Hana [image: Printer-friendly version of this lyric] by Joni Mitchell Hana steps out of a storm Into a stranger's warm, but Hard-up kitchen. She sees what must be done So she takes off her coat Rolls up her sleeves And starts pitchin' in. *Hana has a special knack For getting people back on the right track 'Cause she knows They all matter So she doesn't argue or flatter *She doesn't fight the slights She takes it on the chin Like a champ *Hana says when life's a drag Don't cave in Don't put up a white flag Raise up A white banner In this manner- Straighten your back Dig in your heals And get a good grip on your grief!* Hana says, "Don't get me wrong This is no simple Sunday song Where God or Jesus comes along And they save ya." You've got to be braver than that You tackle the beast alone With all its tenacious teeth! Light the lamp. Hmmm. Can't wait to hear this. I should have leiked to meet this Hana, she seems like a very wise person. Sometimes I attend services at a very special church in Oslo. It's called Kirkens bymisjon, Toyenkikren. What is special is that it gathers all kinds of persons from famous Liv Ullman to the drugaddict on the street. And I think we all feel welcome there. What I like most about this church is that it is a place just to sit down and relax. None will bring a mission to you, I'm welcome - as I am. Coming there is like coming to Hana. And coming there and meeting othere, both those who have been fortunate and those who has'nt always makes me grateful, becaus it is no us - and them, it is we... And that is maybe my on line qutation review of all Joni Mitchells arts & music: It is we...(And we got to get ourselves back to the garden.....) And as Tom Waits sings, I'm a raindog too. Hey, Oddmund. These lyrics really stood out for me too. It's very grounded, homespun without the cuteness. I particularly liked this, and the way the rhyming of "banner" and "manner" are there in the middle of this verse makes me chuckle for some reason. Matter of fact, I think this album is lyrically very strong from start to finish. Of course it's not the philosophical metaphor of Hejira or the cryptic depth of HOSL, but so what? To anyone who would challenge the quality of Joni's writing on this album, I would direct them to study the lyrics on the "Blue" album. For the most part they are simple and straightforward, sometimes whimsical, sometimes dark. And that's what Joni's giving us on "Shine". So let's 'accuse' her of trying to repeat "Blue"...is that a crime? Instead of focusing on relationships between people, she's examining relationships between cultures, countries, religions. It seems to be a logical pattern of growth that one would have from their 30's to their 60's. What I fear is that reviewers will focus on the political songs and ignore the others and talk about how Joni has shifted from merely being angry with the music business to being angry at the world, and I don't think that's the case at all. And I think you're right. It's easy to try to distance onself from what an artist is trying to say, just by saying "Oh, that's the old Joni, now shes's angry on the world. Wonder what's next" I find Joni a very brave person, and it's always very inspiring that she follows up what's on her herat and her lips. If I only could do that. Or if only any of those cold critics (that surely will show up) could do that, than I'm sure the world would turn out to be a warmer place to be... But unforunately we cant't, and that "can't" sometimes ends up in unfair judgement, as you sketched here. We'll just wait and see. I guess we're more excited than Joni. She has been abondoned from the critics you refer to, almost since she relased "Blue" so I'm sure she will be shocked to get anything, but a cold shoulder from those... Anyways I'm so happy that she doesn't make fear of others judgement stop her doing what she love, and what she feels she has to do. We are many, both critics, and musicians, and just musiclovers, who love what Joni has done all the years, not least what she did after "Blue" I listened to "Dog eat dog" yesterday, and I'm still amazed of the energy she puts into it. It so vivid, so alive and it has such a strong political content, not at all gone out of fashion or relevance...We love Joni, and I hope the fact that "Shine" is being released, will get more people to discover the wonderful and multitalented and brilliant artist Joni Mitchell is. We also write about many other musicians and subjects and we all seem to be cool with agreeing to disagree. Remember, a few Digests ago when we were talking about who Harry might be? Someone on the Digest (sorry, I forget who and apologize) wrote about Joni's disdain for a particular type of woman. I agree. In "Last Chance Lost", Joni wrote "The shrew will not be tamed"....I think this also pertains to Joni's feelings about some women. I also share what I think Joni might be referring to about this specific type of woman. Self-centered, demanding, "credit card eyes", narcissistic, living in their own private world without interest in our planet and what is happening in our world at any given time....I can think of many other personality traits to list but I think you have my drift. There's plenty to be angry about. I don't even know if I have the grace Joni calls for in "This Place": Spirit of the water Give us all the courage and the grace To make genius of this tragedy unfolding The genius to save this place. That's hopeful. So might be the enigmatic "Bad dreams are good in the great plan." I think "Strong and Wrong" might be too polemical and not poetical enough. But "Shine" works well, indeed--I love those lyrics best of all. Nothing can redeem Kipling's wretched poem "If" for me. I'm not entirely anti-Kipling: Kim is a masterpiece as are The Jungle Books, Just So Stories and a number of short stories for adults. But "If" is spoken entirely by Kipling's inner Polonius. The three were taken to the Central District Substation of the United States Park Police. They will later be transferred to a jail in which they will spend the night before being arraigned in U.S. Superior Court tomorrow afternoon. Attorneys at the Partnership for Civil Justice have filed a Free Speech lawsuit to strike down the unconstitutional postering law. The ANSWER Coalition has refused to pay these illegal fines. Momentum continues to build for the September 15 Mass March, which will be led by Iraq War Veterans and their family members. More than 100 cities are mobilizing to bring people by bus, van and car caravan. The September 15 March will culminate with a large scale Die-In/Funeral for U.S. servicemembers and Iraqis who have been killed in this criminal war of aggression." You can check out the CD here: ? http://cdbaby.com/cd/bigyellowtaxi4 ? (The unreleased songs are the 1st three). This CD is well worth owning. - ----------------------------------------------------- ? Thanks for the link!? I really do appreciate it and will check it out here at work.? I do enjoy Joni's early, early work.? It's incredible that she got into those different tunings so early on in her guitar playing.? I mean, she had only been playing a few years and already was composing songs, exploring new tunings, etc etc.? You really get a feel for her influences at that time.? I do think her writing got stronger in general--both musically and lyrically (that is inevitable with time!).? It's all so incredible to see the base of where it all started though and to hear these songs that other writers would have killed to write later on in their career let alone at the start of their career.? - -Monika, working the graveyard yard shift (12AM-6AM) at the station... Bob - ------------------------------ ??? You bring up a good point here.? That is the risk with putting out material with even a touch of political awareness let alone an album of it.? Often just because it is political, the musicality of it all will come second if even at all.? The political core will be in the spotlight and not usually in the way the artist (in this case Joni) would want it.? Some people (critics and others alike) could be turned off right off by hearing this political voice because it may not be what he/she believes.? Politics and music are funny that way.? We listen to?songs all the time that we may not necessarily "believe" in or experience ourselves but we're ok with it.??If the tune is good, the tune is good.? I mean I listen to male artists all the time going on about some girl they love or want to be with and surely I can't relate to that because I'm not a man.? People listen to things like that all the time and don't mind.? But as soon as something political comes around that you don't believe, let's bring out the?hammers and the nails and forget about the entire song.? No artist forces you to?change your opinion.? Surely Joni doesn't force you to believe?what she believes.? She simply pours her own heart out and if you can dig it, excellent.? If you can't, so be it.? Take it or leave it.? I admire Joni for always doing that in her work.?? - -Monika? ________________________________________________________________________ Email and AIM finally together. Remember what Joni said... "I sing my sorrow, and I paint my joy." Seems pretty evident in some of the Shine lyrics, IMO.
