So I bought that too, and then what the hell, got a new stylus as well. So here I am, all decked out to see how this rig works with vinyl. I played a nearly pristine, yard sale copy of DJRD. Sounded great, altho it was one of those cheap vinyl-crunch pressings Warners was issuing at that time. Like all these double albums, the order of the sides was 1/4 on the first disc, and 2/3 on the second. This seemed odd once again, until I remembered auto changers on the turntables of the time (think Dual and Garrard and BSR McDonald) These allowed you to stack several records on a spindle, and they would automatically drop and cue at the end of each side. So this explains the 1/4 -2/3 progression. You could stack DJRD, play side 1 and 2 automatically, then flip the stack and play 3 and 4. Win a bar bet.... Yes, Pat, I'm sure you're right, being there was a totally different experience than listening to it now. A concert is so much more than hearing and seeing the performing artists. That spirit - Patti described the experience so well - can probably not be captured on tape. I went to the Beatles' concert in Hamburg in 1966, and of course you couldn't hear a thing and half of the time the Beatles just had private conversations and jokes on stage, they didn't even care to try and perform anymore. As you probably know by then they were fed up with all the screaming that went on, making it pointless for them to perform their music. But what an experience it was anyway! Also, I have never really explored CMIARS other than "My Secret Place" and a couple of other songs, but this weekend, I finally gave the whole album a good listen. And while I thought there might be a dud or two on there, the album overall was great, but the last song "A Bird That Whistles" really made me smile. What a great song and a great way to end the album. As I collect LPs, I could only compare the feeling to going to a record show, having found a couple of things I liked during the day, but getting ready to leave and stopping at one last table, and finding a real gem. I live with my partner Travis (thus, Mark.Travis@gte.net), our dog Vanessa and three cats, Oscar, Silviah and Mickie. I have been a Joni Mitchell devotee since my college years in the early 70s when I discovered 'Court and Spark' and was awestruck by its depth, beauty and Joni's uncanny ability to seemingly express thoughts and emotions that I thought were mine alone. This is Joni content so I removed the njc tag. I remember the rules! And the main rule is Joni rules! I joined the JMDL almost at its inception. I took a sabbatical and am testing the waters here again. Seeing who's still around, seeing who's new. Julie Taymor has directed 2 films that I think are 2 of the most visually stunning and fascinating movies I have ever seen, 'Frida' and 'Titus'. 'Frida' is an eye-filling, emotionally powerful movie about Frida Kahlo and 'Titus' is one of the best adaptations of a Shakespeare play on film, imo. Innovative, eye-filling and over-the-top. An early play from Willie the Shake that is grotesquely violent in places but that Taymor manages to translate into a stunning and fascinating film. Jessica Lange and Anthony Hopkins are both great. Hopkins even gets to poke a little fun at his Hannibal the Cannibal role from 'Silence of the Lambs'. Somehow, it fits. As you can see, I still have not learned to be brief. I'll stop for now. Titus is not for the faint of heart. Some of it is really horrific. I actually read 'Titus Andronicus' after seeing the film. The film is almost word for word the same dialogue and plot from the play. Taymor does give it a visual prologue and epilogue that implies an anti-violence message. 'Frida' is an eye-filling, emotionally powerful movie about Frida Kahlo and 'Titus' is one of the best adaptations of a Shakespeare play on film, imo. Innovative, eye-filling and over-the- top. Another page in the Joni Covers book is written. I would of course love to hear any feedback you have, either offlist or on. And don't change that dial - PLENTY of Joni covers in store - - matter of fact, I may have to step up my release process a bit to play catch-up with all the Joni covers pouring again. This collection is top-notch. The first song was a tip-off ... perfect ... and all the Rivers that flowed later were also good covers, as were all the covers of A Case of You. (You're so Square) Baby I Don't Care is great and Duncan Shiek does a good job with Court and Spark. I kind of like the piano in Kesseler's Both Sides. Thanks for this and all the collections you've done. ************************************** Get a sneak peek of the all-new AOL at http://discover.aol.com/memed/aolcom30tour ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 3 Sep 2007 18:51:09 -0700 (PDT) From: Bob Muller Subject: Re: Latest covers download NJC Hell, thanks for that - Beccy Cole is from down under as well, and I LOVE what she does with "You're So Square". I love to be able to send these out all over the world. Bob NP: Stone Temple Pilots, "Wicked Garden" - --------------------------------- Building a website is a piece of cake. Yahoo! I'm at my friend Michael's house and have enjoyed a marvelous day watching all the Poodles romp and play in Michael's huge back yard. I'm using a lap-top for the first time and it feels strange. Just wanted all of you to know that I hope you enjoyed your holiday (USA people) AND that I hope you were all SAFE and had FUN!!!!!!! I always thought of Joni as then exercise of opposites personified. She clearly is filled to the brim...if not spilling over...with courage. I wondered for a lot of today how she was spending this day. Michael needs his lap-top so I'll sign off with tons of love to all! Just wanted to warn people that a couple of images may stay with you a long time, and they're not the kind of things one necessarily wants in one's head. I agree about Frida--I was skeptical, having loved Frida Kahlo for a long long time (as in: a lot longer than Madonna's enthusiasm and the wave of Frida-worship that took over a couple of decades ago). I could watch that movie over and over. Great great film. Great music too--I have the soundtrack. I'm relatively new to the list, but am glad you are back! - --AJ ------------------------------ End of JMDL Digest V2007 #345 ***************************** ------- Post messages to the list by clicking here: mailto:joni@smoe.org Unsubscribe by clicking here: mailto:joni-digest-request@smoe.org?body=unsubscribe -------
