Although the world and the humans inhabiting it aren't perfect, which we all know, to me that is no reason not to uphold some standards of right and wrong. To me, right and wrong have to be measured by the effect our actions have on other people. If what I do hurts somebody else I have to ask myself if this action is necessary. If I hurt others without thinking twice, I would say that is wrong. Cheating on your partner can never be right, to my mind, but of course, there are complications, like when you fall in love with somebody else. Whether cheating can be forgiven is a different matter entirely and depends on the situation and the people involved. I wish you all a sunny, happy weekend. It's a special time when we get to forget about work for a day and soak ourselves in Joni covers - and since I've ONLY put Ninety-one volumes out there, I figured I'd better give you a new one to revel in, so here it is. And it's another crowning jewel in the Joni Covers crown, if I do say so myself. Thanks to Paul and Mark-Leon for their help. Here's where it is hiding: http://download.yousendit.com/CD26F85C435A251F And here's what's on it: 1. Madeleine Peyroux & k.d. lang - River: It should be against the rules to have TWO superb vocalists on a single track, but since it's not, here they are. This was a pretty high-profile track in the Joni covers world, and Madeleine has a big following, so perhaps you've already heard it. If not, now you have. It's very pretty. 2. Bernice Lewis - A Case Of You: Hailing from Williamston, Mass, Bernice has been a fixture on the folk circuit for awhile. She has a very unique vocal style and her voice is very clear and precise. And the fact that she is accompanied only by acoustic stand-up bass on the track keeps her voice up front even more. This track comes from her 2006 CD. 3. Gracie Rivera - Both Sides Now: Had it been Chita or Geraldo, it might have been more memorable. 4. Bukeka Shoals with Ken Lovern's OJT - Big Yellow Taxi: OJT in this case standing for "Organ Jazz Trio"...and as you know I love that sound. Besides the organ we're also treated to some fine guitar licks and of course Ms. Shoal's knockout vocals. I can see this one getting folks up on their feet during a live gig. 5. Beccy Cole - (You're So Square) Baby, I Don't Care: An incredibly cool country blues take on this one - leave the Elvis impressions to others, Beccy takes this song and truly makes it her own with a Chet Atkins feeling. Sweet! 6. Sarah McLachlan - River: And speaking of famous and lovely River covers, here's another one that got lots of attention, and also very deserving of the praise. I like the fact that Sarah's pacing is a little lively as opposed to the dirginess that sometimes is applied. 7. Peter Mathers - Both Sides Now: The snap crackle & pop of the vinyl gives the time frame of this one away, but it's certainly not cheesy in any way - Peter is an accomplished classical guitarist, and he makes one guitar sound like an army with this original rapid-fire arrangement. 8. J. Michael Reeds - People's Parties: Reeds' voice is a bit awkward at first, like a cheesy lounge singer, but the backing band helps and repeated listens make it more enjoyable, and he does express the right feelings with the lyrics, at least to my ears. Plus, he gets bonus points for doing a deep track instead of one of the old reliables. 9. Wynonna - Help Me (Live): The studio take of this was released way back when, this is a live take from Ms. Judd's 2005 live CD. Her undying love for Joni shines through, from the intro when she refers to Joni as her "She-ro" to the passionate comments she makes during the performance. 10. Liane Carroll - River: It's kind of ironic...you've probably heard of Madeleine & Sarah, but I'll bet fewer know Liane (except of course for Joseph who knows even singers that haven't been born yet) and this cover of River is my FAVORITE on this disc, and perhaps my favorite cover of River period. Liane imbues the song with soul without going overboard on Diva-ness. Wonderful phrasing and emoting....OK, you get the point. 11. Duo Vance - Both Sides Now: A very pretty flute and classical guitar duet from Beverly & Howard Vance. They hail from Memphis, which goes to show that you can't predict what sort of sounds will come out of Memphis. 