Artists as diverse as John Mellencamp, Blind Boys of Alabama, Martha Wainwright, The Black Crowes and Andrew Bird contribute tracks to Song of America, a unique 50-song, three-CD set envisioned by former U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno and artist/producer Ed Pettersen. The album that was released Tuesday, September 18. The collection recounts the history of America in song, from 1492 through to modern times. Song of America provides listeners an artistic way to connect with America's vast musical and cultural heritage with new and varied renditions of beloved classics. This amazing compilation includes musical interpretations performed by contemporary artists spanning the gamut of folk, blues, rock, R&B, country, classical, and hip-hop genres. Janet Reno explains, "I thought that music would be a great way to engage listeners, especially young listeners, and spark their interest so they could gain a greater understanding and appreciation for our history. I am very proud to be associated with this collection of inspired performances." THE ANSWER IS... ALL POEMS with two being used as lyrics. This answer is according to James Shuman, the past president of California Federation of Chaparral Poets, Inc., who wrote: "The four selections are clearly all poetry -- different styles, etc. but all have the "feel" of poetry. Number One and Number Three could also be seen as lyrics rather easily, because of their rhyme and meter. Number Two and Number Four are less likely to be considered lyrics (especially # 4) although to some extent they resemble some of the lyrics of Bob Dylan, the Beatles, and more currently, Adam Duritz from Counting Crows." The sources of the stanzas are as follows: Number ONE: POEM used as lyrics in "Beyond and Before" by YES Sparkling trees of Silver foam Cast shadows soft in winter's home Swaying branches breaking sound In lonely forests trembling ground Number TWO: POEM titled "Letter Written During A January Northeaster" by Anne Sexton Where are your letters? The mailman is an imposter He is actually my grandfather He floats far off into the storm With his nicotine mustache and his bag of nickles Number THREE: POEM used as lyrics in "Running Shadow" by Michael Martin Murphy Wise men spoke the vision Of the spirit horses way Like a saviour he has a mission From the ashes of the plains All the souls of mighty warriors Are carried in his veins All the hopes of ancient nations Are flowing through his mane Number FOUR: POEM titled "Letter Written During A January Northeaster" by Anne Sexton (a different Monday) It must be Friday by now I admit I have been lying Days don't freeze And to say that the snow has quietness in it Is to ignore the possibilities of the word Only the tree has quietness in it Quiet as the crucifix Thank you for playing goes to: Richard Victor Bob Muller AJ Debra Bene Love, Laura ************************************** See what's new at http://www.aol.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 18 Sep 2007 21:03:38 -0400 (EDT) From: Catherine McKay Subject: Re: DJRR 2: Big Yellow Taxi - --- Catherine McKay wrote: > Question for you (Ich habe eine frage). > > How the heck do you figure out what the url is for > the > particular asf file? After a bit of research, I've learned that this 1938 film was based on one of Lloyd C. Douglas' "better living through faith" short stories (?), and--just as you suggested--Fay Bainter's Oscar-nominated role was actually spelled "Hannah Parmalee". It should also be noted that the Deborah Kerr character in John Huston's 1964 film version of Tennessee Williams' "The Night Of The Iguana" is named (and spelled in cast credits I've found) "Hanna Jelkes". I'm not exactly sure how Williams originally spelled it in his play, however, since he didn't pen the screenplay. But, perhaps Joni's "Hana" is actually a composite of BOTH characters ("HANNAH Parmalee" and "HANNA Jelkes")--thereby creating (voila!) "HANA". Just a thought (...and a possible explanation for the different spelling). XXXOOO, Billy NP: "The Pale Green Girl" (2004) by Penelope Houston ======================================== ckarma@hotmail.com wrote: From Joni's track by track for "Shine": 4. "Hana" "I wish I could remember the name of this great old movie from the '30s that I based this song on. The story is about a woman who literally shows up at a house in the middle of a blizzard. It's set in the Depression and she's selling kitchen utensils door to door. She literally comes in from the cold, sees the dire living situation of this school-teacher husband and his wife and kid, and becomes like an angel to them. She offers to be their maid, make their money stretch and get them back on the right track. Hana is a wily, street-wise, Irish woman who has a generous heart but also a hidden motive for being in this town: to visit her illegitimate son who was adopted by a rich family. I identified with her, but she was way ahead of me. She's exemplary in the way she dealt with life." Well Joni, the movie was 1938's "White Banners" directed by Edmund Goulding. Original music was by Max Steiner (woo hoo). Not a bad cast including Claude Rains, Claudette Colbert, Fay Bainter (Hannah or "Hana") and young Jackie Cooper. It was notable for a VERY REALISTIC depiction of the COLD INDIANA WINTER (think Griffith's "Way Down East"), which made the ending that much more gut wrenching. The character is referred to in literature I've found as "Hannah", not "Hana." Perhaps "Hana" is a Gaelic spelling? Perhaps this quote is indicative of "Hana"'s wise philosophy -- (The Schoolteacher, Paul Ward): "You don't think I have a fighting chance?" (Hannah): "I don't think you have a chance fighting." I can basically play whatever I want so I'll do mostly