on! Love, Marion I was most heartened. Joni is right about the Catholic church having prisons. They did (and maybe still do). Jeannie, a Catholic, does not collude this. Many other faiths have prisons. If,as Marion says, we can work towards clearing up differences and, as Jeannie says, not defend the undefendable maybe then we can find grace, empathy and gratitude when we are irritated and struggle with each others differences on this list. She said, "I think the girl at the counter started it." She asked the young girl working the counter for some foamy-confection-fun-decaf-lattes the girls like, along with a Joni cd. Well, she said the girl got wide-eyed and enthusiastic and asked her if she had ever heard of Joni before and went on comparing Shine's more subtle style in comparison to her previous works. She spoke highly of Joni, the artist, and said she felt she was her #1 fan and that she knew all of Joni's works and other things. My sister told me, "I think she knows more than you." I was taken aback. I call her, 'Baby.' I said, "Baby, how can that be? You're telling me that after all of these years, a newer fan can know and feel Joni's music more than me?" She answered with, "I may be exaggerating a bit, but by the time she's your age, with the way she's describing Joni's music, she may know more than you." I said, "NO WAY!!" We laughed. I said, "I need to go meet this chick, so we can talk Joni! Tell her." She told the girl about me afterwards and later that evening called me to tell me the girl is looking forward to the meeting. I shall go to meet another one of Joni's #1 fans. Besides, I also need another copy of Shine. Somehow, it got a few scratches which skip on my bedroom cd player in at my apartment. I don't go there often because of my responsibilties with the rescue animals and I need my mother's backyard. But, anyway, it's a bothersome thought knowing it may skip whenever I go there to be alone. Plus, another reason is, a precious, jet black puppy, part Scottish Terrier, part Poodle, chewed up and tore some pages off the CD's booklet, last night, after I left it on the sofa. My fault. I got upset for about three seconds, then I look at his little cute face and I melt. I can't stay angry with Gigolo, even though he's more rowdier than Rowdy Yates, and more than a handful all day long and stubborn to get housebrtoken since he was left 24-7 in a mangy kennel with no human touch when I rescued the litter and it was awful--it's hard to house break them when they're left in cages like that. I just don't get the things people do sometimes to animals. Another grand heartbreaker. I do put Shine on for the dogs and cats when we come outside and they lay themselves down and I'm sure, listen, and possibly enjoy because they certainly mellow out. I think they also like Warren Zevon, alot, because they run outside once they hear his voice! I can't download Joni's music, either. It feels fake. I don't know why. Maybe I need to see her CD artwork, also, to let Joni feel like Joni has always felt for me. jeannie PS: My teenage nieces love most songs on Shine. Each of the three girls have their preferences. They may have downloaded some copies to take to school even though I told my sister to buy each girl their own copy, but they're not going to tell me. They download a lot and bring me all types of music and I can't find the time to listen to so many cds piling up. I don't have the heart to tell them. motitan@aol.com wrote: ? I only went to Starbucks for about an hour.? When I came in they were playing the end of "Shine", then "If," and then went to Woodstock.? I thought at 11 AM they were just going to replay Shine but continued playing older Joni, which although I love, wasn't what I went there for.? I did stay for an hour as I said but could no longer wait?as I was anxious to hear the new album.? - -Mon - -----Original Message----- From: Patti Parlette To: joni@smoe.org Sent: Mon, 8 Oct 2007 9:37 pm Subject: Answer me, my loves So am I the only Joni nutcase who sat through the entire three hours of Joni in Starbucks on September 25th? I don't recall reading about anyone else doing that, but maybe I missed it. I still have to finish my report on the experience, but could use a support group in the meantime....some "pioneers Those seekers of mental health..." It was INTENSE. Thirty-nine years of Joni in three hours. Imaginez-vous! Love, Patti P. P.S. One more friendly reminder to go to http://imaginepeace.com/ for John Lennon's b/day tomorrow and the Imagine Peace Tower. Let that big light shine! Shine, shine, shine. And there is a brand new message from my soul sister Cindy. _________________________________________________________________ Help yourself to FREE treats served up daily at the Messenger Cafi. (njc) Just heard Stevie Wonder will be doing a November 1 show at Phillips Arena since the Chastain show sold out so quickly. Tickets will be $97,77, and 47. I'm totally on the fence about it as I just saw him and it was such an amazing night...I don't know if this show would duplicate that or if it would detract as I'm still totally feeling the high from Chastain. Since there has been some talk about Herbie's tribute album, I've got a question for you folks who keep up with all the Joni tributes.? Would you say this latest release is your favorite Joni covers collection?? I've read nothing but good reviews overall (with you know, a few minor objections at a singer or two). ? Also, I recently read an article citing that the top three artists who are most covered are the Beatles, Bob Dylan, and Neil Young.? Where do you think Joni would fit in?? Bob?? Do you have an answer for me or a stipulation I suppose? - -Monika ________________________________________________________________________ Email and AIM finally together.