12; Matthew Andrae - A Case Of You: I won't bore you with the difficulties I had in getting this one, I'll just say that I'm glad I did. Matthew sounds like what Tracy Chapman would sound like if she was a dude. He's a Native American, and uses his music to promote peace. 13. Brian Kennedy - Big Yellow Taxi: Brian's lovely Irish tenor has been featured in this collection before - way back when we began, with his awesome cover of ACOY. This is a new live recording, available only as a newspaper promotional giveaway. Lots of JMDLer's saw Brian when he performed with Van Morrison on Joni's '98 tour. 14. Jacki Cooper Jazz Quartet - Twisted: The classic vocal jazz quartet sound, very tight playing and singing and solid supporting backup from start to finish, and featuring a fine sax solo. Has a nice live feel to it. 15. Martin Kesseler - From Both Sides Now: Not a whole lot to say about this one, it's a piano-bass-drums treatment where no one steps up and does anything creative, I suppose it's to serve as background music for those times when you don't want music interrupting good conversation. 16. Mia Dyson & James Reyne - Woodstock: This one comes from the CD released from selections from an Australian TV show called "Rockwiz Duets". I'll leave it one of my mates to expand on that if they wish. But the track is solid - both voices are powerful and easily handle the CSNY arrangement. 17. Vance Gilbert - A Case Of You: Vance is also fairly well known, and his lilting blue-eyed soul voice suits the song well, I think. Nice and loose, yet supported by some great musical colors. 18. Duncan Sheik - Court & Spark: You may know the story behind this one...originally recorded for the "A Case of Joni" Reprise tribute that never happened, Duncan released this one himself last year in a collection of his own. Now if the others that left behind would just follow his lead. This is definitely worth hearing, it's true to the original while allowing Duncan the chance to put his stamp on it. 19. Hilda Doyle - Both Sides Now: Don't know much about her, but this 1981 voice & guitar recording is really pretty 20. Laura Canoura - Todo Lo Que Quiero: A nice upbeat Spanish Language-version of "All I Want" - Laura has previously graced us with a translated take on "Last Time I Saw Richard". And there you go; twenty tracks, twenty hits. Another page in the Joni Covers book is written. I would of course love to hear any feedback you have, either offlist or on. And don't change that dial - PLENTY of Joni covers in store - matter of fact, I may have to step up my release process a bit to play catch-up with all the Joni covers pouring again. Enjoy the fruits of my labors, y'all. We seem to be assuming that Harry actually lives in L.A (because Joni does?) but we have nothing to support that. Em is turned off by Harry and his world because it is boring (as indeed it is) but Joni found something fascinating enough in it to write about it, and it is certainly a ubiquitous existence in 1975 and today, in every capitalist country. I suspect, as AJ has noted, that Joni saw the glimpses of an inner life, of dreams unfulfilled, of former sexuality and mused on how time and the corporate machine dull each one until we ARE paper, in the mind, in the hand and on the walls in the suburban home (what a great metaphor!). And speaking of home, it is interesting that Joni calls the song Harry's HOUSE; although we get a snapshot of the house itself with its climbing ivy in the bathroom, isn't she really pondering the significance of how empty this corporate world leaves THE HOME? Thanks to all who have chimed in on this thread. My initial motivation for starting it, in all truth, is that Robin wanted me to introduce this song at our show the other day and I was at a loss for a factoid (was Harry drawn from an actual person?) I said something blah about it being an ironic portrait of suburban middle class bliss, but our thread has shed new light. You guys are wonderful. That was roughly seventy-five years ago. Here Barry Goldensohn of New York offers a look at a contemporary subway station. Not petals, but people all the same. Subway The station platform, clean and broad, his stage for push-ups, sit-ups, hamstring stretch, as he laid aside his back pack, from which his necessaries bulged, as he bulged through jeans torn at butt, knee and thigh, in deep palaver with himself--sigh, chatter, groan. Deranged but common. We sat at a careful distance to spy on his performance, beside a woman in her thirties, dressed as in her teens-- this is L.A.