[Michael Paz ] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Wed, 26 Sep 2007 00:03:07 -0700 From: JILL A HAAS Subject: J-day in Seattle, Home of *$s Hello my friends, and sorry if you got my previous message w/ no subject line. It's late, and I almost just spelled "previous" as "pervious." Oy. J-day is coming to a close, and I'm still Joni-jonesing. I went to the Starbucks near work the day before J-day to ask if they would be "participating," and after some questions hollered to the manager in the back room, they said, yeh, I guess so... I couldn't be there at 11am today, but I hit it at the crack of noon. They had the CD on the counter, but when I walked in, I could barely hear the music. I asked if they were playing Joni Mitchell, and pointed at the sign that announced they would be doing just that. Again, blank stares, and finally the manager, from the back room came out and said, "I think so." I found a quiet spot in the place, and indeed, I heard...something shining...I swooped down on it like a black crow. Bought my copy, but couldn't listen to it until I left work. Started to love it then. After I got home, I decided that I needed to take a drive and hear some more. My car is the best place to listen. I loved it more already...it grows on you fast. I can't wait for my morning commute. So far, like someone else said, I keep hearing the words, "If I had a heart, I'd cry," in my head. "Shine" and "If" are also my first favorites, but I know from experience that my initial faves may not end up being my long-time faves. It was a great thing to know that Jonilistas everywhere were scrambling for their chance to "Shine," and it's great to hear all of your stories. I was able to share my own little bit of joy with one person at work who thinks Joni is one of the greatest singer/songwiters of our time (fancy that!!!), and another woman who loves dance and loved the photos. BTY, I think the production of the CD is top rate. Makes me want to go see the ballet, and contibutes to the hopefulness/irrationality of the CD's theme. And so, we all SHINE on, like the moon and the stars and the sun... Yours on this special day, Jill Haas Seattle ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Sep 2007 09:04:24 +0100 From: "Anita Tedder" Subject: Starbuck lunch I think I'll recant my 'I'd go to starbucks and buy a frothy thing because they're playing and supporting Joni' - sounds like it was a bit of a let down for most of you going to lunch and listen to 'Shine'. Last chance lost! Shame. Anita ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Sep 2007 08:51:51 +0100 From: "Anita Tedder" Subject: Thanks I have been quite overwhelmed by the kindness that has come down the line to me this past day. And on the day marked by the release of 'Shine'. Thank you all so very much for taking the time to write. It's been so helpful. And I have been thinking, gosh, how I would have LOVED to have gone to my local Starbucks and heard some Joni. I might even have bought one of their over priced frothy things! I looked again at the you tube clip, and found Joni uttering some more words that have seemed to struck such a chord (one with a unique tuning, of course :~)) with me. It's when she says 'Rationally, I have no hope. Irrationally, I believe in miracles." Good words to hang on to, I think. Lovely to be back and thank you all again for such kindness, Anita ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Sep 2007 04:25:04 -0400 From: Janet Hess Subject: Leave comments on the Starbucks website (NJC, sorta) I for one came home from my Starbucks and left a message on their web site. "Customer service" has heard about the Cleveland Park (DC) Starbucks, where I have spent many, many bucks since they opened in the 90s. They've been displaying the Joni poster for a long time, promising All Joni and samples and general good cheer between 11:00 and 2:00. When I showed up, what was there? Nada. They explained to me that their "player" was broken (although they were playing nonJoni music throughout the store at the time) and, after searching, reported that they had no copies of "Shine." Although the Starbucks employee may not have looked that hard, because he asked me if I wanted to buy a copy before he went to look (and I'd already preordered). Good thing that I wasn't relying on them. I explained in my comments to Customer Service that I felt like the only grownup in their store, and I suggested that perhaps that might not be what they want to project to customers and potential customers. I also mentioned that I've spent many hundreds of dollars at that *$ in the last year (because I registered my Starbucks cards on the web, they can easily verify that) and that I am now looking for a business that would appreciate my money. I also mentioned the JMDL and how it is that folks from around the US and Canada have been reporting in their experiences between 11:00 and 2:00. I mentioned that *$ has been rightfully proud to have signed Joni Mitchell, and that they have sorely disappointed at least one formerly loyal customer who is not eager to enter *$ again. I'll let you know what response (if any) I get. Other folks might want to consider leaving messages as well. Mine was polite but firm and clearly articulated my disappointment in their failure to provide what they had been touting. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Sep 2007 09:26:19 +0100 From: "Ross, Les" Subject: Shine i love this record. a massive relief to be denied the VG8 thingy clanking along in and about the songs. and instead we get piano. lovely piano. and her voice and sung melodies. i fall apart, every time.... anyone else catch a chill on first listen to Hana and Iguana? that DED dread with the crashy crashy synths'n'drumsim. but i really like them both. Provoked out of a five-year musical retirement by the sideshow 'war against terror' while the world overboils, Joni Mitchell delivers a counter-intuitive, brilliant artistic response: she bestows upon our suicidal folly the blessing of serenity. Even her trademark suspended chords of doubt and inquiry enrich the reverie of long lyrical piano- led melody lines; her voice, partially restored to its full range by physical therapy, is never raised. And so you listen when you might otherwise turn off a tour -de-force title song which itemises humanity's irretrievably overdrawn account with a loving beauty that accepts it all without fear or rage. No less hushed and hallowed, If I Had a Heart, Bad Dreams are Good and Strong and Wrong also conjure the bitterest heresy that perhaps we as a species cannot but perish by our own grasping hands, so let us at least go to our doom gracefully. And Joni being Joni, among the 10 songs here she pointedly revisits her skittish Eco-dystopia of 1970, Big Yellow Taxi: you can't say she never warned us. