Bless Joni, or her creative director, for creating a CD package with a type-face and font that is legible! the little booklet with lyrics is wonderful - even though it's white type on a black background, the font size is excellent. Even with my horrible eyesight, I can read this without any problem. Little things mean a lot - someone was either very lucky in their design, or thought of this. One of my main beefs with CDs in general is that the printed material you get in most of them is completely unreadable, often in a tiny and very faint font, not to mention the ones that decide to get cute and run the type all the way across the package, or around in circles, so that it drives your eyes crazy. Well, it's a beautiful day here in Denver, CO. SunSHINE, blue skies, pleasant! I just walked down to the nearest Starbucks to pick up Joni's CD. The buying experience was nothing special, except that I think the guys working there were a little surprised I didn't come in to buy coffee. I think they just don't "get" people who don't drink coffee, of course most people who walk into that place are probably there for the coffee, so that makes sense. Anyhow, I walked out with my new disc, and while heading back to my place, I took the plastic off and looked through the liner notes. Glad the lyrics are in there... and the photos from the ballet are nice. I walked inside my place, thinking "how cool - I finally get to see what it's like to bring home a brand new Joni Mitchell album -- everything else was released long before I knew much about her music..." Anyway, just listened to the 2 songs so far - I'll have to give the album several listens before I can form an opinion... Hi Ya'll, I did some more Shine shopping this afternoon, and the two Starbucks I went into didn't even have it out. I asked for it in the first Starbucks, and the guy said the date for it to come out hasn't happened yet, and then he looked at the computer screen and said...oh no! it's today! So he thanked me for asking and brought it out immediately. He talked about Joni's ballet as he was unwrapping the CD display thingy, and when I asked how he knew about the ballet, he said they have a video the employees watch to educated them about the CD's they sell. He was a young guy, late teens or early twenties. Impressive. I asked him to play it overhead, and he said sure. When he turned it on, "Impossible Dreamer" started playing. It was nice to hear, but I had to wonder where was Shine? Maybe they have a Joni composite for playing overhead or something. The next Starbucks didn't have it out either so I asked where the hell is it? (More southern kindly though hell was on my mind.) First they said it was on the display carousel, but I knew it wasn't because I'd already looked. I said isn't it supposed to be out on the counter in it's own display? Then they said it hadn't come to them yet. I have to wonder if they just hadn't opened it in back. Whatever the Starbucks sales talleys are, things like might be happening in other Starbucks too and skew the numbers. Two out of three today didn't have it out. Best Buy here didn't have it except online. I did find it at another central Arkansas Walmart I visited. It was out in the normal Joni area of the contemporary music rack. They guy indicated it wasn't on the new release rack because they only had 3 copies. When I left they only had 2. I brought one to my sister-in-law who owns and art gallery. The Starbucks I go to always has their new music out and is pretty good about promoting it. In general though, Bob's right, you can't really blame the baristas too much for not knowing much about the whole Joni thing. I can't tell you how many times, when I worked at Whole Foods, I'd come in, there would be some new promotion or change, which of course no one had told me about, and I wouldn't know what was going on till I asked someone. On a completely different topic, I can't stand that Pepsi commercial where the people are yawning/singing and then some guy screams for them to wake up. For some reason, it really grates on my nerves. I don't even like Pepsi. There were ten or so in a little carrier all their own. I took the first one, glaring at the opening left and thought to myself that I should ask them to take out the drivel they were playing and play it, and pulled out my checkbook. The bespectacled guy looked at me and asked 'don't you want any coffee?' "No', I said. "I don't drink coffee. Well, would you like a roll (or something to that effect) instead?" I said 'no, I don't want anything else, I came in here strictly for this cd." He looked at me like I was from Mars. I didn't care as I paid and wheeled to leave, thinking to myself 'he doesn't get it.' I then thought of turning around and exhorting him to try it and try to 'get it.' I realized it was probably hopeless and lazily did not. mack ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Sep 2007 02:33:55 +0200 (CEST) From: Joseph Palis Subject: RE : Re: Shine Joni seems to be everywhere especially in the 24 little hours of Sept 25 in the US. Although I didn't have time to visit Starbucks along Franklin Street nor Borders. But I got a taste of Joni's Shine just the same in Offbeat Music -- a local and indie record store in Durham. The woman who is manning the place was playing Joni's "Shine" when me and a friend walked in. BYT was playing and a guy remarked to his friend in another aisle that that song is Joni and that she seems to be in pretty good voice at her age. A inward smile from me. Then "Night of the Iguana" came next -- which I like a lot after this first listen. Other albums in their "New Discs" corner include Me'shell Ndegeocello, Herbie's Joni Letters, Nellie McKay, Bembeya Jazz National . . . They all look purty nice altogether. Didn't buy "Shine" yet. Its time will come for me for sure. Joseph in Chapel Hill np: hum of the printer printing scads of papers in the library - --------------------------------- Ne gardez plus qu'une seule adresse mail ! However, the Starbucks that was just built in Statesboro had Shine--lots of copies right at the register, so what the hell, I bought a copy this morning on my way to work. My partner Becky likes Joni, so I'll give it to her for her home office. - -----Original Message----- From: owner-joni@smoe.org [mailto:owner-joni@smoe.org] On Behalf Of Bob Muller Sent: Tuesday, September 25, 2007 7:33 PM To: JMDL Subject: Herbie's bonus tracks What Cassy didn't tell you about I-tunes is that in the case of Herbi's release they are also featuring "Harlem In Havana" & "I Had A King"...BUT they are "album only" meaning you have to download the whole album to get them. CD's were at the front counter, front and center here at the Starbucks in Saco, ME. There was also a pad of notepaper that had a Q&A: "What album by Joni Mitchell will be playing in Starbuks today? A) Clouds B) Blue C) Shine D) For The Roses" with a photo of Joni screened in the lower right corner. (I'm typing this from memory - the sheet that I snagged is still in the car...) I played Shine all day in my cafe today, and talked it up with anyone who was interested. I'm particularly partial to the post C&S period as well as to the Geffen years. NRH and TI are my favorites and represent, for me, the apex of her creative powers -- thus far -- as a musician and communicator. I was eagerly anticipating this date: the release of SHINE, and the thought of hearing new work by JM unleased in me a well of sentimentality; fond memories of buying a new JM release and rushing home to relentlessly listen to and digest each song. Each of those release-date-days was almost like a holiday. Well, for whatever reason, that's mostly all gone. I find SHINE, like TTT and TRAVELOGUE before it, to be disappointing. It's not that I find the text of the songs to be negative and sanctimonious, which so often seems to be the complaint of reviewers. In fact, I believe her take on the state of the world to be sadly spot-on (and the tragedy is that most people don't really seem to care). The problem is that her verbal eloquence has diminished...Perhaps I'm just another bitter, aging, unhappy misanthrope, but I miss the boat with SHINE. Musically and lyrically, it is, like TTT, half-baked; inconsistent in quality....love IGUANA, SHINE, IF but most everything else is a rephrased revisiting of past observations that were so much more articulately stated on, say, DOG EAT DOG. Still, I recognize the ultimate greatness of the artist and I'll keep listening in hope of a change of heart. -WElliott Sleep in cocoon like warmth with a new comforter. Click now!

I would actually think it a bit weird if all of the sudden, all the Starbucks employees everywhere were all of the sudden apeshit about Joni Mitchell. And though I do have a copy of Shine, I've only listened to it through once at the music school library through my headphones. Things are pretty busy here so I have to temper my enthusiasm. But, my son is stopping by the drive-thru at Starbucks for me right about now. I'm feeling the desperation now that I have time to think. The most beautiful times of my life are when I'm free from worries and hassles of the day and I come sit outside with the clouds and the stars to read, thinking of the pleasure I'm gonna have with Shine on this day of its release. And what a beautiful evening it is here in San Antonio, Texas because I'm gonna be able to listen to Joni all to myself, again and again, beneath this most unusually serene mantle of the moon. Oh, because of Joni, it feels like home for me once again. I so need this solitary refuge from all of life's fast lanes of living and with the moon shining right before eyes, I feel content, blessed and thankful. Truly, Jean I probably have about an hour's wait unless he decides to walk into Starbucks and then he'll stay there talking with the coffee girls wearing those black diamond earrings or turquoise ones or even those cubic zirconias from China.