--singing to herself. How composed, complete and sane she seemed. A book by the Dalai Lama in her hands, her face where pain and wrong were etched, here becalmed, with faint chirps leaking from the headphones of her walkman. Not talking. Singing, lost in song. http://www.americanlifeinpoetry.org/columns/125.html *** Of course that brought up these lyrics from JLTT, and I started singing, getting lost in Joni song yet again: ".....And I found this empty seat In this crowded waiting room Everybody waiting Old man sleeping on his bags Women with that teased up kind of hair Kids with the jitters in their legs And those wide, wide open stares And the kids got cokes and chocolate bars There's a thin man smoking a fat cigar..." Thanks, Bob, for yet more covers, or covours as we might say here. I'm back from the west coast. I ended up not going to the place that used to be Lord Jim's (where Joni hung out while her BC house was being built) after all, since I could only get one day and, since it's a spa and a place to relax and the only day I could get at all was the day before we were coming back to Toronto (or the T-dot as some people call it), and it involved a couple of ferry boat rides & we couldn't check in before 4 and would have to check out before 11 a.m. the next day, didn't think it was worth the hassle. I am in love with BC now though, not so much Vancouver, because it's a big and very busy city with expensive housing and downtown is Party Central, which is not my cuppa tea, but outside Vancouver, including Vancouver Island. I always love the non-English covers of any of Joni's songs, but "Todo Lo Que Queiro" by Laura Canoura knocks my socks (and briefs) off Thanks for the Fruits of you Labor and Love, Bob!......and thanks to Paul and Mark-Leon for chipping in. hugs from HOT Florida, Jimmy ************************************** Get a sneak peek of the all-new AOL at http://discover.aol.com/memed/aolcom30tour ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 1 Sep 2007 16:22:05 -0700 (PDT) From: Bob Muller Subject: Re: Joni Covers, Volume 92 - The Fruits of my Labor Hey, it's Saturday night, Jimmy - a good time to get your briefs knocked off. have fun. Thank you, Pat! Danke schon, Wolfgang! I was there! We can't return, we only look behind from where we came.....so I'm looking back, looking back, way back to 1974. This was the third time I saw Joni. The first was: Woolsey Hall, February 2, 1974, just a few days before my 20th birthday. I went w/my boyfriend and that show was magical. You never forget your first time, as they say. Our seats were on the right, about a third of the way back. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woolsey_Hall LOL...I remember that a security guard nabbed our bottle of Cold Duck from my mirrored hippie cloth pocketbook, which in retrospect was a good thing because I got to really hear and absorb the whole experience without getting drunk on alcohol. C & S was so new then, and when the encore was "Twisted", we hardly knew it and thought it was kind of a weird encore, because she didn't even play an instrument. DUMMIES! Wouldn't you just kill to see her do that now? I would be on the floor. I'd need treatment! The second time was on August 4, 1974, at Place des Nations in Montreal, Oh Canada (thanks for finding that, Simon!). That one, too, was super magical, but I won't go into that now, because that's another few screens.....and this one is going to be long enough. I tell you about Woolsey Hall because that was the first time, in a beautiful and intimate setting (it seats 3,000). So now we're off to Roosevelt Raceway. I knew it would be different and bigger, but it was nothing like the first or second experience. I remember the excitement, driving down to Long Island (Hi Kenny B.!) from CT in our 1970 dark blue Volvo 144S with the "Impeach the President. Now More Than Ever." bumpersticker still proudly still displayed. (Oh, that Tricky Dick.) I remember driving over the big bridge, onto the Long Island Expressway (?), passing Jones Beach, where my Dad took our whole family (along with other families) on an annual outing. I was thinking I was all grown up now, no parents around telling me what to do, off to see Joni. (We love our parents, but not like we love our freeeEEEEEeeeeDOM!) The years spin by and now the girl is twenty, and her dream of grandeur to see Joni again is about to come true. Even though it was September and I