I'll look for you on the news. Speaking of news shows, right now on Dateline (NBC) there is a story on the horrific home invasion that happened here in CT in late July. Two parolees saw a mother and daughter in the paved paradise of a Stop & Shop, followed them home, and went back later in the middle of the night. They beat the father w/ a baseball bat and threw him in the cellar, tied up the two daughters (18 and 11), raped the younger one, raped the mother. They later burned down the house. They think the mother and daughters were still alive when they started the fire. Only the father escaped. Horrible horrible. Our little state was, and still is, freaked out. The father was a doctor, a renowned diabetes specialist. The mother was a school nurse who had been diagnosed with MS a few years ago (hello, sweet David Sapp!). The oldest daughter Hayley had raised over $50,000 for MS research (called Hayley's Hope) and Michaela, the 11 year old, was going to take over that work when her sister went off to study medicine at Dartmouth, as her dad had done. Sorry for this depressing story. Lock your doors and be on the look-out for people who thing hell's the hippest way to go. Love, Patti P., going back to the TV NPOMTV: That "All You Need is Luvs" commercial! For the DC area JMDLers (and possibly nationwide now), On the news reports of the Bowie State student who was missing for a week, then discovered after having crawled out of a 35 ft ditch to be spotted and rescued, that was me (a friend and neighbor of the McCormick family). Many of the local news stations wanted video of reaction, but the family just wanted to be left alone to savor the return of their son after he had fallen off the face of the Earth for 7 days. No news, no reports, no nothing, he was just gone. So that they news teams would have something to take back to their stations, I spoke on camera with a bunch of them. My wife and son were in some of them, so if you see one of them, it was me. GMA, Today, CNN, and all of the local DC stations have been covering this story. Julian is recovering just fine (nothing was broken), and might be at home either today or tomorrow. It's so good to hear a story about a young man with a happy, happy, ending. There's enough drugs, death, drive-bys, babies being dumped in trash cans and other equally depressing stories in the news this week. It's so good to have one with a super, happy, ending. I will check it out when time and good fortune allow. And the lyrics end with: Bust a street light Out past midnight Uh oh! It's the midnight hour right now. Does that mean I should run out underneath the streetlights in my nightgown again, and scream: "Two more weeks til SHINE, neighbors! Two weeks from tomorrow! She's coming home, she's coming home!" Nah. I'd better conserve my energy tonight. It's only Monday, Monday. Pleasant dreamland! Love and Peace, Patti P. . **** Patti, The song you had in your head is called "In the Street", by Big Star. Cheap Trick re-recorded it for the "That 70's Show" soundtrack. If you have never heard anything else by Big Star, and you're a Beatles fan, you should pick up "#1 Record/Radio City". That's their first two albums on one disc. "In the Street" is on there, and many, many other great songs. The whole disc is outstanding, and you will hear the Beatles influence on them immediately. They have had a major influence on power pop and will for many years to come, especially in the indie rock world. And going along with your storyline, the song "Back of a Car" on that disc is one of the best songs they ever wrote. Check it out sometime. NJC I too gave up on large stadium concerts unless I get seats way up front. For me, it's out of the question to attend any concert at any of these mega stadiums. One may as well be deaf to have any listening pleasure. Concerts at these sports arenas and/or gargantuan corporate concert concrete jungles are terrible environments for any cultural and beautiful music concert events. Many wonderful musicians are unable to capture the audiences unless they're acts like the Rolling Stones or shows like the Ozz-Fest which attract the carnival/circus crowds. Inspiration rarely comes out of these heavy metal and these trash can rock band concerts. I could be wrong. I often wonder what meaning (if there happens to be any meaning in the music) these crowds get or is it physical and nothing really mental--hearing without listening type of music, like touching without feeling, lusting without loving? But back to CSNY, I was close enough to enjoy the band, all the while getting frustrated with people