Here's a woman who at the height of her powers could populate her albums with world class musicians, and who was a very tidy rhythm guitarist herself. On this song, she can't even be bothered to play rhythm guitar! Instead she's opted for a set of ugly synthesised guitar samples. Ughh. Unlistenable. Speaking as someone who has more albums by Joni Mitchell in his collection than any other single artist, I hope the lyrics are fantastic, I couldn't get that far. Martin. I was pushing radio buttons kinda fast, blew by NPR, then went, "Wait, did she just sing '...where I stand'"? So I went back and sure enough! I love how the dobro sounds in that song. Very moving. After the song ended, Keillor started chatting about summer ending and winter moving in, and I was hoping maybe we are going to hear "Urge for Going" or better yet, a whole segment devoted to Joni songs. No such luck! :( I've been listening to Clouds lately. I haven't for a long time though, thinking that kind of music doesn't apply to someone my age anymore. But I just recently had a bad breakup of a six year relationship (I'm a complete wreck!) and Clouds seems to be helping me through this hard hurtful time. Is Clouds the album for lonely (and perhaps pathetic) single girls? I keep saying to myself that because my ex never wanted to go to Jonifest with me, we were never cut out for each other anyway - right? ; ) Mia <> _________________________________________________________________ Share your special parenting moments! http://www.reallivemoms.com?ocid=TXT_TAGHM&loc=us ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 17 Sep 2007 12:38:11 -0500 From: Michael Paz Subject: Fwd: Preview Herbie's Latest Album "River: The Joni Letters" At LiveDaily.com and Win! Preview Herbie's Latest Album "River: The Joni Letters" At LiveDaily.com and Win! Head over to www.livedaily.com/herbiehancock and be one of the first to hear the full album, which the New York Times says "delivers an intimate reinvention issuing from someplace deep inside the music." Describing the great work of Herbie's core band on the record (Herbie, sax genius Wayne Shorter, drummer Vinnie Colaiuta, bassist Dave Holland and guitarist Lionel Loueke), the Times goes on to say: They also support a handful of vocalists, ranging from the wistful young singer-songwriters Corinne Bailey Rae and Norah Jones (on "River" and "Court and Spark" respectively) to the spectral poet- songwriter Leonard Cohen ("The Jungle Line"). Tina Turner takes a mesmerizing turn on "Edith and the Kingpin," while the Brazilian jazz singer Luciana Souza offers a respectful "Amelia." Then there is Ms. Mitchell herself. "If shebs not a jazz singer, I donbt know who is," Mr. Hancock said. "Her phrasing on 'Tea Leaf Prophecy' is unbelievable." The New Yorker weighs in as well, speaking of Wayne Shorter's contributions: Hancock plays with care and beauty, his understated lyricism infusing the instrumental features "Sweet Bird," "Both Sides Now," and Duke Ellington's "Solitude," one of two non-Mitchell songs. But it is Shorter who truly inhabits Mitchellbs unique musical universe; relying on suggestion and shading, his compact soprano and tenor saxophone lines deliver the impact of ten notes with just one. Shorter gets to stretch out on his own composition, "Nefertiti," the spiralling number that, in its dC)but on Miles Davis's 1967 album of the same name, gave notice that the saxophonist was on the cusp of becoming a major jazz figure. Here, it acts as an homage to the artistic daring of three soul siblings: Joni, Wayne, and Herbie. "River: The Joni Letters" will be released September 25th at all the usual locations, and is available for pre-orders now from Amazon. - -- To unsubscribe from this list visit this link To update your preferences visit this link o?< ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 17 Sep 2007 10:03:19 -0700 From: "Randy Remote" Subject: Re: I Don't Know Where I Stand on Prairie Home Companion now njc Prudence Johnson used to be in a band called Rio Nido- I wish I hadn't lost their 1st album-it was highly excellent and long out of print. The best one I saw, many years ago & I never saw the same one again, was 'the religious right is neither' Hi Kate! Loved your story about bringing your son to see Geraldine Ferraro at East Beach in SB, while I was on the other coast doing the same thing. Cool! Does your son remember anything about it? My bumperstickers are: 1. "War is not the answer" (you can get a free one here: http://www.fcnl.org/involved/ They do good work.) 2. "Endless war" The "less" is crossed out and over it in red letters is "this". (That one is from moveon.org, who disappointed and embarrassed us last week w/ that ad. It was being discussed on CNN this morning by two politicos, and one of them said that "moveon.org is the boogie man for the right wing". Guess what I started singing? LOL...) I think mine are gentle. I try to steer away from the more negative ones, although they do give me a hearty laugh sometimes on the free freeway. For example: - -- Drunken frat boy drives country into ditch (TIC: that son of a bitch) - -- "Yee haw" is not a foreign policy - -- My child is an honor student. My president is a moron. - -- Bush: Like a rock (only dumber) - -- Somewhere in Texas a village is missing its idiot Okay, enough of that. Do you want to come inside my vehicle? Hop in, I'll pop in Hejira! That's the song I christened the car with. The first car I've ever had w/ a CD player. Hanging from the rearview mirror is a beautiful silver star, that has the word "PEACE" etched on it. (The peace and the star, you know?) In the way back/hatchback is a collection of anti-war signs, some handmade. You never know when you're going to have to wage peace! A few are attached to my sons' old hockey sticks. The blade part goes up the middle and anchors the double-sided signs quite nicely, and I get great comfort holding the hand grips that they taped themselves and that are stained with their sweat. They are sweet inspiration and remind me why I do what I do when my spirits start to sink. And then on my dashboard is a plastic stick-on decal that someone gave me. It's supposed to go on an outside window but it kept falling off so I put it on the dashboard. It's a big yellow peace symbol, with climbing (for the) roses growing up on it from the bottom. It says: "Let it grow." All my Joni bumperstickers are in my home or office for safe keeping. At one time I even toyed with getting a Joni vanity license plate. I was thinking of: "JONI * 1", which could mean "Joni is #1", or I am a "Joni one". But I haven't gone that far over the borderline yet.