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Sep 2007 06:43:54 -0400 From: "Marianne Rizzo" Subject: "Shine" - the packaging - I love it! >And wouldn't it be great to have a ballet dancer's >bum? She paints, she makes films, she studies philosophy and comparitive religions, she even produced a ballet and she is always concerned about the state of the world. But most of all, her writing is incredible.> > Joni lovers of the world unite !> > Michael in Quebec (in Paris with Laurent) > _________________________________________________________________> Invite your mail contacts to join your friends list with Windows Live Spaces. I hope she does do some one-off performances here and there (HERE would be nice!) but I'd hate to see her associated with the travesty that is the Grammy Awards. And the Shine song playing in my head - "If I Had A Heart", one of her best melodies in a long time, but oh that cheesy drum machine is yucky. The ONLY thing about this CD that I don't like. She > sounds so incredibly focussed and hoping against hope > Hi Catherine, Definitely. This whole album strikes me with hope. Shine and If are such a great way to end the album. This album really holds together. Only the best for Joni's grandchildren. This album is perhaps her finest in my opinion. It has all of her great musical talent and now her maturity. I think as I grow older listening to it, I'll increasingly appreciate it. It's already happening more and more with each listen. I love the way she starts BYT with the word "So." And then in Shine there's the temporary nature of our paving of paradise that comes to light for me with the words, "Shine on fertile farmland, Buried under subdivisions," which gives me the image of the sun eventually shining on that land again. Eventually the buildings will crumble and the pavement will crack with the powerful force of the tiny blades of grass growing up through it. My kids just came in here where I'm listening to Shine. They have been singing some of it already, picking up more quickly on it than I am. Hope. My girlfriend has just recently experienced the purchasing of a new Joni album with me. We were in L.A. this last weekend and because of American Airlines basically making us feel like it was our fault they canceled our flight we didn't land back in Austin till late Monday night. My mail gets delivered here pretty early and when the CD didn't arrive in the mail......well here is our conversation from last night. Laura: "you like the new Joni CD?" Happy: "yes, very much, listened to it a few times today." Laura: "what time did your mail come?" Happy: "didn't come in the mail." Laura: "did you go buy it then?" Happy: "yeah, on ITunes and then burned a copy so I could listen to it on my way to Starbuck's." Laura: "you don't go to Starbuck's?" Happy: "I know but I wanted to pick up a copy of the CD and I know they would have it at one of the 8 starbucks stores in a two mile radius of my house." (okay I didn't say the 8 stores thing just embellishing the conversation). Laura: "So you cancelled your Amazon order?" Happy: "Why would I do that?" Laura: "well you bought the mp3's then you bought a hard copy...what's the copy from Amazon for? Happy: "I won't open the package this time, what's up with the questions." Laura: "I won't question how you spend you money." Happy: "it's a minor addiction...why don't you go to an Al-Anon meeting tomorrow." So i'm sitting here listening to "Shine" through the computer speaker drinking my morning coffee reading the lyrics off the store bought copy and waiting for the mail to come with my unopened copy of the CD that comes also with the Herbie Hancock party favor CD, Iron & Wine, Ani's Canon and other assorted. Only to be castigated for his/her misspellings by "long-time Joni fans". I was hoping to read some of the JMDLers' review in amazon. There really is a group of people out there who is not aboard the JMDL who are big big fans of Joni. It would be great to hear their personal stories and how they encountered Joni if they ever hop aboard the Joni train. I got an email from a good friend/DJ late last night who asked me what I think of Shine - the album. He met Joni in Bel Air late last year in a resto. He just finished lunch and was standing outside the resto. He said he saw a lady come and knew right away that it was Joni who joined him in that same smoke-space. She asked him if he has a cigarette. My friend no longer smokes (or claims he doesn't) but not wishing to let go of the opportunity to speak to Joni, ran to the table where his friends still were lunching. Asked a cigarette from one and gave it to Joni. For the 10-15 minutes that they spoke, he said they never talked about music at all. Just about LA, the weather and other day-to-day concerns. I so envy him. But then I would probably be tongue-tied when I am in Joni's company. By the time I got to Starbucks #5, near home, the sky had cleared, so I pulled in. It's very small, but I knew they carried music. Still, I was a bit worried, based on stories I had already seen here. As I walked in, I was greeted by Joni's beautiful smile. They were not playing Joni, but she was prominently on display. The people there were all nice (I agree with those who say it's not fair to expect them to all be big Joni fans), and while they asked if I wanted anything else, they didn't seem bothered that I did not. I've played Shine twice. It seems to me that it takes off where TTT ended, moving forward musically, but having some similarities. Lyrically, I prefer her relationship songs, but she needs to write about what inspired her, so the political lyrics it is. I won't pretend that I think this is among her all-time best, but it's very good and I'm real happy with it. I prefer the slower tempo material. So far: love: One Week Last Summer, Bad Dreams like and may still love: If I Had a Heat, Strong and Wrong, Shine, If not yet anyway: This Place, Hana, Night of the Iguana fine, but I'm not sure what it's doing here (beyond the lyrics fitting and that it will probably help sales): BYT Michael Flaherty - --------------------------------- Looking for a deal?