walking and talking all around me, many becoming pests when they are drinking to get drunk, especially those rodeo Bush cowboy types who "yahoo" and belch out them loud yelps as if they're riding a bucking bull, making others unable to listen to the music comfortably. But with CSNY, you have to expect a rowdy crowd and give up the thought of any sort of musical intimacy due to the atmosphere of a large setting. Dylan was different. The crowd were all enjoying ears, in harmony and alot more subdued, yet energetic enough to get the audience rocking and rolling. Yet, with Dylan in an intimate setting, I must say, would blow me away, no matter if his voice is in tune or not. One of my musical dreams would be to see Dylan at a small venue. Dylan's going to be at this year's Austin City Limits week-end outdoors concert, but the heat and large crowds are intimidating me. "What do I do? What should I be?" Jeannie Bob.Muller@Fluor.com wrote: think about your music. You wouldn't even go see Crosby and Nash?> I like oldies just fine, but they should be golden and not molden. P-U on "Theme From Love Story" & "Feelings". I would definitely go see C&N in the right setting...a small acoustically-correct hall or facsimile thereof. Have no interest in seeing them in a hockey arena or stadium. And it's not just C&N - Bruce Springsteen tickets are dropping this week, and I'm not interested in seeing any of them, even though his new album is great and he's an incredible performer and the E-Street Band may never tour again. The hassles and costs of those stadium shows just outweigh the pleasures as far as I'm concerned. Reading Victor's review of the Allman Brother/DMB show, all I could think was 'thank god I wasn't there." NEW NEIL YOUNG ALBUM: CHROME DREAMS II SET FOR RELEASE OCTOBER 16th August 22, 2007 (Burbank, CA) b The new album by Neil Young, Chrome Dreams II, will be released by Reprise Records on October 16th. Speaking from a vacation retreat with his family, Young says it's "an album with a form based on some of my original recordings, with a large variety of songs, rather than one specific type of song." It comes at a creative peak for the artist, following the Greendale, Prairie Wind, and Living With War albums, and a summer 2006 tour by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young that concert audiences are still talking about. In many ways, Chrome Dreams II is the ultimate example of what Young does best: most of the songs were written recently and came quickly, and the "live" recording sessions in northern California were over before they were announced. The album includes all kinds of music, and taken together, offers a complete picture of where Neil Young is today. "Where Living With War and Everybody's Rockin' were albums focused on one subject or style," Young says, "Chrome Dreams II is more like After The Goldrush or Freedom, with different types of songs working together to form a feeling. Now that radio formats are not as influential as they once were, it's easier to release an album that crosses all formats with a message that runs through the whole thing, regardless of the type of song or sound." On the sessions for the album, Neil Young was joined by Crazy Horse drummer Ralph Molina, pedal steel guitarist and dobro player Ben Keith (Harvest, Comes A Time, Harvest Moon) and bassist Rick Rosas (Freedom, Living With War, This Note's For You). Most of the recording was done at Feelgood's Garage studio near Redwood City, California, with two vintage gas pumps out front and vintage studio gear inside. On the music itself, Young says, "Some early listeners have said that this album is positive and spiritual. I like to think it focuses on the human condition. Like many of my recordings, this one draws on earlier material here and there. I used to do that a lot back in the day. Some songs, like 'Ordinary People,' need to wait for the right time. I think now is the right time for that song and it lives well with the new songs I have written in the past few months. I had a blast making this music." The new album's title refers to an earlier planned release that never came out. In fall of 1976, the album Chrome Dreams was announced for a November release. However, that date came and went and no album ever appeared. ********************* NEIL YOUNG CHROME DREAMS CONTINENTAL TOUR BEGINS OCTOBER 18 New Album Chrome Dreams II Out October 16 September 10, 2007 (Burbank, CA) b Neil Young will begin a North American tour on October 18th in Boise, Idaho, two days after the release of his new extraordinary album Chrome Dreams II on Reprise Records.
