But doesn't each store pay the distributor a set amount, and then set their own sale price based on their own bottom line? So in that case, the only thing affected by the sale price would be the store's profit margin. Incidentally, I did buy mine at Starbucks because I was there....I think it came to a difference of $3 dollars or so. In any case, I'm more concerned about my own bank account than Joni's. Fortunately for Joni though, I don't think there are too many bootleg Shine cd's being sold on the streets....a scenario where Joni and the record company both make $0. Was wondering what it sounded like when Jaco P used to play drums before he injured his left hand....must have been kinky I bet. Also on one cut there is a synthesizer that to my mind BEGGED to have been re-done in kalimba. So this thing still has a bit of a demo sound to it. Like a thing or 2 could have been further fleshed out. But again, I'm left with the feeling that, look, she's REJECTING Hollywood here....thats part of the point - so if she doesn't want to even visit the special effects dept or deal with that...then let it be. I know as a painter sometimes you have to do that. Have one last look over your shoulder, heave a sigh and walk away. Because your work is done. :) Em ps: fell asleep thinking of the song "Shine" last night...I think what she does here is take us flying. I was thinking of that rough sketch of Neil Young's of the winged thing, on the Zuma album cover. Imagined that was Joni, or maybe Joni as a mama condor - and we could swoop around with her perhaps as mites on her back in her feathers. And we had to see some awful sights, but then she'd go ahead and fly us somewhere clear and clean and lovely, too. Like in "Blade Runner" towards the end when they fly north to Canada, and all of a sudden they are in sunlight and over greenery, etc.. - --- "Ross, Les" wrote: > ...and someone the other day quoted from somewhere that joni enjoyed > the > ability to control and manipulate these drum sounds. I think it would be vastly improved by the use of "real" instruments (I think I suggested mariachi band earlier and I stick by that); however, it would have been out of place with the sound of the rest of the album. She has a couple of "movie" songs interspersed in the middle of the CD. I see them as kind of musical/cinematic interludes. Myrtle apparently said, "You've seen too many movies, Joni. Snap out of it!" I think Joni watches mostly the news on TV, and I guess she also watches old movies. "Shine" is all about the news (mostly bad), with a couple of old movies thrown in as a bit of a break, but they do tie the theme together. I started writing something longer about this whole thing, but I just got too tired and I'm posting far too much anyway. Maybe later. I haven't listened to "Shine" enough yet to figure out which ones I'm more likely to skip, but I'm guessing "BYT" is going to be one, just because I've heard that song SO many times. Arrgh. I'm with you on "If". In this case, Joni's changing the words and her music do improve the original. Things that do bug me, but these are Joni-trademarks and not worth fighting over: - - her repetition of the word "IF..." before she starts each verse. I hate it when Joni does that stuff and the short i sound is an icky sound in vocal music anyway. - - similarly, her repetition of "Hana" in, um, "Hana". I just hate that stuff, but it's her music, and maybe it's just me. Sometimes it's a piano bit, sometimes a guitar intro, sometimes it's something in the lyrics that recalls something she has said years before. I definitely heard the "Sex Kills" guitar intro on "If" right from the start and more emerges on each listen. And I'm just loving the song "Shine" more on each listen. It's like a litany. When I die, I want this song played at my funeral. The woman is such a genius, and so many of the critics just don't get it. It's like a stripped-down synopsis of her words and music over her entire body of work, with lyrics that look pessimistic on paper but are hopeful when combined with the voice and music. Its physical characteristics - rising time, path across the sky - are similar to those of the Hunter's moon....... It is claimed by some that the Harvest Moon seems to be somehow bigger or brighter or yellower in color than other full moons. This is an illusion. The yellow or golden or orangish or reddish color of the moon shortly after it rises is a physical effect, which stems from the fact that, when you see the moon low in the sky, you are looking at it through a greater amount of atmosphere than when the moon is overhead. The atmosphere scatters the bluish component of white moonlight (which is really reflected sunlight) but allows the reddish component of the light to travel a straighter path to your eyes. Hence all moons (and stars and planets) look reddish when they are low in the sky. As for the large size of a full moon when seen low in the sky, it is true that the human eye sees a low hanging moon as being larger than one that rides high in the sky. This is known as a Moon Illusion and can be seen with any full moon." That from: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harvest_moon