jazz, standards, broadway, pop, rock....I'll probably fit a few Joni songs in. I LOVE Herbie's arrangements and all the musicians' performances, but, except for Tina Turner and Leonard Cohen, all the other vocalists seem totally out of sync with the instrumentals -- almost as if they were listening to some other versions of these songs when they cut their vocals. No sensitivity to what's going on around them musically, no inventiveness, no sense of timing or meaningful phrasing. Am I the only one experiencing this? It's just struck me that it's only the youngsters I have a problem with. Tina at least finds her way into the ballpark and, admirably, delivers some vulnerable and daringly different vocal treatments than I have ever heard from her. And Leonard and company turned in the finest track on the record -- an exquisite performance that genuinely pays tribute to Ms. Mitchell's work as a writer. Very beat and steeped in Leonard and Joni's co-history. Spellbinding and iconic. Sadly, Norah Jones' performance is the most painful -- and I adore everything else I've ever heard her do. It sounds like they had the whole thing done before she came in to track the song, and it turned out to be in a key that wasn't right for her voice and at a pace that didn't allow her any time to do anything but rush to the next phrase. The other women sound like mediocre karaoke. I wish I could get this record without the singers on it, except for maybe Tina -- and Leonard, of course. I continue to admire all the artists on this record, but I just can't understand how anyone could have sat in the sessions when the younger artists cut their vocals and said, "Oh, yeah, that's it." I'm disappointed that Herbie didn't work with them to get more expressive, meaningful performances from them -- or get other vocalists to re-cut the tracks. I find the "sing-along" nature of their performances really annoying! Did no one have the guts to say, "Hmmm, okay... we're not quite there yet..."? Manually copy everything and paste it into the WM Recorder's URL text box. > I was trying to use that program to capture some other >> stuff from youtube and so on You do not need a program to capture video from YouTube. The format they use is flv = (flash video). WM Recorder is for asf/wmv (Windows Media) files, so that will not work here. As for YouTube, there are freeware programs which let you download the files but I find it totally unneccessary because after you watched it the video already IS on your computer - you only have to find it! As for grabbing from YouTube, I use my favourite browser which is called Opera. It is faster than Firefox (which I also use) and in this case more convenient as it saves the temporary data with it's correct file format endings, i.e. it does save a flash video as ******.flv. Firefox strips all file format information from the cached files, so you have to guess by file size which one the flv is. Okay, you want to try? Let's get a portable version of Opera first. Why portable? Because it doesn't mess with your registry, you can move it to another folder on your disk (or to a USB stick or such) or delete it. It will not alter your operating system. Get it here: http://www.kejut.com/operaportable (If you don't like it, you can simply delete it. If you do like it, you can of course install the latest version from www.opera.com.) After you start the browser, it will temporarily store ("cache") the contents of web pages in C:\Documents and Settings\[your user name]\Local Settings\Temp\hebat\profile\cache4\ Don't worry, you only have to dig there once. :) Use Windows Explorer (start with [Windows symbol key + E]) and navigate to that folder. Then, right-click on the folder name and choose "send to... desktop" to create an icon for direct access on your desktop! You will love it. Now you can access all those temp files directly while browsing. When I want to "collect" files from YouTube, I usually have that folder open in the background, so I can grab them immediately. BTW, this method of course also lets you grab images that you don't seem to be able to download, and so on. Now, let's try it out. :) My current favourite live performance is by Les Rita Mitsouko, a French duo featuring Catherine Ringer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qLz-ViJPdEI For saving a video, you only have to make sure that it is fully downloaded (which usually goes faster than sitting there and watching it), which you can tell by the red progress bar on the embedded player on the web page. Once it is finished, open your cache folder and sort the files by file size: The flv file will be the biggest file, in this case 7.636 KB. It will be called something like ****.tmp (which YouTube does, not Opera). You can now cut or copy the file to a folder where you want to collect your videos, then rename it to something useful, like Les.Rita.Mitsouko_Ding.Dang.Dong.flv. If you use Dailymotion for something nice like, let's see, this: http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x28ejo_rita-mitsouko-rendezvous-avec-moime_music then the cached file will already be correctly named ****.flv. Make sure that you grab the files while the browser is running because the cache folder will be emptied when you close the program. For flv (and mpg and asf and ...) playback I use the (already mentioned) KMPlayer: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_KMPlayer For browsing through cached images, I use Irfanview (www.irfanview.com). Install it and set to open image files with it in "Options". Then open/view any image file from the cache folder and hit the key "T". It will then display all images as thumbnails. I usually here sort by file size as well, as the small files will be web graphics only whereas photographs in jpg will be the bigger files.