really should be back at school, I was not taking classes yet because I was going to study in France on October 1st for a whole year. Ooh la la -- I was going to be a free man in Paris; I felt unfettered and alive! I was as free as a bird. The world was my oyster, and Joni was the pearl. (Pardon the cliche, but it works for me.) I'm sure I was wearing blue Dr. Scholl sandals, bell-bottomed blues, and an embroidered peasant shirt (with those little mirrors in it -- remember them?), hair down to my waist, probably in a braid that day. I think it was hot out. I was on a mission, not to just to see and hear Joni, but to shake her hand. Yessiree Bobs, I was going to get right up there under that stage and shake her hand. I was not to be denied. It was my quest to follow that star, no matter how hopeless, no matter how far. ("I'm a little bit corny...") Ha! Now I laugh at how my quest for Joni perfection was denied. The fairy tale was not to come real that day. In terms of intimacy and sound and comfort and viewing, this concert was kind of a portrait of a disappointment. 80,000 people! Holy merde! Have I ever seen that many people together before? I really don't know. We (my boyfriend and two friends/roommates) headed toward the front and quickly realized it was an impossible dream. It was sooo crowded, and muddy (I think) up front. There was no way we could squeeze in. So we headed back along the sidelines, looking for space. Back, back, back. We finally ended up in the side bleachers, behind plexiglass I think, and had to watch the whole show on a little black and white TV over our heads. The sound, as you can imagine, was awful. I took a few pictures of the crowd (could barely see the stage) w/ my Canon FTB w/ the brand new telephoto lens. The clearest picture I have of that day is a slide, of Joni playing the piano on that little black and white TV. Did I regret going? Of course not. No regrets, Coyotes! It was still fun, fun, fun (the Beach Boys were there, too) and it wasn't the best out of six, but that's okay. The NEXT time I saw Joni, November 13, 1975, at the New Haven Coliseum, I DID get to shake her hand. I guess it's easier to push through 8,000+ (?) people than 80,000. I've already shared that one. Electricity! She smiled right into my eyes, and I mirrored them back. Anyway, it is great to hear this concert now, because I didn't hear much of it that day. I absolutely love Another Sleep Song, and Graham of course, and when Joni comes in at 2:23 or thereabouts, I got chills and goosebumps and started to cry! (Flowers of deep feeling, I guess.). THAT VOICE! Holy merde. Sweet Jesus and Hail Mary and St. Joseph -- out of the fire like Catholic saints! That girl could/can sing! And the introduction to Our House gave me chills, too, when Graham said "This one is for Callie" (who is that?) and then, I think, Stephen says "And "Christopher" (his son avec Veronique Sanson, whose album I was soon to be given by my new French "mother") (BTW, that song she wrote -- "Christopher" -- was somewhat "instrumental" when I named my first-born son) and then right after singing "in the vase you bought today" Graham chimes back in and says "and for Joni, too." Fiery gems indeed. (Given the latest thread, I wonder anew at how Joni could leave "Our House". He never would have made into a "Harry's House", but oh well....I judge not. I just come out to wonder.) Phew! That was a stream of concert consciousness/all the spirit that was inside of me, from way back when. I well up with affection Thinking back down the roads to then Merci beaucoup, Pat! Et vive la Joan! Patti P. P.S. Do you think the Joni portion of this concert is out there, somewhere? Thank you, Patti, for that wonderful account! It really cheared me up on this rather dismal Sunday morning in Sweden (no Chelsea morning here today whereas yesterday the sun poured in like butterscotch). And you got to shake Joni's hand! What an experience that must have been! I'm not sure I would have been that brave had I had the chance. (I was really shy well into my thirties, and in 1975, I was 25). I also loved your account of clothing back then. I do remember the peasant shirts, had a variety of them myself. Did you wear those necklaces with the peace symbol as well? Or the ones with a bell that jingled when you walked? (They came into fashion around the time when the Beatles released Sergeant Pepper). Enough nostalgia! Shine on, Patti!