There's a picture of the moon, too. Beware of the power of moons! On the lyrics page, typing in "moon", there are 30 or so Joni songs that pop up. It's the judgement of the moon and stars. And there is that old song: "Shine on, shine on harvest moon..." First verse The night was mighty dark so you could hardly see, For the moon refused to shine. Couple sitting underneath a willow tree, For love they did pine. Little maid was kinda 'fraid of darkness So she said, "I guess I'll go." Boy began to sigh, looked up at the sky, And told the moon his little tale of woe [edit]Chorus Oh, Shine on, shine on, harvest moon Up in the sky; I ain't had no lovin' Since January, February, June or July. Snow time ain't no time to stay Outdoors and spoon; Shine on, shine on, harvest moon, For me and my gal. [edit]Second verse I can't see why a boy should sigh, When by his side is the girl he loves so true, All he has to say is: "Won't you be my bride, For I love you, I can't see why I'm telling you this secret, When I know that you can guess." Harvest moon will smile, Shine on all the while, If the little girl should answer "yes." Reminds of that man and a woman sitting on a rock, they're either going to thaw out or freeze.... And we all shine on, like the moon and the stars and the sun..... The point is that Joni's musical compositions, even without their corresponding lyrics, are things of complexity and immense beauty. Most musicians and especially those in the jazz realm appreciate that fact and celebrate them in that manner. It's a tremendous compliment to Joni's musical talents. If it's instrumental interpretations of Joni's songs that make you angry in the times we live in - you, my friend, have an easy life indeed. Not me. Well, it's point of view but for me, the first and most enduring 'in' to joni's work is the music. The lyrics, which for the most part are appreciated for being at the very least better than the average, get to me eventually. So, I can totally see what draws a musician to her music. Actually, if I may move myself a little further out onto this 'limb' I'd go so far as to say that Joni's music is the main draw for me. The thing that gives me the chills, the thing that gets under my skin and feeds my soul. And there you have it. I don't know but I can tell you when I saw Jason Marsalis and also our own David Lahm perform at PazFest 2000 they totally blew me away with their instrumental versions of joni songs. Jazz, as a genre, is largely instrumental interpretations of songs...and a good number of them have good or possibly great lyrics, as is the case with Joni. Of course there are mindless, muzak sounding arrangements as well which I have no use for, and of course everything in between. I'm not familiar with the versions you're speaking of. Anyhow, I understand where you're coming from. I think Joni's words are fantastic and as both Joni and Bob Dylan said, "the words are just as important as the music." However, you've got to remember these are covers and just like any other Joni covers there will be those you like and those you don't. Don't fret. There's always the original or another cover with words! I do think it is quite a compliment to Joni as a musician to focus on her music. She's identified very much with her lyrics that sometimes it seems the music takes a background (as far as her reputation goes among the masses). It's good to know some can see the originality and absolute brilliance in her music as well. - -Monika ************************************** See what's new at http://www.aol.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 27 Sep 2007 11:47:28 EDT From: Motitan@aol.com Subject: Big Yellow Taxi 2007, yay or nay? In fact, I actually like this one better than the original studio one from 1970. I'll skip it because I don't really like the song BYT in general. I won't lie though. I do like the MOA version of it (and can handle it live) but generally speaking, ever since I heard BYT I have not liked it. Joni's done far better than this song and sometimes I wish everyone could get past BYT and look more into her work and find the magic there. - -Monika ************************************** See what's new at http://www.aol.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 27 Sep 2007 11:29:41 -0400 (EDT) From: Catherine McKay Subject: Re: shine Joni's grandchildren - the children of Kilauren, once known as Kelly "Little" Green. Mirroring Starbucks' "play Joni between 11 and 3", we as a group could inform Starbucks that on a certain date all list members will buy a Starbucks product between, say, 9 and 12, and say to the baristas (that is what the employees are called, isn't it?) "This one's for Joni Mitchell". Nothing says "Thanks" to a corporation better than a bump in sales. Chaka Khan will play Sofia opposite BeBe Winans' Harpo. Chaka's highly anticipated new album, "Funk This" was released yesterday, September 25 and BeBe's new album, "Cherch" will be released October 30. LaKisha Jones will play the Church Soloist, who opens the show with the rousing gospel number "Mysterious Ways" at all evening performances, and Sofia at all matinee