"hana", with its squawks and beeps is also a production that works very well for me, and i love the lyrics, a character description of an admirable woman. the only song where the guitar sounds vg8 flat-and-boring (like most of ttt) is 'shine', but there's piano, muted trumpet and that beautiful mournful vocal. and 'if' is just a wonderful song, i really agreed with the way one of the reviews we read yesterday liked it. i'm not completely crazy about 'bad dreams', though it is lovely, but i really have fallen for 'if i had a heart i'd cry', which for some reason reminds me of todd rundgren. i was a little trepidatious about this album, and from the first listen i've been 'thank god!' i really think you guys are going to love it. patrick np - sondheim, putting it together - -----Original Message----- From: owner-joni@smoe.org [mailto:owner-joni@smoe.org]On Behalf Of David Sapp Sent: Wednesday, September 19, 2007 2:38 PM To: joni list Subject: Night of the Iguana -- what it means to me I have been listening to Night of the Iguana repeatedly on one of the free streams. First of all I love the sound of it... yes synthesizers and all. But after a recent listen the meaning of the lyric revealed itself to me. Even though the song is written in the third person (he) it tells the tale of sexual desire from the lead character's point of view. He is a defrocked minister who had previously succumbed to his obsession and lost everything. And now he is being tempted by the "kid in the see-through blouse" and it seems as if everything is conspiring against him (the see-through blouse, the kid would appear to be the aggressor since she is moving in hard on this holy vows, the smell of the mercilessly sweet jasmine, the widow dancing on the beach with her lover boys, the steaming stars, the flagrant women, his screaming senses, and the spell of the night) and he fears he will once again lose everything. Here once again Joni reveals herself as a great songwriter. I believe most writers would be tempted to pass some kind of judgment on the defrocked minister or frame it in more politically correct terms or make the kid the victim and the minister a lecher. But Joni just presents the story as one of sexual desire and leaves it at that. I believe this is where it thematically connects with the rest of the album. Human desire can lead to destructive behavior whether it be individual loss or the destruction of the earth due to uncontrolled consumerism. And in the end, at least in this song, God is of no help even to a man who once devoted his life to the church. At least that's what it means to me... signing off for now, Peace, David - --------------------------------- Pinpoint customers who are looking for what you sell. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 20 Sep 2007 01:40:03 +0000 From: ajfashion@att.net Subject: Re: NJC The mind.... - -------------- Original message from Motitan@aol.com: -------------- > I have discovered, through my 22 years of life, that the mind is a powerful > tool. Your statement, " I believe the mind to be more powerful than even the body" may be true when one is dealing with a head cold (although I'm not convinced of that), but I promise you if you are ever have a life-threatening illness you are not apt to believe this so passionately. One's mind and attitude can have a profound effect on the quality of one's life when one is ill (and that's not a small thing), but I promise you, when a terrifying diagnosis comes, most people want cutting-edge medical care. The mind can't "cure" congestive heart failure or cancer or HIV (although medicine has come a long way with HIV)-- .if it could, a lot of people I know would still be alive. It's also never been proven scientifically that a good attitude, or faith, has had any effect in how people do with serious illness. Nevertheless I do believe that the mind is powerful, and that a great attitude can make one's quality of life much better while ill. But it can't change many, many things. - --Aleda ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 20 Sep 2007 01:43:47 +0000 From: ajfashion@att.net Subject: Re: Poem or Lyrics,   njc now High Schoo l daze - -------------- Original message from Bob.Muller@Fluor.com: -------------- > > school days, Aleda.> > > Isn't that sort of universal? Though it is not always easy to do, I believe that you can visualize your reality and bring things into fruition using your mind and spirit. I think it goes without saying that there are things that are beyond our control...illnesses that we can not stop or prevent.