performances. Jones' first performance will be December 19, 2007, and will play the Church Soloist at all performances through January 6, 2008. The Color Purple will begin its third year on Broadway November 1, 2007. Chaka Khan celebrates her 35th anniversary in the business making her Broadway debut as Sofia in The Color Purple. Chaka formed her first singing group when she was 11, at 20 she was the singer for R&B, soul and funk band "Rufus," and five years later became a breakout solo artist. Known for a catalog of classic hits: "Tell Me Something Good," "Sweet Thing," "Once You Get Started," "Everlasting Love," "Do You Love What You Feel," "Ain't Nobody," "I'm Every Woman," "I Feel For You," "Through The Fire," "Clouds", "I'll Be Good To You", and "Whatcha Gonna Do For Me," Chaka has worked in practically every genre of music from pop, R&B, rock, disco, world music and fusion to jazz, rap, hip-hop, and classical working with a diverse list of distinguished collaborators. The eight-time Grammy winner has just released her newest album, "Funk This," an extensive Khan catalog of close to a dozen solo albums, spanning almost twenty years of recording. Chaka Khan truly claims the title 'renaissance woman' with her work as an author, humanitarian and philanthropist. Her autobiography, "Through The Fire," was acclaimed for its soul-bearing candor and honesty, and her commitment to women and children at risk is seen through her countless hours of dedication to the Chaka Khan Foundation. Formed in 1999, the Foundations' initiative has involved a partnership with the Los Angeles Unified School district mentoring 5th and 6th grade students who are college-bound. Chaka Khan is the winner of London's Best Actress Capitol Radio Listener's Poll Award for Mama, I Want to Sing, Soul Train's Lena Horne Lady of Soul Career Achievement Award, BET's Lifetime Achievement Award, and a Diamond Life Award of Excellence from the International Association of African-American Music. Chaka is also responsible for her own line of chocolates, "Chakalates," and the guiding force behind her own Earthsong record label. Benjamin "BeBe" Winans hails from the legendary Winans family, known as the first family of gospel music. Winans is known as the groundbreaking inspirational, R&B, and Gospel vocalist, songwriter, and producer, who has won four Grammy Awards, ten Dove Awards, six Stellar Awards, two NAACP Awards and a Soul Train Award. A multi-faceted artist, BeBe not only has a successful recording career, but also hosts a highly successful syndicated radio show. BeBe began his music career as a background singer for his famous brothers (The Winans). In 1987, he partnered with his sister CeCe, and formed one of the most successful gospel groups in history. The dynamic duo amassed an amazing run of hit songs and released the platinum-selling albums "Heaven" and "I'm Lost Without You," and also scored a plethora of number one hit singles including "Addictive Love" and "I'll Take You There." BeBe and CeCe have not only had great success on gospel play lists, but their music has been and still is in heavy rotation on R&B radio as well. His fifth solo album "Cherch," will be released October 30 on his own label, The Movement Group (TMG). The soulful tenor co-produced and arranged all fourteen album tracks and he put his writing cap on for three songs including the first single, "No Sir." BeBe has also recorded songs with such entertainers as Stevie Wonder, Brian McKnight and Whitney Houston, and his nearly four-year-old nationally syndicated radio gospel show, The BeBe Winans Radio Show, has given him the opportunity to interview such artists as Chaka Kahn and Oprah Winfrey. As an actor, BeBe appeared in 2003's The Manchurian Candidate. BeBe's next project, BET's "Sunday's Best," premieres October 2, 2007. "Sunday's Best" is a gospel version of "American Idol" where BeBe will serve as one of the judges. LaKisha Jones began singing at the Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church at age five. She was formally trained in classical music, but favored singing gospel music. Jones graduated in 1998 and attended the University of Michigan-Flint, majoring in music. A single mother, her four year old daughter Brionne encouraged her to try-out for "American Idol" where she went on to be one of the final four contestants in the 2007 season of the hit show. Jones is currently touring with American Idols Live. LaKisha is working on her first album. Beginning its 3rd smash year on Broadway, The Color Purple recouped its entire $11 million investment in less than a year. The Color Purple's first North American Tour kicked off in Chicago on April 17, 2007 at The Cadillac Palace Theatre where it plays through September 30. The tour will then continue on to San Francisco, Los Angeles, Tempe, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Baltimore and Philadelphia. The performance schedule for The Color Purple is: Wednesday through Saturday at 8PM; Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday at 2PM; Sunday at 7:30PM. Tickets for The Color Purple can be purchased via Telecharge.com/ (212) 239-6200 or at The Broadway Theatre Box Office.
